I have a vague memory of seeing someone perform a percussion piece where they swung a rope in each hand with a weight on the end. They would sometimes allow the weight to strike the wooden resonating chamber to make a "clack" sound. In so doing, they were able to clack out some surprisingly complex rhythms. Does this instrument/technique have a name? What is it? And most importantly, where can I find some videos of people doing it?

I have a piece of a song stuck in my head and it's apparently not enough for google to be of any use. It's an 80's or 90's song, with a guy's voice sort of chanting "ooh ma ma way" in an african-y sounding way with a heavy bass line. I feel like it was used a lot in soundtracks to represent a journey or something like that, because it reminds me of solsbury hill. if anyone can name this song, i know it's you lovely mefites.

A friend of mine's been watching the anime "A Certain Scientific Railgun S", and he's been having trouble identifying one of the incidental music pieces. It's in episode 11, from 17:52 to 20:00--what song is this
(mp3), used here, and which of the OSTs is it on, if any? He says he's searched them all, including a second Railgun S OST which apparently came out yesterday, but he can't seem to find it, though he admits that he might have missed it along the line. Any help you can offer he'd appreciate. Thanks!

Can anybody identify this Chinese language song
? At least, we think it's Chinese. A friend of mine found it somewhere totally devoid of context, and now we're wondering what it is and where it's from. Any help you can give us would be just fine.

Ska band with a horn section. Prominent piano (?) chords on the off-beat, following the pattern I i i iv
. No, that's not a typo: the first tonic chord is major, the rest are minor. Name that tune?

I've heard this pop song a couple times on the jukebox, full of bass guitar. The vocals sound like Steve Winwood and the chorus phrase I think I hear is "hearts on fire", but this song is nothing like Steve Winwood's Hearts On Fire
. Hep meh?

Can anyone on the green tell me if Mit Viel Gluck
by 2 Raumwohnung is a cover of a song and, if so, which song?
The first time I heard this song I was instantly confident that just about anyone could tell me what song the tune came from. Several attempts to find out later and I'm wondering if I'm simply imagining that I know
It's so maddeningly familiar -- particularly around the 1:12 mark.
Can anyone help?

It's a good one. I consider myself a music aficionado, but I still am stumped on this one. My buddy thinks it's from a movie soundtrack, I' not too sure it is - but we both definitely recognize the hook.
We transcribed it into notes for you all - more after the jump... [more inside]

I've been looking for an old CD my parents used to play when I was little, caled "here come the hits", but it doesn't seem to be anywhere visible. In fact, it seems to have dropped out of existence entirely; I can't even find a tracklisting on the internet so I can gather the songs from other sources.
I know "shout" by tears for fears was one of the songs, and "black cars look better in the shade" and "one night in bangkok" are likely contenders. Can somebody help me find an official tracklist for this album of 80's one-hit-wonders so I can get some closure?

Remember Cher's "Believe" from a few years ago ("Do you believe in life after love?")
I heard an ironic, great version of it on the radio yesterday. I couldn't find it in the station playlists. It has a male vocalist and uses the same vocodor distortion effect on the chorus as the Cher version. Who is it? (PS, it isn't The Luxury Liners.)

Name that tune!! It was used in commercials to advertise the HBO film "Empire Falls", and now to advertise a new show coming in the fall - E-Ring maybe? Anyway - it's kind of pop-rock sounding, male vocal. Lyrics: Something like - even when you cannot hear me ... I'll be right beside you dear.

Name that tune: pop classical/easy listening, possibly from the 1940s, often heard accompanying black and white images of post-war domestic bliss on TV. Not Holiday For Strings
. Here's an mp3 of the first bit
, ham-fistedly cobbled together from memory using the gift of MIDI (and unlikely to be note-for-note accurate).
