I'm somewhat notable in my professional field and I meet a ton of new people weekly, as attending social events is part of my job (cocktail parties, art openings, etc.) It often takes 3-4 times before I can remember someone's name, or to even recognize their face. However, they recognize me instantly, and approach me with great familiarity, a hug, like we're buddies. I panic. It gets awkward. "Excuse me, ma'am, how did we meet?" seems such an rude question, especially when they act so intimate with me. (This happens weekly!) What can I say to people in this situation that doesn't offend them, but will divulge our (thinly) established relationship? [more inside]
I am female, I go by like 10 different names (and respond quite well to all of them). I never really had one name as a result.
I have reasons for changing from my birth name, including that there are porn stars with the same name online lol! [more inside]
So my wife is pregnant. Hooray! (Still early enough that we don't know the gender). We're starting to think about names. It seems to me that the world's great hope and story of progress is the expansion of rights and consideration of the views & interests of an ever-widening swath of humanity. Which historical figures stand for pluralism, for rejecting provincialism, in word or deed? I've picked up, but haven't yet read Kwame Anthony Appiah's Cosmopolitanism

Someone I met once mentioned to me that her name, Judy, meant "catastrophe" in Russian, her mother's native language. Is this true? Do I have the details wrong? What Russian word was she talking about?

I work in a lab with rhesus monkeys. They need names. For reasons of historical precedent and notational convenience, lab animals are usually named alphabetically, from A ("Abe") until you run out of monkeys. For reasons of awesomeness, we're naming our monkeys after spunky cartoon characters. So, please help me come up with the best comic/cartoon/superhero names for each letter of the alphabet. I'm posting this on behalf of a teacher friend of mine who wants your ideas:
A university is developing an initiative in which pairs of professors, across disciplines, will meet up with small groups of first year students during their second semester to discuss themes of interest and promote intellectual engagement. These informal meetings will occur at least four times over a couple of months and can take place anywhere: in seminar rooms, in a dorm lounge, at a restaurant, at a professor's home, at an art gallery. So, what do we call these? [more inside]
