I have a friend who wants to watch some new music videos. He has no access to the internet, but I do. Great! I can help out. Except we have very different tastes in music and he only gets as specific as "like Nicki." He also really likes Rihanna and Beyoncé's more beat-driven songs, La Fouine, and a lot of Nigerian popular music. Can you make suggestions for me? Preferably with links, because I'm on strictly metered internet and can't download a lot of videos to find the good ones.

I'm looking for movies that are essentially glorified music videos in the vein of Interstella 5555, Fantasia, or The Wall. Are there any other movies like those?

One of my good friends had very little interaction with pop culture through childhood and most of college, and so missed out entirely on the now-classic music videos that were airing on MTV and VH1 up through the mid-90s. They're interested in improving their music video literacy, so I'd like to put together a playlist for them. Help me make sure I don't miss anything!

I like music videos that feature clever ideas, wittily executed, and I'm hoping to find a music video blog curated by somebody with similar taste. Some of videos I've enjoyed include Her Morning Elegance
, Woke Up New
, Bad M*therF*cker
, and anything by Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry. What blogger (or tweeter) will help me find more videos I love? [more inside]

I've noticed some recurrent patterns in music videos (use of numbers, colors, etc.) that have piqued my interest. I'm wondering if any industry insiders can shed any light or if anyone has explored this concept academically or otherwise. [more inside]

Many music videos from the late nineties, six underground by the sneaker pimps
being the most salient example to me, have a distinctive cinematographic feel and style to them, with very high contrast (super dark blacks and popping-out, almost oversaturated whites); a lot of murky brown/green and pops of red/blue. Does this style have a name? Is it a film effect or some kind of post-processing, or both? digital? Why was it so prevalent in the late-nineties, and, correct me if I am mistaken, mostly just for music videos? [more inside]

Who performed these music videos? Years ago I watched MTV in the early morning when they aired all the zany gainaxy music videos. Three of those stand out in memory for their sheer surreal nexus currency. [more inside]

Music videos are a dime a dozen. However, it's pretty rare for an entire album to be made into a single video with a coherent narrative. What are some examples of this? [more inside]

Seeking urban bonfire imagery in rap videos. Usually the fire is just in the background and/or a crowd is gathered around it, while the rapper does his (usually his) thing. I feel I've seen plenty but am blanking on specific examples. Not thinking of scenes where the rapper is walking away in triumph from some scene of vengeful or simply spectacular explosion, however. (Sorry for horrid pun in title.)

[BitTorrentFilter] I've made a torrent (of an interesting collection of music videos) that I want to distribute. Research about recent reliable trackers led me to use the one
provided by PublicBitTorrent
. But test-launching the torrent file from another computer shows me that no downloading (nor corresponding uploading) occurs. Is it the tracker, or what else might I have done wrong? [more inside]

The Directors Series
is a neat collection of great music videos, ordered by director, but leans heavily towards the 90s. If you were putting together a similar collection of music videos for the 00s what directors and what videos would be essentials for it?

Help me remember a song, out around 1995 or 1996. It was by a rock band with a male singer. Haunting, sort of creepy voice. The thing I most remember was the music video. It featured a girl in her apartment, and a creepy/stalkerish but handsome guy going up the to her apartment. She answered the door, and then it ends up with a slow speed chase up to the roof, where I the music video ends in sort of a cliff hanger. It was a tall apartment building, with an elevator. The male singer was shown on screen in cut ins throughout the music video. I think the singer was shown to be in the elevator, but not interacting with the woman or her stalker.
I can sort of remember one line of lyrics, sort of along the lines:
I only sleep at night, surrounded by my lies.
And for some reason I think the name of the band had the name of elements in it, but that might be totally spurious. Also, I think this was their only song that received much attention. Not much to go on, but who was it?

As I'm limited to one posted question a week, I'm, erm, gonna cheat (but both questions are kinda the same sort of thing):
1) Trying to remember a cartoon from the 50s, that I'm pretty sure was called "Bottles". It had a Disney-Fantasia-esque feel, with the medicine bottles in a shop coming to life on a stormy night, brewing up a potion in a standard cartoony chemical set (bottles and tubes and the like)...
2) Also trying to remember a recent Indie video I saw (OK - I saw it recently) where the screen was split vertically throughout the song, and on each side you had a girl going through her day, doing identical things. The clincher was that one of the girls was going backwards, so when one gets out of bed in the morning, the other one is going to bed at night, but backwards - both clean their teeth together (one out of bed, one before bed, etc). They pass at some point in the middle and end up on the other side of the screen getting to the (identical) end/beginning of their days.
So, either of these things ring a visual bell with anyone?
