Spare your wrath about 80s music, please, this is my childhood we're talking about.

I've been looking for an old CD my parents used to play when I was little, caled "here come the hits", but it doesn't seem to be anywhere visible. In fact, it seems to have dropped out of existence entirely; I can't even find a tracklisting on the internet so I can gather the songs from other sources. I know "shout" by tears for fears was one of the songs, and "black cars look better in the shade" and "one night in bangkok" are likely contenders. Can somebody help me find an official tracklist for this album of 80's one-hit-wonders so I can get some closure?

Looking for a song that is probably not about beef trucks.

I’m looking for a song I heard a few years ago. It was some kind of techno song, and I remember a spoken line that sounded awfully like "My name is Benny the killer fuck beef truck." I have a feeling those aren’t the actual lyrics. [more inside]

Like an iPhone, only scarier

Name that science-fiction story (yes, another one): I recall reading an SF short story in which everyone carries around a little gadget that always tells them what to do, which everyone willingly obeys, and without which everyone is helpless. I think the gadgets were called "little brother." The story probably dates back to the 50s or 60s (I read it in the 80s—this has nothing to do with Cory Doctorow's "Little Brother," which I have not read).

What song is this?

What song is this? Ethereal and moody vocals (not quite spy, not quite gothic, but leaning ecletic), jazz rock background, sounds a bit like early Goldfrapp, or Morphine, or maybe even Darling Violetta. (All pretty approximate.) Very rough lyrics: I call you Tracy, You get along, You lovely... sing me your song. I call you darling, I know it's strong. I bet... ...and on. Show goes on. Show goes on. I call you ... ... I call you Liza B. I wish I could see That maybe it's only my dream. It's only my dream. Show goes on. Show goes on. I miss... ...queen of bees (beasts?). That honey Suzie, bewitched by me. I think you're... what else can be? ... ... Be my promise breaker, ... delusion maker, ... I wish I could see, It's only my dream. Show goes on, The show goes on.

Do you recognize this music?

Do you recognize this melody? I remember an elementary school friend playing this during his lessons about 15 years ago. This is a 20 second recording of how I remember it now.

Honestly, I would be thrilled with an artist, or even a GENRE.

Can anyone identify the repeated clip of music in this flash movie? Warning: this is more difficult than these things usually are. WARNING: STROBING LIGHTS, ALSO SORT OF OFFENSIVE TOWARDS PEOPLE WITH EPILEPSY.

Please help me name this tune. It was featured in "Summer Games" for the Commodore 64, but it's not the Olympic theme song nor a national anthem (or is it?).

Song on H&M in-store radio

Name that tune! H&M on State Street in Chicago plays this song all the time and every time I go in, I try to get enough lyrics to look it up on the internet and I always fail. Girl singer (not Fiona Apple, but has the same rough edge and approximate range. Her tone is sweeter, though). The first lyric is something like "you've got her picture. you've got her picture. you've got her picture on your wall" and I think there's something about scars toward the end of the song. Name the tune

Name that tune. This [mp3, 100 Kb] is a shamefully crude MIDI reconstruction of part of the tune in question. I'd place it around 1975, Moog type Top 100 pop music; sounds something like Hot Butter but is not. Any ideas what it is?

Who performed this cover of Cher's (ridiculous but awesome) "Belive?"

Remember Cher's "Believe" from a few years ago ("Do you believe in life after love?") I heard an ironic, great version of it on the radio yesterday. I couldn't find it in the station playlists. It has a male vocalist and uses the same vocodor distortion effect on the chorus as the Cher version. Who is it? (PS, it isn't The Luxury Liners.)

Haunted by a song in a goddamn Coke ad

Recently movie theaters 'round here were showing a Coke ad that had some interesting music. The ad was a series of stills telling a story of someone going back in time and giving [the hated product] to various people, running out, pissing off Genghis Khan, etc. The music wasn't in English, sounded Eastern European to my ignorant ears. It had a male voice and a sort of swinging sound. They don't seem to be playing this ad anymore here. What was the music?

Name that tune!! It was used in commercials to advertise the HBO film "Empire Falls", and now to advertise a new show coming in the fall - E-Ring maybe? Anyway - it's kind of pop-rock sounding, male vocal. Lyrics: Something like - even when you cannot hear me ... I'll be right beside you dear.

Name that (old pop classical) tune

Name that tune: pop classical/easy listening, possibly from the 1940s, often heard accompanying black and white images of post-war domestic bliss on TV. Not Holiday For Strings. Here's an mp3 of the first bit, ham-fistedly cobbled together from memory using the gift of MIDI (and unlikely to be note-for-note accurate).
