Split/biphasic sleep pattern. Help me adjust it!

This isn't the usual sleep question and I've had a hard time finding answers. Basically I will sleep for a few hours, then wake up for anywhere from 30 min to a hour. Then I go back to sleep. The problem is when this happens later in the morning, so that second "sleepy time" hits at 9 or 10 am. How can I keep that from happening? [more inside]

There is a medical name for this thing. What is it?

At some point in the past 4-6 months I have read a reference to a sleep-related phenomenon that I experience and is apparently super-common based on all my failed googling, but because it is so common I can't find the place where I read the name of the medical term. [more inside]

Bed time tackled, seeking advice for napping 4 month old

I had such great responses and help from my previous question regarding night sleeping problems, ferber method and moving our 4 month old into her own room. Turns out all the Metas were right and I was creating a monster in my head! She cried for 6 minutes and since then doesn't cry when we put her to sleep awake in her crib and sleeps a good 12 hours with one feed! NOW, napping is a HUGE issue. [more inside]

Taking a Rest in Munich

So my parents are on a European riverboat cruise. It is pretty casual, which is nice because they are old and don't have a lot of stamina. However, they have a one day excursion to Munich (tomorrow, in fact) where they won't be able to get back to their boat and my dad is worried that Mom doesn't have the gas in the tank. Is there some place they can chill out in the city for a couple hours and recharge their batteries? [more inside]

Why won't you go to sleep? Question #46233: almost 4 year old version

Our big little man is a few months south of four, he's home with Mom for the summer, and he Will. Not. Nap. He won't even rest. Bed times at the end of the day aren't bad, but for some reason naps are for suckers, and he's no sucker, except without a nap he turns into a tiny terror. How do you deal with your little pistols? I'm tired as hell, but can't take a nap?

I try all the crap like don't focus so much on the falling asleep, just focus on relaxation, breathing, fairly calm/neutral thoughts. What gives? I was fucking tired today (around...2) when I went to take a nap, but after i'm in my bed for a few mins I'm suddenly awake. This is completely puzzling. How can I be tired when I go to bed (in a sorta dark room) and then it's like this sudden switch that says, no no ... don't do that because you'll actually feel better afterwards. [more inside]
