How would I pursue a pseudo-career making music for people who need it?

I’m four and a half months through a six-month (two nights a week, two hours a night) course in electronic music production. Prior to that I did a lot of screwing around in GarageBand, and eventually graduated to screwing around in Ableton. My instructor thinks I should consider doing it for real. But... how? [more inside]

Please advise me on a forthcoming computer upgrade

My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

What happened to music recording dates?

Being a fan of music, I've noticed most pop and rock from the 1960s and 1970s often carried a recording date of each song in the liner notes. For instance, Elton John's Tiny Dancer shows a recording date of 9 August 1971. However I almost never see music from 1980 onward carrying any recording dates at all (with a few exceptions such as Prince and Tom Petty's material). Is this information actually printed somewhere in the trade publications, or is it simply not tracked anymore by most studios?

I want to start making electronic music. I'm thinking about buying maybe an MPC type of device but not sure where to start. Novation Launchpad? Maschine? Should I dedicate my album to The Girl or not?

I recorded a solo album, the first recording I've done since the dissolution of my old band after 8 1/2 years. It's a typical breakup album, in the sense that most of the songs are in some way connected to the relationship I had with my ex-girlfriend, the breakup, or my life since. Should I put a dedication in it for her? [more inside]
