More medical woes

Are my meds healing my injury or just removing the pain?

I'm taking 2100mg Gabapentin daily for an impinged nerve in my neck due to degenerative disc disease and stenosis. I want to step down off the drug because of the side effects I'm experiencing. If the drug is actually doing something to heal the problem then I won't, but if it's just acting as a pain reliever with no other benefits then I'd prefer the pain over the side effects. What was long-term recovery like for superficial peroneal nerve release?

About three and a half weeks ago I had surgery on my lower right leg to release my superficial peroneal nerve from the clutches of entrapment in a herniated muscle and hopefully restore my foot to fully operational status. My surgeon was very optimistic, but I'm less so. [more inside]

EMG on wrong side?

The pinky and ring fingers on both my hands have numbness, tingling, very mild pain, or weakness typical of ulnar nerve compression. I've recently had my first EMG with needles, but when sticking the hand, the doctor stuck needles only near the thumb and index finger. Does it make any sense that they would test nerves only on the opposite side of the hand that has problems? [more inside]

Dealing with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome/stress in another country.

I was recently diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and I am having a very difficult time dealing with it. I am only 27. Basically tingling in my hands and a tension in my shoulders that does not go away. My blood gets rather restricted and my shoulders tire easily when they are raised above my head, which clued in the doctor to the TOS. At first the doctor thought it might just be a pinched nerve or a hernia but it is occurring on both sides of my body particularly on the palm and in the shoulders. I am living in Japan right now and one of my best friends here just went home to Ireland so I have no one really close to talk to, and thus am dealing with a bunch of stress as well. I am also taking days off of work since the fact that the condition has been steadily getting worse since February is really bringing down my spirits. [more inside]

Nothing worse than having an itch you can't scratch

How do astronauts and other trained professionals deal with itches while in pressurized suits for long durations of time? Does NASA make astronauts undergo "tickle conditioning" to reduce the stress caused by having an itch one can't scratch, or, likewise, the military with fighter pilots? Do the subjects just get used to the feeling, so that the itch deadens? Are antihistamines or similar drugs administered pre-flight? Has weightlessness been found to affect these and related parts of the nervous system that manage sensations of pain, discomfort, heat, cold, etc.?

New Nervous Tick

Four days ago there was a storm. Standing ankle deep in water which had flooded up to my front door step, I stuck my metal key into my apparently 100% metal door and ended up sort of electrocuting myself, feeling a tingle and shock going up my arm. Since then I've had this weird tingling sensation in my right hand and arm up to my elbow... just now I tried to hold up a can of soda my fingers and hand tremble. Now what? [more inside]
