Under financial pressure. My house isn't selling. I want to avoid foreclosure and don't care about making a profit. It's the original mortgage; a 30-year fixed at 5.5% in good condition (attractive older house and well maintained) in a decent neighborhood (property values steady as those in more expensive neighborhoods fall). SeattleSketchynessFilter: I've just been informed that for the next few months, I'll be living on the 1000 block of East Terrace Street in Seattle. While I know that Seattle is generally a pretty safe city, the address in the International District, along with the close proximity to the city's sole remaining major public housing project is setting off some alarm bells in my mind. At the same time, it's quite hard to figure out how how sketchy a neighborhood is online. So before I raise a stink and try to move someplace else, I ask Seattle Metafiltes: just what kind of a neighborhood is this, and might I, as someone who enjoys being able to walk to restaurants/shops, find it a decent place to live?

Name this San Francisco Neighborhood! I'm in the process of moving from Chicago to SF and am considering an apartment on Geary between Baker and Lyon. It's been described as being in "Lower Pacific Heights", but I've since learned that this is something of a misnomer - a way for realtors to make the place sound more impressive than it is. So where is this apartment in actuality? [more inside]

I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my neighborhood, maybe 10 houses on my block (across the street and adjacent to us). Basic setup would be that I have the wired DSL internet connection and I share it over 802.11b/g. I've looked into omni-directional 2.4ghz antennas, but I'm not sure how sensitive it would need to be, nor do I know if the clients are going to need directional antennas. What US neighborhoods are best known for interesting examples of Craftsman homes? I know about the various bay area neighborhoods - the Maybecks of the Berkeley hills, Westwood Park in SF, etc.; I'm familiar with Pasadena and its Bungalow Heaven, as well as Santa Barbara's many restored bungalows - and I'm familiar with similar neighborhoods here in Sacramento, where I live now. What I'm mainly looking for are out of the way, underrated or less-known neighborhoods with interesting historical and architectural character, specifically expressed in homes built in the Craftsman aesthetic - from the conservative late Victorian through the Prairie and Mission revival. NYC neighborhood question: Last night I was at the restaurant Son Cubano, at 9th Ave and 14th Street, for the first time, and I spent about 20 minutes before entering the restaurant walking around the area. I'm decently familiar with NYC, but this was my first time wandering this particular neighborhood. I loved the feel of it, and would like to know more for purposes of considering it as a place to call home. So...what is this neighborhood called? Who lives here? What are some other cool restaurants/bars/etc. to check out? It felt somewhat desolate (relatively speaking) which is part of what I liked about it. I got the sense it was in the process of being "revitalized"-- are there still deals to be had, or is it too late?
