Singer-songwriter from the 1980s

A friend asked this question on Facebook just now, so I'm passing it on: Any clue who this is? Singer-songwriter. Came on the scene in the mid-eighties. A New Yorker. Titillated journalists dwelt on the fact that she left home at thirteen to move in with some African musicians, with her parents’ okay. Wrote a song about a dream in which she made love with her mother.

Hearing Protection for Musicians, or, It's Too Loud and I'm Too Old

I am a bass player, and I have recently returned to playing loud, noisy rock and roll after a 4-year hiatus from the stage. I have always eschewed earplugs on stage, on the grounds that they keep me from hearing all of the nuance I need to hear to play effectively with a group. But I ain't no spring chicken anymore, and now I recognize that the real reason I never wore earplugs before, even in mind-bendingly loud bands, was mostly out of misplaced machismo. I can tell that I have lost some hearing over the years, especially in the ear that usually faces the drums, and I want to avoid losing more. I have tried using cheap, disposable foam ear plugs, but I am not satisfied with the sound quality I am getting with them. Are there better ear protection alternatives out there? [more inside]

How does a reclusive musician finally get out there?

"When I grow up, I wanna be a pro bass player"...I've been playing since I was a teenager (I'm 40 now) entirely within the safe confines of my home. For 20 years I've wanted to play with others, but I have yet to do so. [more inside]

How can I make a living as a freelance software developer/musician?

I'm currently doing the 9-5 for a company as a software developer during the week and am a church organist on Sundays (as well as a few other freelance music gigs), but I would like to leave the office behind and become a freelance developer so I can spend more time on music. I've thought about this a lot, but now I want to actually DO it. What steps do I need to take to make this happen? Does anyone have experience being in this type of situation? [more inside]

How much do successful, but not megasuccessful, musicians make?

I'm curious about the real-world economics of being a musician who "made it" but is not, say, Sir Elton John or Bruce Springsteen or Jay-Z. For instance, how's James McNew, bassist of the incomparable Yo La Tengo, doing? Is Ken Bethea, guitarist for the Old 97's, comfortable? Ian Matthews, drummer for Kasabian, are you sorted for a comfortable retirement? [more inside]

To live outside the law you must be honest...but must you be poor?

How much does a member of Bob Dylan's (or any other big musician's) touring band get paid? Are they likely paid per show, or some other arrangement? Would they receive lodging and per diem in addition to a salary? I assume they'd get stuff from the dressing rooms at the shows, but would they have their own stuff in the tour rider? (Some of those guys have played with him a long time.) (Other touring musician information welcome!)

Interview driving traffic to a website?

I have a two part question. I've just interviewed well known performer who has just released his first solo CD. He owns all of the rights to the lyrics and music, and his own company published the CD. A radio station I'm associated with plans to put the interview online, as well as broadcast it within the week. If the musician is OK with me putting it on my own website, how might it drive traffic to his site and my site? And is there anything extra I can to make it attract listeners and drive that traffic? Looking for a French singer from the 90s (long shot, I know)

I was in Paris in April of '96 and kept hearing her song everywhere but never got a chance to pick up the album, which I assume had just been released. It's a solo artist (I'm pretty sure), slow, acoustic guitar, and the video had her sitting in an empty derelict apartment while people peered in through the peephole. I've tried everything I could to find it but gave up until I discovered Mefi. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear from you. [more inside]

Getting a celebrity to help our nonprofit?

How do we get a (music) celebrity to help promote an event in a YouTube-type video? Our community nonprofit is having a month-long event in June, and my daydream is to get some (recognizable) musician/band in a video that we could post on our very popular Facebook page. Ideally, he/she would say something like, "If I weren't on tour in [wherever] right now, I'd definitely be at [event name]! Don't miss it!" How do I even attempt this? I'm in a medium-sized city on the East Coast.

Sing It Slant

I am curious about karaoke musicians. What I mean by that is that I have noticed that a lot of karaoke music are re-creations of the original recordings. I am interested in the business, process, and culture of the musicians who re-create that music. We often get articles from reporters "embedded" in the entourage of a popular touring band - I was hoping that someone might recommend a feature article or book about the lives of these *ahem* unsung musicians. Thanks!
