GoFundMe is working - how to manage? Tax implications, etc.

A musician friend received a serious cancer diagnosis last week and his network is quickly mobilizing with a bunch of benefit concerts and a GoFundMe for medical expenses that has been doing well. Now that the pool of donations is hitting some real money, the family is trying to prioritize expenses and make sure they're not stepping into a potential tax liability down the road. [more inside]

Why are animals, small children, and musicians drawn to me?

My kids and I were watching Evan Almighty and when the animals started following him, they all burst out, Mom, that's you! It's weird. Dogs that never jump on people jump on me. I've had horses and elephants (at the zoo) start rushing towards me to try and get closer. Children will follow me. I've never been to a small venue concert where the musician didn't make eye contact and try and talk to me after. [more inside]

Famous tribute collaborations where musicians are visibly having fun...

I recently spent an evening in a 'related video' YouTube rabbit hole, starting out with this amazing rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps featuring Prince from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I'm looking for similar performances where you can see the musicians involved truly enjoying themselves, maybe showing off a little bit, and obviously having a really good time while they're doing it. LGBTQ Musicians?

As part of LGBT History Month in October, I am planning a bulletin board of LGBTQ Musicians (music teacher, public K-8 school in Chicago). I already have a good list going (see below), but I'm looking specifically for more women, people of color, and trans* or gender non-conforming folks. I'm also looking for a diverse range of musical styles (classical, jazz, pop, etc), eras, and musical roles (composer, performer, lyricist, etc). Still, I will take any suggestions you have! How can I learn more about traveling musicians in Europe in the 1800's?

A few years ago, before she died, my grandmother told me about her great great grandparents who were traveling musicians in Europe. I don't know how much truth there is to this assertion (we didn't talk about family history very much when she was alive), but I'd like to learn more about this subject. [more inside]

Help a hacking amateur singer out?

I'm singing in the chorus of Handel's Messiah tomorrow at Carnegie Hall, and as luck would have it, I seem to have caught a whale of a cold, which by now has more or less calmed down to just a pretty bad cough. I'd rather not collapse in the middle of the Hallelujah Chorus (or any other choruses, come to think of it). Any advice for dealing with a pretty bad cough in the short term when you can't just take to your bed? [more inside]

Resource for itinerant freelancers?

I often find myself in places where I don't know players in the local pro scene (assuming there is one). For example I have had limited success with sites such as LinkedIn and facebook in trying to find potential chamber music partners in Portland for a sightreading session at short notice. Is there a good website for making connections between like-minded people who enjoy making music for fun at the highest level? If not, is this something that would attract any interest from others, not that many classically-trained musicians necessarily read mefi?

Musicians in "Mixed Marriage"

My music theory professor challenged our class to identify a married couple where one plays the violin and the other the trumpet. His theory is that the personalities of violin and trumpet players clash. Can anyone name a prominent musical couple where one plays a bowed instrument and the other brass? I would imagine that a saxophone player or drummer would be equally incompatible with a string player.
