OldNewsFollowUpFilter: Whatever happened to all those kids whose parents trekked across the good ol' US of A last summer to legally abandon them at Nebraska hospitals? (Not that my kids were driving me crazy this morning before school or anything, mind you...) ;)

Yeah, I read this, but do we know the aftermath of any actual cases...?

Road trip through Western US

What is there to see on I-80 in the Western US? In a few weeks, I will be on a road trip from San Francisco to Kansas City, helping my sister move her worldly belongings in a minivan to her new home city. There will be three of us going, and we figure that it's about a three day trip along I-80. This isn't a vacation, but none of us has been to this part of the country before and we'd like to find interesting things to stop at along the way to break up the monotony of the highway.

Our route takes us through Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, WY, and Lincoln, NE. What are some cool/interesting/historical sites to see along the way?

Looking at the map, I see that if we get off of I-80 in Sacramento and take US-50 to Carson City and then connect back up to I-80 in Reno, we'll pass Lake Tahoe and add one more state capital to the trip (we'll be passing through the capital of every state we hit, except Missouri). Are there any other detours that will might add interest but won't add more than an hour or two to the entire trip?

Traditional Family car trip

Taking our 5 & 7 year old daughters by car to Lincoln, Nebraska and back from Boston, stopping off in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Anything along the way we shouldn't miss? We're pretty well versed and traveled East of the Ohio river, but know the mid-west not a bit. Any "must-sees" for a young audience between PA and Nebraska?

Thanks in advance.

Great lodgings also appreciated.

Wine Vendors in the Land of Corn Huskers

My girlfriend is in Lincoln, Nebraska on a business trip and is looking for a good wine shop to recommend a bottle or two of something interesting that she can't get back home in Montreal. The selection of wine (both domestic and imported) in major US centres easily outstrips that of anywhere in Canada. The question is, what does a small town in Nebraska have to offer?

The g/f hasn't got much useful help from her Nebraskan branch coworkers, so I put the question to you, as to whether there is a good place to buy wine in Lincoln and where it would be? She aims to go shopping tomorrow while her fellow Montrealers hit up the outlet stores.

What to do in Lincoln?

Stopping in Lincoln, NE tomorrow (Thursday) night. Where to eat, sleep, and be merry? Four friends and I are going on a road trip to Minnesota to attend a wedding. We will be stopping in Lincoln, NE. We will get there sometime in the evening tomorrow. We would like to eat some good food, find a bar to hang out/drink/dance/ect., and stay in a hotel/motel. We would like to stay in a place where we can do all of these things without driving (if possible). I noticed that there was an earlier post about Lincoln where someone asked about moving from Portland to do a ph.d. My friends and I are mostly from the midwest so we have a general idea about the people and culture. We just want food, goodtimes, and sleep. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Last night, at the beginning of the Oklahoma - Nebraska game, they had a rock band doing an intro. It was a hard and fast song, with the corus of 'invincible.' It appeared to be tied into a reference for Pontiac. Does anyone know who the rock band was?

What are your thoughts on Lincoln NB?

What are your thoughts on Lincoln, NB? I'm 30, I'm liberal, I'm cool, I loved living in Portland, OR. I don't go clubbing, I like indie rock and dive bars, while not a vegetarian, I like veggie options and good food all around. Would Lincoln work out or am I setting myself up for disaster by thinking of going there for a PhD program at UNL?

Songs about Western and Midwestern States?

Mixtape filter: I need songs that reference any of the states of California, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Utah. The boyfriend and I are taking a roadtrip to all of these places. I want to include some songs on this mix about the states we will be visiting. Even a one line mention is okay, or even songs that allude to geographical areas or special traits about the state. Bonus points if it's folk or metal.

Things I'm thinking of already:
-"North Dakota" by Lyle Lovett
-"Number 6 Driver" by Eddie From Ohio (lyrics: "and there's a cold wind blowin' in Wyoming...")
-"Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen's Nebraska

I really like Springsteen's Nebraska. I've never been able to put my finger on why I like it so much and why it moves me: maybe it is the bare bones orchestration. The lyrical narratives. The dusty simplicity of it. But I like it a lot. What label should that sound be called? What else is like Nebraska that I should try out? Yes, I do have Ghost of Tom Joad and his newest one, Devils + Dust, which are supposed be Nebraska-esque. But they don't anything for me like Nebraska does.

I would also be interested in people trying to help me put my finger on why I like it so much.

Carpet (glue) bombing...

RenovationFilter: We just bought an old library out on the great plains. Yes, library. But that's not the point. It's a wonderful, hundred-year-old brick building. The floors are beautiful, straight-grained, old-growth fir. Unfortunately.... ...some time in the mid-1950's, the town decided it would be an excellent idea to glue horrid industrial carpeting directly to the floors. We pulled up the carpet, but there is glue residue covering every square inch of the floor.

First, we tried scraping up the glue with a paint-scraper, to no avail. Next, we got a drum sander with 30-something-grit paper, and the glue just gummed it up within a few feet each time we ran it.

We switched to a 60-something-grit paper to try to sand it off a layer at a time, but we only got a little further before it gummed up completely.

We have well over 1300 square feet of floor to refinish-- is there anything we can do to this glue to weaken it (without harming the floors) so we don't have make multiple passes and go through literally hundreds of sheets of paper (at 2 bucks a pop)?

(FYI, we've tried: acetone, paint thinner, diluted paint thinner left on overnight, plain old powdered dishwasher detergent dissolved in water, and commercial adhesive remover.)

On a whim, I'm driving from Milwaukee to San Francisco to Seattle and back to Milwaukee again. I'll be going through WI, IL, IA, NE, CO, UT, NV, CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, SD, and MN and am looking for some tips on sights I shouldn't miss. Any suggestions? I also forgot to ask, anybody know of any free wifi hookups in any of those states? It would be nice to access the internet from my own laptop. Muchas gracias!
