How much job-hopping is too much?

Husband, let’s call him J, has had a good interview at another company in town that he’d like to work for, and is going in for a second interview. He feels confident that they want to hire him. The concern is how hopping jobs in a short time will affect his resume and future prospects if it’s a clear pattern. Is this too much job hopping? [more inside]

Hola Mefi, Here's the rub: I work at a place that I do not like very much, but is on the up and up with lots of funding. Average % raise with promotion?

I was promoted at work, but the raise accompanying it was only 5%, which seems low to me. I'm trying to figure out if my expectations are out of line, so I'm curious what % increases others have personally received (or given out) when getting promoted in your company, as well as what general field you work in for context. I'm also interested in strategies for going back to press for more in a pretty corporate environment, or if I should even bother trying?

There's lowball, and then there's LOWBALL

I am a freelancer who usually works on 6-12 month contracts. Today I received an offer for a lengthy project that was priced at about 10% of the going rate. I absolutely cannot take a project at that rate and would typically just decline nicely. But I sincerely believe there has been a mistake somewhere along the line. I don't want to turn down a great job because someone somewhere misplaced a comma or misread a contract form. What is the most diplomatic way for me to try and get to the bottom of this? How do I convince my employer to let me go from full-time to part-time?

I engaged in PREPARATORY_ACTIVITY for this?!

I originally did a few phone interviews at BIG_COMPANY for a management role related to my Ph.D. in SCIENTIFIC_FIELD. The recruiter at BIG_COMPANY is instead offering me an onsite interview for a much more tedious non-management role — with the intention of "ideally" "probably" assigning me some direct reports over time and eventually transitioning me into the management role I originally applied for. How do you negotiate for influence?

It is likely that soon I will be in a possession of a job offer from one of my company's competitors. As sometimes happens, my job search started out of frustration with certain issues in my current workplace rather than a true incompatibility.
