Hand gurus of MeFi, help me. My nails are disgusting. Soft, peeling, split, easily prone to breaking. They didn't used to be like this, and I miss my old, healthy nails. What to do?

I was born with awful nails that are super thin and break off halfway down the nailbed. It's incredibly painful, annoying, and unattractive. I'm thinking about getting them overlaid with acrylic or gel (possibly with very short tips added) at a fancy spa so that I can finally have normal-length nails that are functional, painless, and not hideous. Is this going to fix my problem? Am I going to regret this decision?

I've seen the
Nano Nails product that is supposed to turn your fingernails into a capacative stylus. I like this idea, but they aren't out yet, and anyway I want to do my nails myself! What can I use that's lightweight to attach to my fingernail so that it conducts enough electricity to operate an iPod Touch?

I'm looking for a part-time nail technician program in NYC to learn more about doing manicures and pedicures. I don't know yet if I want to give it all up and become a nail tech, so advice/good things to know/don't do it types of feedback is welcome as well.

How can I pamper my feet? Years of hiking, dancing, running, and a general dislike of socks have turned my feet into a disaster area. Dry, flaky patches, huge callouses, cracked nails, a planar wart. Nothing super-painful, just kinda gross. Short of going to a Podiatrist, what can I do so I can show my feet in public?

CatFilter: In an AskMe thread a while back, I saw the
Klaw Kontrol bag described as a good way to control your cat for various necessary procedures. Our usually
sweet-tempered girl cat has taken to randomly destroying things while we're not here, and we want to install
these things as an alternative to declawing (which we will not do). Anyone have any experience with these, or other "Kitty Stop It" aids?

FungusFilter:
I have nail fungus on one foot. It hasn't been a problem until now. However, I've started taking ballet classes, and after class, the big toe (with the fungus) hurts like a mofo under the nail. (It's not due to ill-fitting ballet slippers, I checked that with the teacher, and we're not doing pointework, so it's not that either.) This is annoying, and I'd like to get rid of it. (I also don't want to drop the ballet classes.)
Is there any homeopathic/OTC stuff that'll work on nail fungus, or is this a situation that's best handled by a doctor? Anyone have experience with this? I occasionally get Athlete's foot on that same foot, but I've been diligent about making sure it's kept at bay with foot cream. Many thanks!
