Dear The Internets: I have had this shiny odd-shaped thing on my desk for over a decade now. People often ask me what it is. I have no answer. No one else has been able to figure it out either. Can you help me? Sincerely, frogs. [more inside]
My dad found this wooden object at a market. He's quite delighted with it, and wants to know what it is. It was labeled a "treen" - which the internet tells me is a "generic name for small handmade functional household objects made of wood"- so I presume the seller didn't know what it was either. Our best guess is that it's a tool for crushing/flattening/pounding something (cracking nuts?) - but we'd love a more definitive answer. Any ideas? [more inside]
What are these bottle things? My mother bought them in Hyderabad, south India, in the 1970s. I guess the writing is probably Urdu. She thinks that the bottles are made from camel stomachs [?] and that they originally contained perfume essences.
My toddler has a set of animal magnets that include a snail, a cow, a beaver/woodchuck thing, a sheep, another sheep, a goat, and... a purple blobby thing. What the hell kind of animal is this? [more inside]
What is this mystery object? A friend found it at her parents' house. Nobody knows what it is. [more inside]
What is this mystery object? It's a metal spike-thing, about 8" long and 1" in diameter, hollow, with a perforated drillbit-looking tip and a flared, mushroom cap-shaped top. My son found it during a family walk near some (active) railroad tracks near our ancestral home in southern New Jersey. Our retired engineer father said, "It appears to be... a nozzle of some sort?" There was a spider living inside of it; he has since been evicted. Thanks, Hivemind!
My father recently acquired this item at a second-hand store in Maryland. He's trying to identify it. Can anyone shed some light on the situation? [more inside]
My brother in law just bought a house and this was left behind in the cellar. Does anyone know what it is? It's wooden. The checkered bit along the shaft is some kind of woven grass. We're in Australia so possibly Aboriginal. Thanks.
This object was amongst tools belonging to a carpenter/furniture restorer, so may be something to do with that trade. Beer bottle cap for size, ~5 inches total length; good condition, but must be at least 20 years old - could be much older. The metal part appears to be aluminium, which would be too soft for many tool uses, so perhaps it is something else entirely?
I found this (2, 3) in a box of office supplies manufactured in Brooklyn in the mid-late 1940s. It appears to be a component of something, but I have no idea what - does anyone recognize it?
My sister found this at a friend's house; she wants to know what it is. If I had to guess, I'd say it's part of a breast pump (with a little milking stool inside), but that seems ridiculous. Anyone else?
This recent question reminded me of my own "what the heck is this?" question that I've been wondering about... I was walking to grab lunch one day, and walked past this fenced-in box on Madison Ave between 47th and 48th St. What the heck is it? [more inside]
What is this thing my cat brought to my porch? http://i.imgur.com/cejZcGe.jpg It appears to be something between an animal fetus and organ. When I turned it over it looked the same on the other side. There were no visible eyes/mouth/features. It was larger than a quarter and there was no blood present. A possum visits regularly, and the area has many moles, birds, and raccoons.
Hi, all. This should be fairly short, so here goes: While suffering through the Influenza of 2013, I ended up watching a ton of episodes of Danger Man on DVD, only to become entranced with this particular object, which I've made a screenshot of. [more inside]

What is this thing, where did it come from, and is my house going to burn down now that Turtle (left) has repurposed it as a cat toy? [more inside]
What is this? Spotted in a Goodwill, with no documentation or package. The smushed-ball thing is metal, and the cable is very flexible. The base is plastic.
My friend brought me this terra cotta rattle/ball back from Japan. What is it? Japanese instructions included! [more inside]
