Once on youtube, always on youtube?

How to remove a video featuring myself from Youtube or Myspace. Put otherwise: do I have any rights to this? I emailed Myspace to remove a video that profiles me and that was used for marketing for a college I used to work for. Their bot promptly responded with requests for information re: copyright. I did not create this video, but as far as I know, I did not sign away any rights to it (at the time, I cooperated with the making of this rather cheesy, now embarrasing work). Am I just going to have to live with this? I would link to the video in question, but I rather far too google-able as it is right now....

Is there a software command center for social networking sites?

Hey all,

Just a quick question, here. Currently I am trying to manage a number of blog-esque sites, i.e. MySpace, Face book, Word press, and of course Metafilter. I was wondering if anyone knew of programs to help maximize my productivity when updating these.

For example, I often post new songs I have created. Is there any program that would allow me to post an update across all my pages from one central hub? How about managing my messages from these sites? Any way to manage those in my regular email, or is there a program that could unify these?

Basically I'm wondering if there is some type of "command station" program to help manage multiple sites like this one.

Thanks in advance for any help! Hope you all had a great weekend.

Breakups SUCK

Is there a way to block a specific page only in Safari (Mac)? My friend recently went through a bad breakup and is having trouble not viewing her ex's myspace profile. I know it's possible to block ALL of Myspace, but is there a way to block JUST HIS profile? so that if she goes to look at it, it stops her from seeing it?

Get off my lawn: Chapter 6,000,000

Help me get some understanding of social media/corporate/marketing relationships. I have no Twitter account, no Facebook account, and I need a better understanding of social media goals in general as it is something I'd need to do as part of a larger job. (Yes, I'll get both accounts.)

Specific questions:

Are there any studies done on the effectiveness of corporations having a presence on Facebook/Twitter? (Hereafter referred to as F/T).

Is the basic idea, that Dove soap has to have a Facebook page because Palmolive does -- they're just following the customers, trying to stay in their lives and looking to compensate for the reduced face time their ads get, now that we're TiVo-ing (etc). and ignoring them?

Does anyone have hard data (or even soft data) on the demographics of these sites? It seems like a surprising number of people in their thirties and forties are on these sites -- are these people essentially sharing internet space with their kids, or are their kids already on to the next F/T?

Have you ever gone to a corporate F/T page, and if so, seriously, why? What were the circumstances? (I always thought it was a profoundly stupid notion that anyone would voluntarily give corporations another inroads into their lives, and yet, yesterday I ordered two pairs of shoes from Zappos and wound up on their Facebook page, just from poking around their site. But I really like Zappos. Do people like Dove soap so much they're going to the Dove soap Facebook page? How does that even happen?

Can you give me any additional insight into how these sites deepen consumer relationships, whether they do it at all?

I promise not to do anything douche-y with this knowledge, ie. I'm not asking these questions so I can start a Comcast Twitter feed or some grossness.

So I basically just want to give out some of my music for free online. What's the best way? Most of my friends are on facebook but it seems like myspace is more suited to this sort of thing. Is there another website I should use? I basically just want to upload mp3s and have people be able to download them. If myspace is the way to go, can anyone recommend some super clean and simple layouts? I really just want a little text and the mp3s for download. Also, is there a limit to how many songs you can put for download on your myspace?

Why can't I see some pictures on Myspace? I've uploaded a couple photos to Myspace, and I can't see them. They're simply empty boxes, not even shaped to the photo or anything.

Blog Archaeology!

Would anyone be able to help me uncover remnants of a 1999 era blog called Evol Star or something to that effect? Details inside. The blog was before the height of LiveJournal and MySpace, and it was run by two girls who may or may not have lived in Texas. I always assumed they were roommates. There interests seemed to drift between the Gorillaz, Noam Chomsky, design, and, again, maybe Texas. The girls were hip and featured quite a few photos of themselves and their flat on the website.

There were quite a few introspective, twentysomething styled posts about adult life and that sort of thing, and I, much younger at the that, always thought their blog was the coolest thing out there. Any chance anyone knows what happened to these women?

Google, the Wayback Machine, and MySpace have failed me. My Google-Fu is decent enough, and I would think, given the content that I remember, that these two would have kept on with their internet lives.

How to mass email someone's friends on MySpace?

MySpace question (which, forgive me, is probably easy to answer but I'm in a bit of a crisis): is there a way to send a message to ALL of one user's friends OR can you suggest a way to quickly contact many users about a funeral/memorial service? Sorry if this is a dumb question but i don't have the time or resources to research right now.

My friend's boyfriend killed himself this week, his memorial is TOMORROW, and I'm trying to pitch in to reach whoever I can to tell them. It's been hard b/c my friend doesn't know all this guy's pals, doesn't have his cell phone to call them, and is kind of desperate to get people to the service on short notice.

Is there any way to mass email people on MySpace, from the dead guy's list of friends for example?

Or, do you have any other good ideas?

Thanks so much.

Facebook: the new cure for forgetfulness

How can I use Facebook/Bebo/Myspace to remind myself to do various tasks, via my mobile phone? My mobile phone provider is giving me free WAP access to Myspace, Bebo and Facebook, but charging me for the rest of the WAP internet. I used to use Gmail's mobile interface to email myself reminders ("take the chicken out of the freezer", etc) as I went about my day, but it's now costing me money to use that service.

So, I'm looking for a way to set up an account with one of the above websites that will allow me to either a] email myself reminders, or b] subscribe to an RSS feed of stuff I've posted during the day, that my feed reader will pick up for me automatically.

In an ideal world, I'll be able to turn my computer on when I get in from work, and have an automatic visual reminder appear that tells me to get the chicken and stick it in the fridge. I used to get this using Gmail and Thunderbird, but it now costs me extra to do that. The fact that this is automatic is very important (my feed reader and Thunderbird are always running), because if I have to visit a website, I'll forget.

I get the feeling that this (or something like this) has already been done, but I can't find it when I Google.

In summation: I post a message to Facebook/Myspace/Bebo. I get home, and get reminded of that message automatically. How?

I'm looking for musicians who've decided not to be on MySpace Music (because they don't want to provide free content/traffic for News Corp., because they don't want their work next to ads, or for other reasons related to MySpace). Where are statements, blog posts, etc., by such musicians? Your own thoughts on these issues are welcome too.

Need a MySpace plugin

Looking for a MySpace program similar to Comment Laser. We purchased it but ended up getting a refund because it was buggy. Anyone know of any other programs similar to it? We are trying to find a software that would allow us to send targeted messages to fans in cities where our band will be playing. The ability to parse out names from our friend list based on zip code and/or city is most important. Open to any ideas or software. Thanks!

Is it MySpace Voodoo?

How can I pull the data from a MySpace profile to include in flash or other custom layouts? One of the coolest things about LoveMyFlash is that their layouts automagically pull the data a user has entered in to their "About Me," "Who I'd Like to Meet," interest lists, etc.

How do they do it?

Obviously they're isolating each "blurb" and pulling it in to the swf. I could do the "pulling it in to the swf" part... if I knew *where* to get the blurbs. That's the part I just can't seem to figure out.

Is there a way to make a database query directly? This seems like a big security hole... but then again it's MySpace we're talking about here...

Is there a way to go to each blurb or section as an individual HTML page? That seems like the most direct route.

Or are they using some regex voodoo in the Flash script to seek out the words "About Me" then include everything until the "Who I'd Like to Meet." This seems like it would be doable... but complicated... especially since regex is not my strong suit... nor are the black arts.

Anyone have any clues?

Freakonomics and MySpace abductions.

I live in Vermont. I work in a small town that has been directly affected by the recent Brooke Bennett tragedy (family involved 12 year old in sex ring and killed her, attempted to blame it on a MySpace predator) in an industry that is directly related to dealing with the aftermath.
I am also reading Freakonomics, which amongst other things has persuaded me to look past media hype and compare numbers to actual relevant data. I have two questions 1. How many children a year are kidnapped/abducted that can be directly attributed to social networking sites online vs other baseline statistics (how many children's parents kidnap them, how many children are killed due to negligence such as not belting kids in).

2. (Completely hypothetical) Given say a $500,000 grant to promote child safety, where would the money most be effective in comparative ranking to "ZOMG MYSPACE" alerts and education.

Are online predators really any statistical danger, or just an easy and new headline.

How to find local people with similar interests on MySpace?

I'm probably not using it for its intended purpose, but is there any way to actually search for LOCAL people, with similar interests, on MySpace? Their "search by interests" feature is a good start, but unfortunately if I put something in there like "nude basket weaving" it'll give me a list of people all around the world...I don't have the option to limit the search to people I'll actually have a chance to meet in this lifetime.

Conversely, I can do a people search for local people, but I can't filter them by interests.

I tried using Google to search for "watching CSPAN drunk AND atlanta site:myspace.com" but searches like that typically turn up job postings and the like.

Is there something else I can do to find local people with similar interests, or am I missing the point of this whole MySpace thing?

Open Source Social Networking, blah, blah, blah.

Yet Another Social Networking Question: I'm looking for something that does well with different user groups. I'm looking for an open-source or low-cost open platform to build a social networking site on. The dealbreaker that I've yet to see in any of the common ones is a strong "group" functionality.

I'd like to have profiles that are "teams", and profiles that are "fans", with fans having a different set of available functions (which could easily be determined using an ACL-type interface).

Anyone have a lead on something that they know will handle this?

Are there established, respectable Agencies which can help a company market online using "Web 2.0" tactics – like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube, blogs, widgets, etc.? I have a client who wants to market "the right way" (ie, no spam, with a real, human presence). I'm looking for some agencies that might help them execute some of their plans, which include: Running contests on Youtube and Flickr, hiring freelance writers to create a useful, valuable weblog, monitoring twitter and other sites for negative experiences with their brand so they can make the situation right, etc., and creating and distributing useful desktop widgets.

They are very sensitive to how easy it is to do things badly here, and so they want a real expert.

Do you know of any agencies who have particular expertise in any of these areas? My client wants an agency with a respectable track record, and lots of experience.

Posting One Thing to Many Blogs?

What is the best way to share my blogging when I have different friends on myspace, livejournal, blogspot, facebook. etc. I currently have a myspace blog, a livejournal, and a blogspot blog where I triple post my content. I also sometimes will write facebook notes with the same post.

I'm wondering if people have advice about how to streamline this process and have one application do this for me. Either XP or OS X is a possibility. Is there an easy (free?) way to write something once and have it show up everywhere?

Secondly, does anyone have any experience with trying to integrate multiple blog services into one location. Ideally, the people who like to read me on facebook or myspace or livejournal would all just visit a single blogspot blog and make things easy for me, but I'm not sure they actually will (and these are people who don't know what RSS readers are). Checking their livejournal friends page is probably easier than clicking over to my own separate blogspot blog once a week (if they remember), so I want to keep all the readers, I just don't like having to triple post what I write in all those places.

Extracting Data from Myspace and creating a date sorted list of gigs.

How could extract and combine the data from about 40 gig pages on Myspace (like this and this) and end up with a date-sorted list of all of the data? Would it be easy, or quick to do this once a week? The more automated this can be the better. I don't really want an RSS feed but a resultant list like the one below which can be generated when I need it.

1/01/08: The Beatles: The Venue, London
1/01/08: The Verve: La Venue, Paris
Why is my blog heating up?

Why is my MySpace blog suddenly so hot? I've been blogging there for a couple years now, with a few people reading it from time to time. But in the past month or so, I've been ramping up steadily and now I'm getting 200 hits a day. I only have 116 friends!

It's not particularly scintillating reading, mostly just random observations and complaints or whatever, but I do try to keep it kinda funny and at least a little interesting. WTF is going on? Is there a bot hitting it or something? Does everybody who blogs more than once a year get hits on MySpace?

This is so not a troll for further attention. It's just that if people really like reading it, I'd like to take it somewhere where I can get a tiny cut of the ad revenue. Thanks.

moospace

I hate to say anything nice about myspace, but it seems that it is the best source for upcoming tour dates. Conundrum:

Unfortunately, I can't filter bands by location. For instance, for this list of bands, tell me when they're going to be in my city.

Since they're all posted in what looks to be the same format, I'd like to use some service that let's me load all of those tour dates into a database, do some WHERE clauses, and get my own custom show list.

Even better, I'd like someone else to handle all of the heavy lifting and offer this as a service on the web.

Also: this obviously doesn't have to use myspace data, but I trust data from bands or promotors a lot more than a random guy on the internet (see footnote 2)

1) I don't have a myspace account, so if I can do this as a member, I apologize.
2) I'm aware of the user-driven web 2.0 concert content. But it often misses lots of bands, in my experience
How can I tell which of these damn Firefox tabs is making a sound?

How can I tell which of these damn Firefox tabs is making a sound? Every time I open my browser, I default to the previous session, for a sense of continuity between uses; I don't like to feel like I lose track of a thread.

I usually have 10+ tabs open. When I open Firefox, there's generally some YouTube video URL in my prior session, and it will inevitably start playing audio. Same goes for MySpace pages; annoying. And the sound-playing pane is rarely up front, but is hiding behind many peer tabs.

I know to hit mute, but I want to solve another tier of this issue: I wanna be able to SELECT * FROM WINDOWS WHERE sound_playing=1; . In other (english) words,
I'd love to be able to expose all windows that are playing sounds. So I can selectively close them.

I know I can probably set up a way for these sites to not play on load, but a more interesting question is, is it feasible to program a way I could find out which program, and then if it's a multipane program, which tab/pane, is streaming audio out?

My guess is that such a solution would have to be written specifically for a given operating system, and could not be a Firefox extension or cross-platform widget.

What could possibly cause MySpace to kill my internet connection?

What could possibly MySpace to kill my internet connection? Hi all,

Before anything, I fully understand the unfortunate and stupid nature of this problem because it deals with MySpace but I've had this problem for two years and NO ONE seems to know whats wrong with it.

Secondly, I would love to hear anything other than 'lolz, its cos MySpace sucks!' -- Yes, I'm with you on the MySpace hate, but here is my issue.

I have my music on MySpace and I receive between 15-20 new messages/comments per day from fans around the world who take the time to listen to my music so I want to be respectful and respond to all of them. The issue is that whenever I view more than 2-3 profiles/accounts, my internet connection completely dies (I'm unfortunately with bastards from Comcast because Verzion FiOS is not available in my area). Whats really weird about this issue is that only my web browsing works, but mIRC and AIM work just fine.

What could be the cause of this extremely stupid and unbelievably annoying problem? Could some software be causing this problem? I use Firefox and have tested this out on Opera, Flock and IE and the same thing happens. If I simply click on more than 2-3 accounts, internet web browsing connection dies and I am forced to unplug my router (Netgear FVS 114) from the wall, wait 5 minutes and plug it back in again.

I've called Comcast and of course, they never know anything so I wasted time talking to them.

If anyone has any solutions I really would love to hear it, I seriously feel bad not being able to interact with my fans who take time to check out my work and I can't even respond to them without wanting to punch a hole in the wall because of this annoying problem.

I thank you all very much in advance.

How can I get them to leave me alone?

How can I get them to leave me alone? I have the court order. I have moved and rarely leave the house. So how do I get this person to leave me alone? In August I posted about a getting out of a relationship with someone who I suspected suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder.

You can see the post here or by clicking on my other activity - it's the only other post I've made.
The judge awarded me two years of protection and ordered this person to pay my attorney's fees. They are not allowed to contact me directly or indirectly. And I have completely moved on - relocated, focused on my work and my health and a new relationship, and am, for the most part, VERY happy.

However, this person persists on doing whatever they can to "get" me. Their myspace page is always full of unflattering references to me. For a while they were using their profile to count down the days left on the abuse order, blogging about how they were going to move in on my line of work (which is very specialized) to pay off their debt, and listing all the people they thought I had slept with (most names I didn't even recognize).

Now their myspace page is also full of derogatory statements about the new person in my life and my relationship with them. Of course no one is named and it's just vague enough, but anyone who knows about our history is bound to get the reference.

This person continues to harass my friends - via email, in person, or on the phone. But I am never named, so it does not count as indirect contact. On my birthday they tracked down my celebration at a restaurant and left an anonymous card for me with the kitchen staff (who, when asked, gave a positive name ID for the person). However, without subpoenaing everyone involved, it would be hard to prove that it was this person who had left the card.

This weekend I received an email from their ex - or at least it is supposed to be from their ex. I would not put it past this person to fake the address and imitate their ex. The contents of the email were bland but there was just enough to make me wonder.

I have pretty much retreated from the world to avoid any interaction with this person. I rarely go out, and when I do it is to places that they do not frequent, or from where they have been banned. I have deleted any presence on social sites like myspace, and except for my business, I have no online presence at all.

My attorney and my psychiatrist say, "Just ignore him, but if he keeps it up then maybe something could be done." When I talked to law enforcement about this, I was told, "You have a case." But when I went to the station to report the incidents, I was told, "You don't have a case."

Part of me wants to go after this person but I am scared of what will happen. If they're this persistent and nasty after a protection order, how bad would it be if they were jailed?

Part of me feels like I should continue to ignore it. But it makes me sick that my loved ones are being affected.

I am tired of living like a recluse but am nervous about doing anything that's going to incite them. And while none of the things that they've done are huge and terrible, it's like death by a thousand papercuts.

So any thoughts on how to make them stop? Or should I just continue to ignore them and hide?
