Help me name my service rating, community website. We don't like the current proposals for a name and are hoping the creativity of the hive mind can help. The site is an online community which provides reliable reviews of service businesses for homeowners. It is like yelp.com but focused more on home services. Key words that I've been thinking of are grapevine, word of mouth, spread, reliable, guide, service, review, trust, community, neighbor, home.

If the domain is available that is great, but I'm open to all suggestions which might lead to an interesting, memorable name. Thanks in advance.

What's in a (handmade crafts shop) name? ...Connotations of Boutique, Creations, Studio, etc. I'm in the process of opening a small shop online and need a name to use for that and as a presence at local craft fairs and festivals. I'm finding this difficult as any name I'm coming up with sounds pretentious, vague, or is already taken.

I would like to sell knitted items, some jewelry/magnets/accessories, and possibly a few small home-type goods (aprons, etc).

What is coming to mind are names like Noun StoreSynonym - for example, things like Mouse Designs or California Creations. Is there a better formula for coming up with a name for a shop?

The other issue I'm having with naming is that I'm questioning the connotations and impressions of specific StoreSynonyms. An example would be Originals, where my shop would be named Olivia's Originals - would customers then assume that each item in the shop is original and therefore I could only sell one of each item? Would they expect that I would have come up with the original idea for each and every item (there are only so many ways to make a scarf or ipod cozy, and I clearly didn't think of those first)?

Please help - Boutique sounds too snooty and upscale, Studio sounds like I'm selling pottery, Handmade may be too novice, Crafts is generic, and Productions sounds like I'm a theater company. Are my own associations with these terms widely held, or am I totally offbase? Do you even CARE what the name of a shop is, if you like their goods? Have you any other ideas, my beloved MeFites?

help me name my indonesian-jazz-band-with-a-dj! i know i'm not the first to ask for bandname suggestions on askmefi, and i probably wont be the last, as you guys are good at this! while i, unfortunately, *suck* at coming up with band names. and as the marketing dept for the hotel we play at is asking for a name and description by the end of the day (we started the day before yesterday) i could sure use your help! :)

the description part was easy:

"********* mixes dj beats with traditional jazz instruments and vocals to make a sophisticated urban sound thats both funky and easy on the ears."

we sound not entirely unlike united future organization, but we're a band, rather than to 2 djs sampling jazz tracks. personnel: me as the dj, a female vocalist, standup bass, piano, and a percussionist on bongos, congos and shakers.

finding a servicable-but-generic-hotel-band name isn't impossible ("bali beats quintet" is the best i've come up with so far, eh), but one day i hope to take this project to somewhat better things (jakarta jazz festival seems quite plausible for example, and we'll probably release a cd fairly soon) so i'd like to have a somewhat decent, clever, descriptive-but-not-too-obvious name.

oh! we're based in bali! and as we're playing the tourist circuit, incorporating a bali/indonesia/asian sort of theme to our name is *almost* (but not strictly) neccesary.

i know this much: it's a quintet, and if you stick "quintet" at the end of the name, everyone knows it's jazz - i'm not married to that idea, but it's a starting point anyway.

My cousin is changing her first name, but if I had a girl I always wanted to name her my cousin's old name...how do I broach this? I'm happy for her choosing a new name, but I'm wondering is her old name off the table for my own (not yet conceived) child? She's named after my Great Aunt, who I adored. It's a family name, and when I met my husband I said if we have girl, her name must be "X". My cousin and I are close, but 20 years apart. I don't know how to say I love her name and would want to name my own child that. My husband and I are going start trying in the next few months, so while I don't know what the sex of the baby will be...I'm still worried about what to say to my cousin. We don't want to know the sex ahead of time.

Help name my Tech Support Team! I work in a call centre, in an effort to "boost moral" they are asking each team to come up with a name. We are at a loss. We do tech support for a Canadian cellphone carrier and so troubleshoot cellphones, pdas, aircards, etc. Obviously, safe for work is best! Ideas? I am studying reflexology and I need to come up with a name for my business, as part of the course. Help me Mefites, I need inspiration! My chosen name at the moment is Reflections - partly because it sounds like Reflexoloxy and partly because the feet reflect the body, which is kinda the point of reflexology. But I'm sure there's something more original, and possibly shorter, out there I can use. I like Sole-Therapy, but it's already being used.

I've come up with a logo, using two sanskrit symbols (one meaning 'reflection') but I've totally over-designed it and so I think I'm going to start again from scratch - ideas needed for that too!

I'm really looking for something totally original, but simple, which will surprise and impress people! Something that will stand out from the competition.

Anything you come up with will be much appreciated! I'm in the UK if it makes a difference.

My company has developed a case management tool that has been in use for a number of years, and has never had a name. I want to start marketing it, register a domain name, get a logo developed, brochures and turn it into a brand. I would like something eponymous, and to that end I came up with the name “Preside” (as in preside over a case). I’m not that enamoured with it, and the developers hate it- but can't give me a reason. Can the hive mind think of something better? Or is “Preside” OK or just too awful? I can’t continue referring to the software as “our case management application”

What's my name, sucka? For roller derby, that is. I need help picking the best Roller Derby name for me. It must be unique, which is to say, not found on this list or too similar to anything that is. There's already a Victoria Deck 'Em, and a girl can't get Kicktoria Deck 'Em. Too similar. Dig?

My given name's Amber, so anything clever, sexy, merciless or badass riffing on Amber or preferably Ambrosia is where it's at, or anything just AWESOME. I also like Professor Pain /Doctor DETH sorts of names, since I'm kinda academicky.

The only other things about me I can conceive of that could possibly be incorporated into this are that I'm big, blonde, have dimples, and am a dommey deviant of the first order.

My parents named me after a song called "Tahiti Tiare". I've been looking for copies of this song for a while and cannot find it. Can anyone help? I don't know the artist or the tune; I may have heard it only once in my life. It may not actually be "Tahiti Tiare" exactly but that phrase is important.

I'm not particular about the format of the song - vinyl, CD, MP3, whatever. I would just like a copy to share with my family. Thank you.

Help me think of ways to think of a name for my new blog! I have a long-running blog on a specific topic that I'm about to abandon for a new blog that's going to focus on more general media and cultural criticism, but I can't think of a name! I'm not so much looking for someone to come up with a name as to suggest ways of going about thinking of one, or to clue me in to naming trends that I may not realize are cliches. Here's what I've decided so far:

The ist/ism school of blog naming is played out.
I like titles that are phrases or sentences.
I have a weakness for made up/compound words (I liked "quantrarian" before I found out it was the name of a company) but I realize that they can sound pretentious and be hard to remember.

Best practices for computer names on a large network?

I need to come up with a conventional naming scheme for 200+ computers in my organization. Help! I came on board with my organization almost six months ago. When I first arrived, there was no standardized way to name computers. They vary from things that slightly make sense to things that make no sense at all. Now IT has decided to set forth a conventional naming system for at least all the workstations on our network, and we're kind of butting heads over what it should be.

We had actually decided on a convention about a month ago and began using it, but it quickly became cumbersome and we ran into some issues. The convention we were using is as follows:

aaabyyyz-xxxxxx
* aaa = three-letter code for the computer's location
* b = floor number of the location
* yyy = three-letter code indicating the OS of the computer
* z = version number of the OS
* xxxxxx = primary user's last name and first initial

So, for example, my computer under this system is named fpp1osx5-hollowayj. As you can imagine, we ran into issues on the Windows boxes with the machines and therefore our inventorying software truncating the NetBIOS names to 15 characters.

Some things we have considered are locations, floors, departments, OS information, user information, etc. We don't know what's best to include and what's most useful to us or even our end users. I know you don't work where I do so you can't come up with the perfect system for us, but I'd love to know what has worked for you in the past.

Whats that song? In an advertisement featuring the Concorde, showing it taking off (in slow motion with heat fumes rising in the foreground), the ad played in the early 1990s, and the song went "(something) (something) with Jesus... the great (something) in the sky" and there was cowbell. The list of popular baby names for 2007 was released, and I was surprised to see all sorts of girls names I never heard growing up in the 80s- Madison, Ava, Isabella. Where do popular baby names come from? Also, it appears there is little crossover between the top ten girl's names in 2007 and 1987- only one girls name, Elizabeth, is on both lists. Meanwhile, the boys lists have a six names that appear on both. Are girls names and boys names influenced by different factors?

pronunciationfilter: how do i mitigate the awkwardness of correcting someone who is pronouncing my name wrong after a significant amount of time has already passed? so i've been dating this guy for about a month and a half. the first several times i heard him say my name, he put the accent on the wrong syllable (it's an unusual name but not hard to pronounce). usually when i first meet someone and they haven't heard my name or ask how to pronounce it, i will say, "it rhymes with —" and it's no problem. i thought i had this conversation with him when we first met, but then i heard him mispronounce it a few times thereafter. i thought i could correct this without outright pointing out to him that he was mispronouncing it by saying my name when leaving him voicemails or when he'd hear me telling others how to say it when asked (he even pointed out how one hostess at a restaurant was having such problems even after i repeated it to her several times). i haven't heard him say my name very often (we both answer our phone calls with, "hey…!") and thought he'd gotten it but yesterday he said my name again, and again, he pronounced it wrong.

what do i do here?! am i going to have to awkwardly point out to him that he's been saying my name wrong all this time, and particularly considering how much time we've spent together? or is there some other way i can do this with much less awkwardness?

I noticed a well known food related domain name is available. What's the deal if I register it? I don't mean to squat on the domain. I'm a huge fan of the product, and to see it's domain neglected breaks my heart. Could I make a tribute site? Could I put ads? Would I have to use it for something completely unrelated? What happens when the company who owns the brand notices? Can they just take it from me? Do things change if I also buy a popular way of misspelling the product name?

Some more details: I'm in Canada, but so is the corporation that makes the product in question, if that helps/hurts. I should also clarify that it's possible that the exact brand name is not the name of the domain, but the name and product are clearly featured in the domain.

It's name my puppy time! I brought home this little guy yesterday. He's a french bulldog pup, and although I've been calling him either Chauncey or Baxter, neither of the two seem to really fit.

My initial reaction was to give him some sort of title, like "Sir" or "Lord" and then a name, but I don't know anymore. He's snuggly and funny and wiggly and he snores like an old man. I love him...what should I call him?

Because this question just doesn't get asked enough: please help me remember this book I enjoyed as a child in the early 1970s. In it, 3 boys are at the beach. They find at least one (maybe more) message in a bottle, and I think the message is in some sort of code. Is it OK for a family name (Firstname Middlename Lastname II, III, IV, etc.) to skip generations? Let's say my husband's name is Robert John Smith and his grandfather's name is Mark Joseph Smith. If Robert John Smith and I have kids, could I name my son Mark Joseph Smith II?
