Nero Wolfe Filter: Give me your choices for best Nero Wolfe novels. I recently finished my first Wolfe mystery -- Some Buried Caesar -- and of course I need more. Here's the thing: I refuse to let myself get obsessed. There is no way I am going to allow myself to plow through all 30-plus novels and god knows how many short stories. I am not a young man anymore, so I am limiting myself to 10. So please give me your top choices. Leave out Some Buried Caesar and The Golden Spiders, which will be next.

Can't Rip CDs Except With iTunes

I have several different applications on my PC, all of which can rip CDs: winamp, nero, dbpoweramp, windows media player, and itunes. Suddenly, itunes is the only one which will actually rip a CD, but I hate itunes and don't want to use it. Any suggestions as to why none of these other apps will rip CDs anymore but itunes will? Better yet, any suggestions of how to rectify the situation?

WinAVI crapped out on Vista Premium 64-bit. What other friendly converter such as WinAVI can I use instead to convert xvid/divx/etc to .vob files so I can burn them as a DVD with Nero and such.

Alternatives for Nero Burning ROM?

More burning, less fiddling: alternatives for Nero Burning ROM? Holy cow this app has become nothing but bloatware. Upon starting the install for Nero8 the installer has the audacity to ask if I want to install the Ask Jeeves toolbar? WTF NERO? The custom install has me check-marking a dozen or more optional apps and features? Give me a break.

All I want to do is burn cds and dvds!

So, my question is: what are the good, honest, slim products out there which allow you to burn CDs and DVDs with no fuss and don't require hundreds of megabytes of storage to do it. I prefer GNU products, but have no problems about quality, no-nonsense commercial products either. What are the cool kids using*?

My environment is Windows XP and Server 2003. My burners are dual layer DVD-+RW*!@#@#litebrite-waka-waka models from Lite-On. Completely generic, middle of the road, fine working drives.

*Please don't tell me just to mount my images, I already do that for most things, but I live and work in an environment where I occasionally need to burn CD and DVD images.

Help me not spend $70 on Nero. What is a good piece of free stuff or more moderately priced program that will effectively help me convert stuff I download from the web (avi, torrent stuff) to a DVD or VCD so I can play it on my TV? Previous searches seem to recommend DIKO -- but I can't download a version that works. Also, it seems this question has not been asked for a bit. Perhaps new alternatives have arisen? Thanks for any help!

Why does Nero insist on stretching my files?

Help me make good looking movies with small picture dimensions. My dad has a bunch of 320x240 WMV videos that he would like to burn to DVD. The problem is that Nero seems to insist on burning them at 740x480. As a result the video looks really bad on a TV screen.

I wold like to be able to create a DVD with the smaller (and better looking) resolution videos. Does anyone know how to force Nero to burn DVDs at the native resolution of the source file?

This thread (http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/27791) helped, but we would have to spend about $200 bucks for both the encoder and DVD authoring programs. Clearly, working with Nero would be better. ( I tried using the encoder to make mpeg files and then using Nero, but Nero seems to insist on re-encoding everything. I think I could use something called "smart encoding" but I'm sure if that's what I need or not.)

(My father also has Pixela so instruction on using that would be fine, also. Although I find that programs non-standard interface to be almost inscrutable.)

Choosing my own "file sequence" when burning DVD-R

I'm archiving important data to a DVD-R. In addition to the important data, I'm burning recovery files (QuickPAR PARity files) to the DVD-R so that I can recover the data in case sections of the DVD-R surface are damaged. It would be smart to have my burning software (Nero) "interlace" the recovery files and the archival data across the surface of the DVD-R: (data file, PAR file, data, PAR, data, PAR, ...). How can I make Nero (or any other burning software) do this?

Hello, We have a video project that we have made inside Adobe Premire 1.5. We have tried to burn it to DVD via Premiere, but it kept giving us a record error. We also have Nero 6, but whenever we select DVD Video and place the avi file into the browser, the record button for burning a DVD is not enabled. Thank you in advance for your help.

CD burning with Nero

Nero... the custom crossfader settings, for burning CDs, is working, but not really. What's up with that? I'm making a mix CD for a Christmas gift. I'm trying to set the crossfade between tracks, but the final burn isn't coming out right. The crossfade is there, but there's still a little gap during playback when it switches from track 1 to track 2, for example. I can hear the crossfade at the end of track 1 and at the beginning of track 2, but it doesn't playback smoothly... there's still a gap. I don't think it's the player because I've tested it on multiple players. Sometimes, the burn will get it right between tracks 1 and 2, then screw it up on tracks 3 and 4 or whatever. It's kind of a hit-or-miss type thing. What am I doing wrong?

How do I make the settings in Nero Wave Editor 3 persist? When I fire up Nero Wave Editor 3, the default settings always reset to maximum recording volume and SPDIF. This even happens when I change to line-in and a reasonable recording volume. How do I make my settings persist?

Help make my DVD burner burn. I have a laptop, (generic), that I purchased just over a year ago and haven't been able to burn DVD's with Nero. The drive is an DVD+RW RW8165 and it seems I'm not alone. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find answers.

I am running Windows XP SP2 with 512 RAM. Nero version 6.6.0.16b. The log file is here and the error is Illegal Disc. I am using actual Maxell discs purchased in the States, (I am in China), as well as some SanTeC discs purchased here.

I've considered switching applications but have had no luck with Alcohol 120%. The log file lists SCSIVAX DVD/CD-ROM that is a virtual drive that was added by Alcohol 120%.

The drive works great for burning CD's but I'd really like to be able to perform larger backups.

iPhoto/Nero CD incompatibility?

iPhoto/Nero incompatibility? My daughter has an open CD of jpeg photos she took and burned with Nero 6.0. A friend added some more jpegs using iPhoto. Now the only thing that she has access to with My Computer are the iPhoto files. Dad is supposed to have answers, but I'm stumped.

Sony meddling when writing a DVD with a VAIO?

DVD writing on a VAIO Filter: I have a Sony Vaio A417M and I can't seem to figure out how to write a DVD using any software apart from the one Sony provide. I had a vaio before and it was only possible to write a DVD using Sony supplied software "DVD drag and drop" Is it really Sony meddling? I have tried two versions of Nero 6.x, Roxio 7.5, Alcohol (to burn a DVD image) and ULEAD dvd movie studio (v3 i think) All encounter a non-descript error when they begin to write to the disc.

I suspect Sony are not allowing other software to use the DVD writer to prevent piracy a la ATRAC, but I'm no pirate!

Did anyone come across anything like this and how did you get around it?

Too many USB devices? Whenever I burn a CD with my DVD burner at 48x, I get a really weird problem with the buffer jumping between 20% and 90% percent in Nero. I've determined that this is due to too many USB devices on the same chain (I'm using a USB mouse, keyboard, wireless ethernet, DVD Burner, Palm Pilot and one other random dongle), and when I unplug all but the DVD burner everything works ok.

Is there any way to disable USB devices easily in software, without having to un-plug the chain every time I burn a CD? Are those devices really taking up too much bandwidth for a CD to burn (USB 2.0)?

Burn Winamp playlist contents

I have a Winamp playlist containing hand-picked individual MP3 files from within a 12Gig directory structure. Is there an easy way to give this to Nero so I can burn my playlist ? Any other way to burn just the contents of the playlist, for free of course ?

Botched Data DVD

How can I get files off an improperly finalized data DVD? (WinXP, Nero) I backed up some files on a data DVD with Nero. I believe that everything burned fine but the disc wasn't properly finalized. Either way, I can't read from the disc. When I open it in Nero, I see one session with two tracks: one is 4 GB Joliet, the other has 10 KB and just says Data (mode 1). I'm not sure what that means, but Nero seems to see the files I wrote to the disc, but it won't let me finalize the DVD. (It tells me the disc is not writable.)

These are my only backups, and I really like to get the files off the DVD (provided they're really there.) Is there any utility or trick that might let me read the data?

Nero spitting out blank CDRs

Has anyone ever had NERO spit out blank CDRs? [More inside] I've had NERO a pretty long time and have never had trouble with it. But about a month ago I got a new drive and reinstalled NERO, and then a week ago I got a new CD/DVD burner.

Since then, I've been trying to burn some movies and music, but it keeps spitting out blank CDRs (or at least CDRs my comp and DVD player won't recognize). Is there some setting in NERO that I could have forgotten? I also notice that no matter what format I try to burn, it makes me save an image file (.nrg) which never used to happen. Thanks for any suggestions...

My CD burner isn't working! Last night, I was burning a few CDs for friends. I successfully finished three, but after that things stopped working. I'm using Nero, and when I try to burn a CD the status just sits at lead-in. My burner sounds like it's spinning up, then slowing down, spinning up, then slowing down, over and over, and its light is not on. [mi] Tonight, I tried again. I successfully burned a one-track CD (Rick James - Superfreak). Now I'm trying to burn a Strokes album, but I'm having the same problem as before. What happened to my burner?

My girlfriend's computer is from the late Jurassic period-- Gateway with an AMD 500-something mhz processor and 64 megs of RAM running 98 SE. It used to burn cd's from her mp3 collection generally flawlessly, but lately any cd made starts late in the first song and the track numbering is off (e.g. the player dosen't change from "2" to "3" until the middle of track 3.)

We switched from Roxio to Nero, tried converting to .wav with Winamp beforehand, but it's still off.

Any idea what the problem might be?

I want to record a Disk at Once CD, using a .toc file on my computer. I have all the files I need that are mentioned in the Table of Contents file, and it is very simple. The TOC is in this post. I have Nero 6 platinum but the burned CD has an issue. You'll see why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty simple, huh? The game is LOOM, from 1990. I am upgrading the 16 color adlib version to the CD-Rom version that has 256 colors and full speech, which you can download at www.the-underdogs.net. What program out there will read a vanilla TOC file and burn it like it is? When I used Nero I added the silence before the audio but it still had audio glitches, the game data was fine though. Please, help me. This is the greatest game ever made. E-mail me if you want to borrow a copy, for research puroposes.
