I currently have a tangle of external drives hooked to my HTPC. Serving that stuff via UPnP is
okay, but I'd like to move my files to a separate device that would then be able to make them available to a motley assortment of devices. Thing is, I'm woefully ignorant about networking and file sharing, having never so much as set up a shared Windows folder. I need help coming up with a game plan.

I want to consolidate the photo collections from 5 PCs and a Mac, fling them onto one drive (regularly backed up) and then access the drive from any of these computers with great convenience. Have you ever done anything like this? Any pointers? More inside...

I'm looking for the best customer-facing remote backup solution that can back up from my network NAS drive. A lot of the customer-facing solutions like MozyHome don't support the NAS drive. Also I'm wondering...with 1 terabyte to back up, won't it take months to upload?

I'm looking for inspiration on how to reduce computer clutter. I run a lot of machines and make them do a lot of cool things, but in a 92sqm apartment where we're also trying to manage massive DVD, magazine, and book libraries, and where my previous work station (which was never all that orderly) has been conquered by my girlfriend's rampaging makeup and sewing stuff, it ain't easy. I want to compartmentalize, organize, and speed up the process of accessing my stuff. Ideas?

Tell me about Network Attached Storage ( NAS )? In particular what current manufactuers should I avoid for a typical 1 terabyte (or greater) RAID array? I'm also interested in general information and pitfalls for NAS devices and implementations.

What's the best device I can buy or build for under $300 that will download (over bittorrent), serve, and maybe even play my video files?

Does anyone have any recommendations for an off-the-shelf NAS that can handle at least 1TB and may be expanded as needed? Drobo, Buffalo TeraStation, etc.?

Looking for a cheap NAS enclosure (~$50) - interested in ximeta netdisk, but I'd rather go with something that doesn't require a software install. For $100ish I could build a cheap VIA C3/C7 server, but a simple HD enclosure would be better. I'm planning to run it off a WRT54g, and have heard that ximeta's get slow wifi performance - could I watch videos over the connection (300mb/hr divx), or would I be restricted to backup and music? If so, what's the cheapest NAS enclosure that isn't a POS that can manage mp3's over wifi?
Something that could do bittorrent would be great, but they seem much more costly.
Most important, I want a NAS that will spin down when not in use so it doesn't kill my non-enterprise HD.

NAS Filter: I'm looking to buy a network storage device to replace the ancient IBM Aptiva running Fedora with Samba/NFS that I've been using for the last six years. I want something that I can attach to my home network and put a 120 - 200 G harddrive into and mount remotely from both Linux and Windows boxen.

I have a new LaCie 800GB Ethernet NAS disk. It's advertised as working well in a cross-platform environment. It sits on my lab's LAN with three XP boxes and three Mac G5s. But it's been trouble from the beginning . . . .
