Help me find a Jewish fable about bluffing in a negotiation

When I was young, I remember reading a Jewish fable, or maybe even many different versions of a fable, about a wily trickster who outwits someone or something who is holding him or his community hostage. It might have been Herschel or Hillel, but whoever it is, he succeeds by bluffing that he is going to do something awful if he doesn't get what he wants. [more inside]

About to negotiate my first business contract. Help me get it right.

I have been offered a possible role to manage a section of a start up company. I have expertise in the area I would be managing, but I have never negotiated a contract or anything like it in business and I have no idea how it goes. I don't want to work for free, but I don't want to be inappropriately stingy with my contribution, prior to having a formal contract. [more inside]

How can I pay the right fare from Pearson Airport with the least hassle?

I regularly get a taxi at Toronto Pearson Airport to my home in Toronto. There's a flat fare of $47, but if I just get into a cab, about one-third of the time the driver will try to charge me $55 (the rate for the center of downtown) or a meter fare (usually closer to $60). What's the best way to avoid this? [more inside]

Performance review - am I being paid less?

My performance review is coming up, and after three years at the company, I'm doing the same job as a co-worker, which wasn't the job I was hired to do. I believe I am fairly compensated, and generally like my job. However as a female person twenty years younger than the male person I am sharing job duties with, I wonder if I should take the opportunity to address salary equity in a performance review or not. How do you negotiate for influence?

It is likely that soon I will be in a possession of a job offer from one of my company's competitors. As sometimes happens, my job search started out of frustration with certain issues in my current workplace rather than a true incompatibility. Ideally, I would love to stay where I am, but in an improved situation; the problem is that that things I want are not concrete things like a promotion or a raise, but rather vague like a greater influence on design and planning, and greater opportunities for leadership roles. How to translate these "wants" into specific, measurable goals? [more inside]

Do I ask for a raise?

Do I ask for a raise? My long-term contract is being renewed for the second time, and for the second time on the "same terms", i.e. no increase in my hourly rate. I'm torn between asking for a raise because "I should" - my role and responsibilities have expanded greatly over time - and accepting the offer because, well, I'm not going to leave over this and based on my cursory knowledge of similar positions elsewhere I'm still paid competitively. And I don't want to make a fuss. [more inside]

Salary negotiation moving from non-profit to for profit company?

Hi everyone- I have a friend who is close to an offer at for-profit company in NYC, but his background is in non-profit. He wants to ask for a salary in the range that his research shows is a fair for his experience level and the industry standard. However, this amount is nearly $25,000 higher than his current non-profit salary, and he is afraid that revealing his salary history will not allow him to negotiate a fair rate. Does anyone have advice or has been through a similar transition themselves? Thank you in advance for your assistance. -FH

How much will the surgical practice get for doing a procedure?

Negotiating self pay medical bill. I want to have an idea of how much the surgical practice/surgeon would have been paid if the patient had had insurance. How much will they get if they hire a collection agency? Do they get a percentage or just sell the debit for a fixed price? The patient is being billed 1850.00 self pay for the procedure. The procedure was at a major Boston hospital and the patient is being billed self pay due to a temporary lapse in subsidized insurance. The hospital has already written off the bill. The billing date was sometime around the end of March 2013. The patient has been told by the billing organization that represents the surgeon that they have to deal directly with the surgeon or their practice.

Laying the Golden Egg: Employer unilaterally shifting my contract.

Shortly after my six month review, my employer has began to play loose with the terms of a pretty weak contract, and it's impairing my performance as I weigh whether I need to shift my own priorities. Hi. I am looking for recommendations as to which o the following titles I should purchase; I am very new to this topic. Additionally, this is an area of legal education that my forthcoming university in England will not cover (it is not included in their LLB and generally in UK universities).
