Gas, oil, electric? Which new furnace to get in Seattle

I live in a 1911 Craftsman in Seattle. The heating situation is... pretty weird. (See the "more inside".) My 42-year-old oil furnace still works like a champ, but the oil company folks say they won't service it any more and it has to be replaced. I have been searching and searching to try to figure out the best way to deal with this before it gets cold out, but I am not finding what I need. Should I change my heating method and can people recommend whom I might call for this? [more inside]

Natural Gas Smell

I did something colossally stupid this evening: Put up some pasta on the stove and then fell promptly asleep for a little while on the couch. Woke up to a terrible smell of natural gas. Found the water in the pot had spilled over and doused the flame of the burner it was cooking on. With the gas on high. It was probably like that for about 10 minutes or so. And now, four hours later, the house still has a strong-ish odor. Here is my question: does the smell indicate that gas is still present in the house, and if so, should I be concerned for the health and safety of my small children, who are sleeping a hallway away from the kitchen? Help me restore a respectable grilling setup

My house came with a grill on the back porch. It wasn't well-maintained then and it's gotten worse through a few years of neglect. If I could easily and inexpensively repair it I'd like to, but if not I'd like to replace it. Complicating factors: it uses natural gas and is post-mounted. [more inside]

What's it like to live next to a hydrofracking site?

I'm looking for stories about hydrofracking. Specifically, for stories about how a drilling company obtains leases and commences operation, and how it manages its relationships with the locals. Ideally I'd like stories from the perspective of neighbors and people in the local community where they have operated, but stories from the drilling company side would be interesting, too. Gas grill using natural gas?

I'm beginning to look into propane barbeques. Now, I have a natural gas outlet/line already installed on my deck, and I'd much rather use that than deal with propane tanks. I see plenty of gas BBQ conversion kits available online, but A. How safe/easy is this conversion to do yourself? B. Does it need to be done professionally / follow some city code? [more inside]

converting my house heating from oil to natural gas

Please explain gas company jargon before I explode

I'm helping out a small not-for-profit with their financials and cost-containment. I've received a letter from our local natural gas provider which is confusing and (of course) it has been impossible to find anyone at the company who can give me a straight answer. So, it is up to me to decide, should we take their offer or not when it comes to signing a contract for gas rates? [more inside]

Why does one corner of my house smell like natural gas? Especially when there are no leaks in the house?

I've had a persistent natural gas smell in my house for the past 10 days. The power company shut it off for about 5 days, my landlord went through two times with a plumber to find any potential leaks, and then had to get a city inspector to verify that there are no leaks. So the gas is back on and it's still smells - what's going on and how do I stop it? [more inside]

How can I tell if my stove is slowly leaking gas?

GasLeakFilter:
This evening, I installed the 1963 Kenmore Griddletop I'd purchased a few weeks ago into my kitchen. At the re-sell shop where it was purchased, I was shownthat all the burners worked, that there were no leaks (some sort of geiger counter). At any rate, I suddenly have a weird sort of sore throat, and I'm wondering if the damn thing isn't leaking. So: first, how do I determine if it's leaking, and two, what are the signs of low-level natural gas poisoning?
(I *did* shut off the gas valve and have range hood fan going, just in case)

How do I start a (gas) fire?

Dang, it's cold! I sure would like to sit around a toasty fire. And hey, look over there! It's a perfectly good fireplace... but we just bought this house in July and have never used it. We know it uses natural gas, as evidenced by the key-knob that releases the fumes. But we don't see any pilot light. It might be electric starting, but no switch is evident, and being in a circa 1985 house, I doubt it. So... anybody ever used one of these things?
