I currently have a tangle of external drives hooked to my HTPC. Serving that stuff via UPnP is
okay, but I'd like to move my files to a separate device that would then be able to make them available to a motley assortment of devices. Thing is, I'm woefully ignorant about networking and file sharing, having never so much as set up a shared Windows folder. I need help coming up with a game plan.

Please talk to me like I'm stupid. I have a bunch of video files (~5TB...so far) hanging out on a bunch of external hard drives. Right now I just take turns plugging them into whichever laptop I'm going to use to watch the videos. I'd like something a little more convenient and easily accessible from multiple rooms in my small apartment, but I'm not awesome at setting up networky things (I've never successfully gotten two different laptops in my apartment to even "see" each other over the wireless router). What should I do?

I have a mess of ad-hoc backup systems, none of which “just work”. I would like to have a NAS that quietly backs up the cross-platform content I have, and also mirrors it online securely. I should probably budget for about 1-2 TB. I have no problem doing geeky setup stuff, but the less routine stuff I have to remember, the better. System details follow.

I have a WDTV Live box and a NAS drive. My WD live will not properly refresh the contents, insisting that folders are empty when they are not, displaying files I have deleted, and not refreshing to show files I have added. Many files show up in the list 2 or 3 times, though some only show up once. I can't force a refresh, I've tried restarting the WDTV and disconnecting and reconnecting it to the network, but it just keeps showing me the same duplicates. How can I make it work?

Hi,
I am trying to set up a surplus router as a NAS and torrent appliance, to integrate into an existing network. The setup will use two routers, one to provide network and internet to everyone, the other will use TomatoUSB and will be dedicated to torrenting.

What router / NAS combination (or just NAS) do I need to pre-configure and ship to a friend of mine so that I can send files to the NAS over the internet?
He is not at all computer savy. What I am hoping for is a VPN or similar that I can log into without his help and push files / pull files from the drive.

How can I stream DVDs from my Synology NAS to my TV? I want to keep the extras, so I don't want to just rip it to avi or anything.
I assume I need a device that will browse the NAS and mount the DVD and play it, but every streaming device I've found seems to just play simple videos.
Commentary is half the value in any DVD, so if it isn't possible to do this I'd need to have some way to rip the DVD to a video file using the audio from the commentary.

I'd like to transfer (iTunes) music off of an old PC and an even older iMac onto a NAS that plays nicely with our new Mac laptops and even newer Sonos system. I'd also like to use the NAS to automate backups for these two Mac laptops. And I'd like the NAS to back itself up onto a secondary drive. I'm new to networking and back-upping and would like a set it and forget it solution.

Is there any way I can connect my External USB hard drive to my PS3 non-wirelessly while still sharing it wirelessly with other devices (iPad, iPod and other PCs in my house) using an Airport Extreme and a 4 port USB hub? I have a gut feeling that there must be a way to do this but I can't actually work out a real world way to do this. I accept I may potentially need to buy a new cable or two but I can live with that. Any ideas?
