I am a Canadian who has seen almost no basketball. I want to trounce my fiance in our yearly March Madness bracket in a few months, or, barring that, have lots of fun intelligently talking about predictions/rankings/upsets/games with him in February and March. What sites or books should I read for good, regular, in-depth college basketball analysis (or the history of NCAA, or whatever), either (a) now or (b) after I learn what basketball jargon means? We had a NCAA March Madness contest at work, where about 40 of us all filled out brackets on ESPN's site. One of us - the winner of our group - did very well and ended up ranked 6000th out of all 13 million ESPN brackets - top .05%. My question is, was this really statistically unlikely or, given that there were 40 of us, is it unsurprising one of us did that well (e.g., the birthday problem)? What mathematical tools would one use evaluate this question? Thanks!
I guess this is why they say don't gamble at work, but in the work pool the top two bracket positions are occupied by two people who haven't paid and ignored messages to pay, though not directed at them specifically. [more inside]
Looking for 1980s and 1990s baseball rosters and stats specifically for Indiana University, any suggestions? baseball-reference.com doesn't seem to have college ball info at all, although perhaps I am missing something. IU proper only provides online records that go back to 2005. One site in particular appears to focus on providing college ball stats as a differentiator, thebaseballcube.com, but they only go back to 2002. [more inside]
I am looking for a database or an aggregator that runs for atleast 4 or 5 years and shows people who have done exceptionally well in their NCAA bracket picks. I do realize that past performance is not an idnicator of future performance but I would still like to obtain this information. Are there any individuals who have done exceptionally well in these brackets on a consistent basis over some set period of time?

When I was in college, watching my college's basketball team play brought me joy and catharsis. I really identified with the players and felt like we were "all in this together." As an adult nearly 10 years out of college, that feeling eludes me. The players look like kids! When I travel to the games the alumni section is staid and boring! If you are a fan of your college's basketball team (or really, any college b-ball team), how do you maintain the interest, and feel passionate about the game, as an adult? [more inside]

Math/sports question! I entered a "Square pool" (purely theoretical money at stake :) ), for the NCAA basketball tournament. I am curious if there are better numbers to have, and why that would be the case. More information inside. [more inside]
I played one season of soccer in 2003 for a NJCAA school. I am now 28 years old and want to play NCAA soccer. Am I eligible? for how many years? P.S I have received my bachelors degree from an NCAA school but played no sports there. I have tried googling to no avail. A link or citation would be very useful! I was considering getting a lawyer to help me sort this out once and for all, but maybe metafilter can do it!

I'd like to buy a set of sheets and a comforter (queen size) with a University of Michigan design--but I can't find much that isn't made out of jersey, which would never stand up to the wear and tear of the dog. Any ideas where to find these (pref. online)? [more inside]
I like playing in sports-related picking contests with friends. In the fall, I play in a football pool in which each participant picks every NFL game against the spread, and the winner is the person who has the most correct picks over the entire season. Right now, I'm in a couple of NCAA basketball pools. What other contests like these can I organize? [more inside]

Here is the situation. I live near DC and would like to attend the Purdue - Baylor game, which is the 2nd game of session 1 on Thursday afternoon. Given that none of the 4 schools involved (Purdue - Baylor - Xavier - Georgia) are from the DC area, and none of them inspire particularly national followings, do you think I can score a good deal by waiting until after game 1 starts and working the ticket resellers loitering around the Verizon Center? I seem to recall watching plenty of first round games on TV where the arena was not even close to full because the teams were not local. I can buy on Ebay for close to face value, but if odds are good that I can save $100 on a pair of tickets by waiting until the last possible second, I'll take the risk. After all it's just a basketball game. Looking for input from anybody that might have attended early round games under similar circumstances in recent years.
