My netbook refuses to start in Windows 7, though it will boot into Ubuntu from a USB thumb drive. How can I repair Windows' startup from outside of Windows and/or booting from a thumb drive?

Advice and encouragement, please, on jumping the rest of the way into Linux. Several specific issues inside, but the gist is that I got fed up with Windows and started dual-booting Ubuntu 10.10 on several machines. Now I think I'm ready to make Ubuntu my permanent all-the-time OS. What are considerations and best practices I should consider? What am I not thinking of?

I'm considering jumping ship from the iPhone. Android is the natural choice, but I'd love to hear from someone who went from iPhone to (gulp) non-smartphone! I'd consider getting a 3G laptop card or a netbook and just a regular phone if there were cost savings in it, but I wonder if I'm too used to the iPhone. Can it be done??? (contains some swearing and anti-Apple rhetoric).

I recently played with an iPad, and I definitely see the appeal. I tend to hate touchscreens in favor of clickable keyboards, but I do see the use of touchscreens in web browsing, e-book reading, etc. I like the form factor and portability of the iPad, and I especially like the no-contract a la carte wireless options. Now that I've started to think about what I might use such a device for, what are my options?

I am a teacher at a high school that will be providing netbooks to every single student this fall. I am trying to consider ways that this will be helpful in the classroom, particularly in a math classroom. If you knew that every child in the classroom had their own netbook and the classroom were wireless, what would you like to see happen that would help students learn math? Please fire away ideas. All are welcome - whether brainstorm ideas or maybe you know of a particular website or web-based tool that would help students. Particularly, I'd like to assess students' progress as they learn as well as to provide them multiple ways to learn/experience the fundamental concepts in a math course. I have a HP Mini 110 with a 160 GB HD running Ubuntu. I'm pretty happy with it, but I don't really need all that space (currently I'm filling a tiny portion of it) and would prefer a faster boot time. What kind of improvements in speed should I expect if I swap out the hard drive with an SSD? What is the level of expense and difficulty involved in the install? Would I be better off just getting a newer notebook with an SSD already installed? What is the best source for a suitable SSD?

Can a netbook effectively run Powerpoint? If so, any recommendations? The primary use would be regular ol' netbook tasks (browsing the net, email). However, as an attorney, I also occasionally need a laptop to display Powerpoint slides via the courtroom's newfangled electronic display system (through the VGA port). Will a netbook be able to do this in a passably quick manner with an older version of Powerpoint / a similar program? With added RAM? Please justify my purchase of a $350 toy.
