I recently read Mother Earth Motherboard by Neal Stephenson and enjoyed learning about modern telecommunications hardware. I've also enjoyed reading Cryptonomicon for its investigation of game theory and crypto. Do you know of any similar works that delve into modern secure communication? [more inside]
In an effort to describe Unix, Neal Stephenson draws a comparison to the Hole Hawg, an unattractive but highly functional drill used by contractors but not everyday homeowners. Are there any other 'Hole Hawg' tools out there; tools that are valued by experts but either useless, dangerous, or misunderstood by laymen? [more inside]

Inspired by this question, I found myself wondering - is there any way to find out what a given author's next book will be? Sort of like those 'screenplay sales' pages where it lists what a given production company has purchased, I guess.
NealStephensonFilter: I just bought Quicksilver in the airport, am enjoying it, but curious if I should be reading Cryptonomicon first. Any opinions?
