Name That Novel!

I read a mystery around 1980 that I'd like to find again. Our hero, a professor on sabbatical, goes to Spain and meets an old college friend for dinner. The friend asks a favor along the lines of, "If anything happens to me, please bring this item to the American Embassy," or something like that. He hands something to our hero, and, of course, the friend is murdered before the meal is finished. Our hero is on the run. So, Mefites, any ideas?

Mythical and mysterious places of the Bay Area (and CA)?

San Francisco Bay Area (and CA) - can you think of any mysterious, or interesting or secret places? Legends/myths? Strange rewards for a bit of driving, or walking, or an ExpeditionTM of Discovery, etc? Difficulty: not looking for woo, or establishments of commerce, no-matter how good hole-in-the-wall-food may be :) Examples inside... [more inside]

Mystery bugs

A few months ago, I began noticing tiny bugs in my place. They appear very sporadic - I may see one or two a week at best - but it's always the same kind. I'd like to see no bugs in my place at all, ideally. [more inside]

Books like The Wicker Man and Harvest Home

I'm interested in fiction books reminiscent of The Wicker Man and Harvest Home. Horror or mystery stories of strange nature cults/paganism/mystery religions...Not so much stories of Da Vince Code or Name of the Rose but more the former two titles.

What is this song?

Extremely vague song description: I heard a woman playing acoustic guitar in Boston at South Station tonight. She was playing a fairly famous song from the 60's or 70's. The song is sung by a male with a deep scratchy voice, like hungover whiskey voice. He is singing powerfully and it is a powerful song. Not a happy song. It's a singer's song, not so much about the music. The song is definitely famous enough, but not something you would regularly hear, or hear at all on a classic rock radio station. I picture the man singing it to have a lot of facial hair. The lyrics may contain the word 'fire' or they may not.

Entertain Me!

I know everybody asks this (and I've read through the previous questions looking for recommendations), but what should I watch next? Preferably on Netflix or Hulu Plus (not web only). In general, I tend to like: mysteries/crime procedurals/law dramas, especially with a quirky twist, and also shows involving a quirky band of misfits (or individual) working outside the law to bring justice to the little people while finding out who done them wrong (e.g. the A-Team, Burn Notice, The Pretender, etc.) I also like heist shows and sci-fi. And occasionally anime. [more inside]

yum, drinking tea with a dormouse

I am desperately trying to remember a song from a mix-tape around 1996 that involved a male singing in a quiet, resigned, almost-verging-on-happy-about-giving-up tone about how he was going to just stay inside and live his do-nothing life in his crappy run-down home and drink tea with a dormouse. Something to that effect. Minimalist sound, kind of plinky and plonky. [more inside]

It's a mystery...

Silly question, surely it's easily answerable but I'm on a computer with no sound and have too much work to do to spend much time looking, so I turn to AskMe in hopes of settling an office disagreement before the workday is over. The classic musical phrase which describes "mystery," "detective," etc. I think it's from a TV show. Tip of my tongue, but I'm drawing a complete blank. It goes, "Duuuuum da-dum dum / Duuuuum da-dum dum dummmmmm...." Notes are: 1, flat-2, flat-3, 1 / 1, flat-2, flat-3, 1, X. Boss says X is a perfect fifth. I say it's a flat-5 Who is correct? And what the heck is it from? Thanks AskMe.

Small Mystery Critter in Our House...Help!

We have an unknown critter nibbling the fruit and tomatoes on a counter INSIDE our house (in Miami, Fl). It's hungry enough to eat most of the bait on a mouse trap (say, leaving only the skin on a small slice of pear, as it seems to like fruit), strong enough to somehow move what's left of the bait about 1.5 inches away from the trap, but agile/light enough to not be caught by the trap. No vermin poop nearby that I can see. Ideas what it could be and how to get rid of it? [more inside]

Mystery Plant?

A friend sent this picture of a strange plant that he is trying to identify. He found it growing at his campsite almost underneath a tent that he had left up. He has asked a lot of people if they know what it is and no one has identified it yet. The closest anyone has come up with is that it might possibly belong to the same family..Monotropaceae.. as Indian Pipe. He said that it grew in relative darkness under the edge of the tent, probably had next to no water, and sprouted during the heat of August. The location is near Julian, CA about an hour's drive from San Diego, and the tent site is in a tree-shaded canyon high in the Cuyamaca Mountians at 4000 ft. Any ideas?
