Hotels/Drinking establishments in Nashville? Texarkana?

Where to stay in Nashville, where to drink? Also, Texarkana? A visual artist friend of mine and I will be driving from Windsor, Ontario, Canada to Nashville, Tennessee, USA tomorrow. We haven't decided on a place to stay, but plan to be in town for ~8pm. Where should we stay? Where should we go (if possible) to find indie music or some sort of cultural amusement?

In addition to this, we'd like to know if staying in Texarkana (Texas or Arkansas, I don't think it makes much of a difference...) is a good idea, and if so, whether anything is happening there.

We're driving to Austin, and Texarkana seems to be about midway between Nashville & there, so that's how we chose it.

Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Anyone know anthing about Nashville School of Law?

Anyone know anything about Nashville School of Law? I'm working as a legal assistant and plan to go to law school next year. I'm very strongly considering Nashville School of Law as it is affordable and will allow me to keep my day job. If anyone has gone to this, or any night non-traditional, law school, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience. Were you adequately prepared to practice? How was it finding a job? What areas of law were central to the curriculum (specifically public interest)? With a student body consisting of adults with jobs and families, what were the social and study-group aspects like? And anything else you wish to add...

Thanks in advance.

Nashville or Franklin on a Sunday Afternoon

Visiting a friend who lives in Franklin, TN this weekend, but will have Sunday afternoon free. What should I do there or in Nashville on my own? Already spending 1 day with friend each in Franklin and Nashville, so I'm guessing I should go to Nashville.

Interests include but are not limited to techy/sciencey stuff, NASCAR/any sort of vehicle racing, dessert, and unique local things (like Hatch Show Print and the Pantheon which I plan to visit on Saturday).

Difficulties:
1. No car. I can get dropped off anywhere, and then take a taxi back later, but in between needs to be walkable. But I don't mind lots of walking, especially if the area is interesting to look at.
2. Don't want to go sit someplace listening to country music.

Thanks!

Where to go for a midwest photography trip?

I want to go on a photography weekend trip next month. I'm in Chicago, and want to drive no more than 6-8 hours to a destination. With my preferences (inside) in mind, I'd like advice on where to go. Help? Already asked a few friends and got some ideas... looking for more.

The primary focus of this trip (no pun intended) is photography, and secondarily it's just time to sightsee and laze around. I'm looking to shoot nature and also urban goodness - architectural photography and people watching. When I was first researching a trip, SF and Yosemite were the ideals. But plans have scaled back and I'm not going that far, and I'll be driving instead of flying.

Bonus items:

* Walkable city, decent public transit (might use)
* Good food
* Good coffee houses

Friends recommended Nashville, St. Louis, and Detroit. I considered Minneapolis and like it a lot, but have already been there twice. Been to Madison, Milwaukee. In looking at these cities, I have yet to see anything to really tip me over and say, "Wow - I need to go there!" So, any advice on where those things are would be great.

Best public elementary schools in and around Nashville?

Where are the best public elementary schools in and around Nashville, TN? My husband and I, and another couple (the husband of which my husband is going into business with), are moving to Nashville this summer. We'd like to live relatively close to each other. Our friends have a five-year-old who is starting school in September, and so wherever we live has to have good elementary schools. We'd rather not live outside Nashville, since the clients our husbands will be working with will be mostly in Nashville, and we'd like to keep travel to a minimum if possible. We've lived there before, and are familiar with the area, but never paid any attention to the schools there.

We'd like to live in an area that has good elementary schools, but is also a relatively fun place for young couples, and isn't too expensive to live in. People who I've asked about this have recommended Williamson County schools as being the best bet, but we can't afford Brentwood and anywhere else seems a bit too far away from Nashville. So, I'm wondering if all Davidson County public schools are really that bad, or if there are areas or individual schools which are good?

Cool, pedestrian-friendly Nashville apartments?

My boyfriend and I are moving from Boston to Nashville in late May or early June. We are looking to rent a one bedroom and would prefer to pay no more than $600 a month, within city limits or as close to the city as possible. We've been looking in East Nashville as recommended by friends but so far searching via the internet hasn't been extremely helpful. Specific street names/apartments would be greatly appreciated. Ideally, we'd like a swimming pool, washer/drier, and patio. We want to live in as pedestrian of an area as possible, and/or close to trees, a park, etc. Basically, I want to find the place that is most like Boston in Nashville (except, of course, the cost of living part.)

So, please tell me about your favorite neighborhoods and apartments as well as any places to avoid. Thanks!

===

I'm posting this on behalf of my baby sister. I had referred her to these threads already (one two three), and while she found them quite helpful, I think she still desires some up-to-date specific answers.
Charleston or Nashville? And what else?

My wife and I are looking to travel from Friday to Sunday this weekend to either Nashville or Charleston. Help us sort through the madness! We're leaving from Athens, GA, and we can't sort heads from tails on what to do. From her research, Charleston seems a bit more outdoors-friendly, which is less cost-prohibitive for us. The advantage of Nashville is an Iron & Wine concert Sunday night at the Ryman Auditorium, which sounds heavenly.

--

About us:
Both of us enjoy the outdoors as well as the city. We aren't big into the bar scene or the club scene, although we certainly wouldn't be opposed to some local music in Nashville. And economically, we ride the line between "too broke to take this trip" and "just able to afford this trip." So our budget will be somewhere around $300, kind of as a Christmas gift to ourselves. And our open window is from 3:30pm Friday until 7:00am Monday.

--

Plans we've considered:
Spend two nights in Charleston, and spend the days roaming around the city, drinking hot chocolate, learning a bit more about the history of Charleston, throwing the frisbee and relaxing.

Spend two nights in Nashville, and spend the days visiting historic sites, roaming around the city, drinking hot chocolate, listening to classic country music and checking out the interesting aspects of a downtown small town that's also a big town (record stores, used book stores, etc).

Some sort of combination of Chattanooga and Nashville.

Some sort of combination of Savannah and Charleston.

--

We aren't opposed to camping, as long as we have somewhere to shower up over the weekend. We'd like to spend at least one night in a hotel or bed and breakfast. We'd rather stay somewhere of a decent quality.

--

I know I'm not giving much direction, but I'm looking for some good ideas of things to do/places to stay that will help us make a good decision with our free weekend. Thanks!

Suggestions for Memphis, Nashville, and Little Rock -- what to do and where to stay..

My wife and I are taking a trip to Memphis, Nashville, and Little Rock next week.. Need help on what to do and where to stay.. Planning on flying into Memphis and heading straight to Nashville for 1-2 nights.. On Sunday, head back to Memphis. Spend Monday in Little Rock, at the Clinton Library and perhaps other suggested places, and then spend Tuesday in Memphis before returning home that evening.

Comments? What should we do besides the obvious -- Graceland, seeing the Grand 'ole Oprey..? Where should we stay? Is it worth spending the money to be downtown so we can enjoy the nightlife and have a few drinks and not worry about driving? Wife and I -- we're in our 20s.. Friday - Tuesday.

Thank you!

The closest I can find is the property value assessment on my property. I need this to finish my taxes, but these sites seem annoyingly impenetrable. Even the site map doesn't offer the direct link and I have talked to people who have found their records online.
Driving from Laguardia to Nashville. Any tips? I'll be leaving New York at around 4:00 PM tomorrow, earlier if possible (don't want to get caught in rush hour if I can help it.) Google maps says I-78 West to I-81 South. What are the toll road costs I need to worry about? Traffic gotchas? Local tips and tricks?

I'm interested primarily in making best speed, so sight-seeing will have to wait for another time / question.

I'm also interested in learning about road-warrior tips; I haven't pulled a long haul like this in quite a while (read: over 10 years) and I'll be going solo unfortunately.
Lunch in Nashville?

I'm looking for some lunchy type places in SW Nashville to try - more details inside. Hey Nashville folks... I recently started a new job around the Vandy/music row area.

Since I don't have friends here yet, most of my lunches are with me, myself and a book. I live just a little too far away from home to drive up there for an hour lunch.

I'm not horribly familiar with the Nashville area, so I'm looking for some recommendations of new places to eat nearby.

I'd like some places to try that aren't hugely crowded (yeah, good luck, I know) and where a chick can eat alone without feeling like she's completely out of place.

Bonus points for getting into a table pretty quickly - I like to maximize my reading/not standing around time.

Looking for things to do along the road from Greensboro, NC to Nashville, TN What are some fun/quirky/must-see things along the road to Nashville from Greensboro? I know about Asheville, Great Smoky Mountain. Going to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville. Leaving with friends on 5/8 and must be in Nashville by the evening of 5/10. Any typical 10 story ball of yarn type sites along the way?

Also, things not to miss in Asheville would be great as well.

Thanks!

What to do in Nashville this Saturday?

My wife will be in Nashville for a conference and has Saturday free. Staying at the "Gaylord Opryland" (!), no car. Have never been in that part of the country, would appreciate suggestions for things to do, places to eat. She likes parks, museums, culture (including , but not limited to , traditional & alternative country music). Any local events of interest? What kind of weather can be expected?

Need tips on restaurants/places to visit in Nashville, TN; Huntsville, AL; and Birmingham, AL...

Need tips on restaurants/places to visit in Nashville, TN; Huntsville, AL; and Birmingham, AL... I will be taking a trip to see a friend that lives in Huntsville, AL; I will fly in to Nashville,TN on Saturday, Feb 17 (Early Afternoon), and then head over to Huntsville, AL later that day; then I will be flying out of Birmingham, AL on the afternoon of Monday, Feb 19...

Essentially I will be in Nashville, TN for about 4-5 hours, in Huntsville, AL 1 full day, and in Birmingham, AL for 4-5 hours...

Any tips on local restaurants (BBQ, etc...), events, and/or places I should visit?

These three posts have many good tips (Nashville, Huntsville, Birmingham) but they are older posts, and I was wondering if there are any seasonal events happening on the holiday weekend...

I plan to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.

Thanks in advance!

Great massage in Nashville?

Can anyone reccommend a good place for a massage in Nashville? The closer to Hendersonville, the better. This is a Christmas gift, so I need to be able to order a gift card through a website or over the phone, as I live several hours away.

I have googled and found a couple in the area, but I have no idea what the quality of service is. So far I've come across: Yana's Salon and Spa and Bodyworks Emporium. Any experience with these or others would be appreciated.

Downtown Nashvile: Where to gather the bloggers?

NashvilleFilter: I am assisting in planning a gathering for a group of library bloggers...and of course, there's So I'm helping plan a get-together for the upcoming LITA Forum, and need to some advice on cool places within walking distance from the Sheraton Nashville Downtown Hotel that would be good for a group of bloggers to gather, grab a drink, and talk.

WiFi access a bonus, but not necessary. Cool vibe a bonus as well...but the key is definitely being able to talk/network and grab a drink or three.

Anyone have a great place we shouldn't miss?

Nashville neighborhoods

I'm considering moving from Portland, OR, to Nashville, TN. I love Portland's cool neighborhoods. Where are the hip neighborhoods in Nashville? Hip for me means proximity to coffee shops, parks, bars, natural food stores, etc. Links to helpful sites about Nashville appreciated.

Where to stay in Nashville?

I'll be making an unexpected trip to Nashville shortly, and am wondering about places to stay on a very tight budget, preferably near the Southern Hills Medical Center. Plus, I don't drive.

One day in Nashville....what to do?

Things to do in Nashville on short notice...like, tomorrow. I'm picking up my wife at the Nashville airport tomorrow, and we're going to spend the day running around. Sat. is my birthday, so the wife has given me free reign to drag her around Nashville. :-)

So, given the following: I'm a geek (scifi fan, comic books, games, etc.), music lover (not all, but some country), foodie (def. going to visit a restaurant supply store or two and get some random cookstuff), and movie fiend. What would anyone suggest for a day in Nashville?

Not interested in: seeing the Opry (been and done), going to the Opryland hotel (ditto), or seeing the Parthenon.
