Winter accessible natural hot spring in Iceland near Reykjavik?

Non-mountaineer, non-young folk looking for a natural hot spring suitable for bathing within an hour or so of non-offroad driving from Reykjavik. The walk in from the road might be as much as an hour if it isn't a treacherous, hard-to-follow path. Accessible in January and February with estimates of it's sensitivity to unfavorable weather conditions. An opportunity for a tranquil and wild geothermal experience (ie: a civilized uncivilized experience). [more inside]

Need computer science maven! Predicate languages...

I was peripherally involved in a recent work project predicate languages parsing and some natural language. I am interested in learning about modern development environments in these areas. Very basic and on up - I know what predicates are and natural language processing at a beginner level, decent understanding of code and networks, but not computer scientist. I want to easily parse and database a string of predicates from another application, set a value, quickly evaluate only if relevant, evaluate them against a database and set a shared memory location. All thoughts appreciated!

Do any truly natural, low sugar chewy candies exist?

I think it would be AWESOME to have some chewy, honey or other naturally sweetened candy, which are not all that sweet, just to help us with oral fixations. I personally don't smoke but am needing to begin a very long progress of eating in moderation, and I tend to eat sweets when I'm bored. [more inside]

Tips for wintering my herbs indoors?

Three of the hardier herbs we had been growing in our back yard--sage, mint, and lavender--survived our absent-minded neglect and made it through the summer. As the temperatures drop, we've taken them indoors for the winter. We can provide either 1) warmth and artificial light, or 2) cold protection from the elements, but natural light all day long. What's better? [more inside]

Looking for video sources/movie references for natural phenomena

I'm searching for visual reference material, in the area of kinetic natural phenomena - think falling rocks, volcanic eruptions, flowing magma, good tornado sequences, anything menacing, optimally POV. Photorealistic preferable, CG perfectly suitable, any duration, web or DVD sourced, docs or movies. Thanks!

I want to cancel my natural gas service this summer. Is that possible?

I would like to cancel my natural gas service this summer. Last year, I didn't use any natural gas during June-August. I have a gas furnace and also a gas stove/fireplace. I do not have a hot water heater since that's supplied by the building. I don't cook or use the fireplace. [more inside]

Natural Gas Furnace Producing a Whole Lotta Gas Smell

Last night around 5 in the morning, we woke up because it smelled like natural gas--hard. After determining it wasn't coming from the oven, I remembered groggily to check the maintenance closet in our hallway, which contains two water heaters--one for our apartment, one for the apartment next door--and the natural gas furnace that heats our apartment through vents. I think something is happening to our furnace that causes it to do this, but I don't know what; I managed to stop it, but I'm not sure how. [more inside]

Death and DIY-filter! My dad, who is older but is not quite elderly or in dire straits with regards to his health, has always expressed a wish to be buried in as natural a way as possible. Think '1920s home burial with family dug grave' instead of 'put me in a biodegradable box made from reclaimed, waste wood fiber next to fifi the cat in a manicured cemetery' and you'll have the gist of what he's thinking. Positive religious spin on Katrina

There's a quote from Criminal Minds that has stuck in my head: Gideon: After Hurricane Katrina I read some essays by religious scholars. One writer said God was punishing America for its immorality; New Orleans was a wicked city, like Sodom and Gomorrah. Another one, a priest from New Orleans, he thought the hurricane was proof of God's love. Those levees didn't break until after the storm was over; if they'd broken sooner, thousands would have died. Sooo...is there any truth to that quotation? [more inside]

Pacific Northwest Frog (Toad?) ID needed

A poorly-maintained ex Ornamental Carp Pond in Kenmore, Washington has unexpectedly become home to three lovely amphibians, 3-4 inches long. Brownish bodies, greenish heads (the green could be due to algae and weeds.) The most distinguishing feature of these little guys is a sound I have never heard a frog make: a "yowp" or "yelp" noise, which they make when they are startled into jumping back into the pond. Any clues?

Holistic, beautiful, affordable retreat in nature for the Breast Cancer threatened

After scary "you may have breast cancer" tests over the last year and a winter of too much flu and allergy-induced misery, I need a long-weekend getaway to a beautiful, allergen-free or almost free retreat in our majestic country. For a very affordable price. I feel like I need physical and emotional healing and restoration on this trip. I like restorative (or Iyengar) yoga, organic food, massage, hikes/walks outside, swimming in warm water, etc. I want to be around DOWN TO EARTH, interesting (not spooky spiritual) healing people. In a lovely place. I can do a house swap or retreat swap and a barter thing - I have good massage therapy skills and license....and a charming place in a hip village in a cool-to-visit city with a lovely guest room to rent. Possibly moving to the bay area?

Help an older couple move to the bay area-My parents are interested in moving to the bay area and are visiting this week to check out some possibilities. Do you have recommendations for areas/communities that might be a good fit for them? If simply eating too many calories caused me to gain weight then I should be permanently gaining weight every time I eat a pizza and feel stuffed.

If simply eating too many calories caused me to gain weight then I should be permanently gaining weight every time I eat a pizza and feel stuffed. Yet, I don’t. What factors decide a person’s natural weight? I was watching a documentary about Rocky (the most recent one) and how Sylvester Stallone got in shape for it and did the last part of the movie first while he was still in good shape. It sounded as if his body was going to just lose shape the moment he stopped training. That made me wonder if even people like Stallone have a natural weight that they must fight against every second of every day. [more inside]
