More smart thrillers like Brilliance and Lexicon

I've recently finished Marcus Sakey's Brilliance and Max Barry's Lexicon and I'd like more thrillers like them. By "like them", I mean: fast paced, lots of twists and action, an intelligent, speculative, science-fictiony central idea, but the book is not marketed as genre science fiction, but rather as a thriller. Some literary aspiration is a plus, as is a good Bechdel test score (both of the above books kind of failed on that latter criterion). Already read: Atwood, Gibson, Stephenson. I read a lot of "literary mysteries" like Tana French and the like, but here I'm more interested in action/thrillers and not so much mysteries or procedurals.

Troubled small town cop uncovers a big secret: examples?

Looking for examples of this trope: low key but doggedly determined cop in a small/medium sized town. Personal problems. A close-knit community. A series of murders that ultimately point to a much bigger story than anyone expected. His personal life unravels and ravels as he investigates, treading on eggshells as he goes. Emphasis much less on the procedural aspects than the emotional. Genre thriller as opposed to mystery (ie the cop protagonist is in personal jeopardy). [more inside]

Bring me to the edge of my seat, and then push me over!

What's the most exciting novel you've ever read? I mean this in the simplest sense: an exciting plot. I'm looking for page-turners. Novels that keep you on the edge of your seat and refuse to let you sleep until you finish them. I'm looking for genre novels -- but I don't care what genres: Mystery, thriller, sci-fi, etc. (though sci-fi/fantasy has been done-to-death here, so I'm really more interested in other genres.) Oh, I care about words. So no matter how exciting, I'll quit reading if the prose is crappy. [more inside]
