This weekend, IKEA is offering a food special where the price of your meal is deducted from furniture orders of $100 or more. In the fine print, I noticed an unusual clause: "Swedish meatballs not included in restaurant offer at IKEA Carson." Everyone loves Ikea's Swedish meatballs, but is the meatball market really THAT much more robust in Carson, CA? What's the deal?

In 2010, the granddaughter of Marthe de Florian died at age 91. An apartment she had kept locked in Paris since 1940 was finally opened and among the items found in the apartment was a gorgeous painting of her grandmother by italian artist Giovanni Boldini. Every article about the discovery focuses on Marthe & Giovanni and the painting. My friends and I are far more interested in the granddaughter... Can you help us find details? [more inside]
Book search: looking to find the title/author of a mystery set in Venice. Likely NOT Donna Leon, the mystery features a married British couple in Venice on vacation. Plot elements may include a suitcase of books, a murder that takes place at a film festival or fashion show. The couple become involved in solving the case. Published in the last decade, perhaps. Thanks!
Help my identify a band I heard earlier this year! Two Scottish girls that sound like two PJ Harveys... [more inside]
Yesterday evening I was looking at the sky and noticed a star like object flying across the sky. As I watched I noticed there were 5 or so more... and then a moment later even more, perhaps 9 or 10, moving at the same speed across the sky, South to North, at a rather slow pace, yet I got the impression they were very high up so in actual fact moving at some speed. I called out to the wife to see them and she saw them also. So I guess the question is, what objects flying across the sky may look like stars moving? I thought satellites but never thought they flew in clusters like that. [more inside]

My friend wants me to try to recreate this painting as a decoration for her wedding. The problem is that neither of us have any idea who the artist is/where the image came from. Can you help? Also, it would help me out immensely if I had access to a higher quality image to work from.

Help me identify a book I read in the mid-90's! All I remember about it is that it was a crime novel, about a guy on death row, and the big surprise at the end of the book is that he and his lawyer (an ostensibly straight married man) wind up having some kind of sexual encounter before the client is executed. At least I think that is what happened - I could be making up some of the details. But hopefully this is enough to go on - thanks, book sleuths!
I read a mystery around 1980 that I'd like to find again. Our hero, a professor on sabbatical, goes to Spain and meets an old college friend for dinner. The friend asks a favor along the lines of, "If anything happens to me, please bring this item to the American Embassy," or something like that. He hands something to our hero, and, of course, the friend is murdered before the meal is finished. Our hero is on the run. So, Mefites, any ideas?

San Francisco Bay Area (and CA) - can you think of any mysterious, or interesting or secret places? Legends/myths? I'm interested in fiction books reminiscent of The Wicker Man and Harvest Home. Horror or mystery stories of strange nature cults/paganism/mystery religions...Not so much stories of Da Vince Code or Name of the Rose but more the former two titles.

Extremely vague song description: I heard a woman playing acoustic guitar in Boston at South Station tonight. She was playing a fairly famous song from the 60's or 70's. The song is sung by a male with a deep scratchy voice, like hungover whiskey voice. He is singing powerfully and it is a powerful song. Not a happy song. It's a singer's song, not so much about the music. The song is definitely famous enough, but not something you would regularly hear, or hear at all on a classic rock radio station. I picture the man singing it to have a lot of facial hair. The lyrics may contain the word 'fire' or they may not.

I know everybody asks this (and I've read through the previous questions looking for recommendations), but what should I watch next? Preferably on Netflix or Hulu Plus (not web only). In general, I tend to like: mysteries/crime procedurals/law dramas, especially with a quirky twist, and also shows involving a quirky band of misfits (or individual) working outside the law to bring justice to the little people while finding out who done them wrong (e.g. the A-Team, Burn Notice, The Pretender, etc.) I also like heist shows and sci-fi. And occasionally anime. [more inside]

I am desperately trying to remember a song from a mix-tape around 1996 that involved a male singing in a quiet, resigned, almost-verging-on-happy-about-giving-up tone about how he was going to just stay inside and live his do-nothing life in his crappy run-down home and drink tea with a dormouse. Something to that effect. Minimalist sound, kind of plinky and plonky. [more inside]

Silly question, surely it's easily answerable but I'm on a computer with no sound and have too much work to do to spend much time looking, so I turn to AskMe in hopes of settling an office disagreement before the workday is over. The classic musical phrase which describes "mystery," "detective," etc. I think it's from a TV show. Tip of my tongue, but I'm drawing a complete blank. It goes, "Duuuuum da-dum dum / Duuuuum da-dum dum dummmmmm...." Notes are: 1, flat-2, flat-3, 1 / 1, flat-2, flat-3, 1, X. Boss says X is a perfect fifth. I say it's a flat-5 Who is correct? And what the heck is it from? Thanks AskMe.
