What is the bit of classical music behind the Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark commercial on TV? I just saw the commercial and heard a snippet of classical music that I've been trying to identify. The ad is specifically for Ghirardelli's Peppermint Bark. Can you name that tune?

Looking for recommendations for recent popular music soundtracks

Does anyone have any recommendations for somewhat recent (post-2000) TV or movie popular music soundtracks (or some other kind of compilation)? I tend to like alternative rock, but I'm open to any genre. I've realized that I've been in a musical rut for the past several years, so I'm looking for a fast way to discover new music and expose myself to some of what I've missed. I've gotten the soundtracks to Scrubs and Garden State, and I've found a lot that I like in them, but I'm also almost finished with them.

So, any recommendations?

Weird movie memory filter: I feel like it was a Disney Channel movie. The premise was a 14ish year old girl wanting to be in a boy's band, so she ended up dressing like a boy and they let her in the band. She was also in an all girl band and it happened that they had to perform on the same day. Chaos ensues, and she is found out in the end... Any help is great.

I'm trying to find a DVD/watchable online version of a documentary I saw probably saw about five years or so ago about the history of the voice in popular music. I think it might have been simply called The Voice, and was probably shown on the BBC or Channel 4 (although I think it was American-made). One episode featured harmony groups like the Four Freshmen and the Beach Boys. With such a generic name, Google is failing to help me find any details on this one. Does anybody know what it was actually called, and where I can see this again?

Looking for the name of a song in a Radio Shack commercial. It's a newer TV commercial that says "The Shack sells more phones than the population of Scandinavia." The song has lyrics that don't sound like English. I wish I had a link but all of my Googling has failed.

Which recording of "Cup of Loneliness" is used at the end of Mad Men season 2 episode 12, "The Mountain King", and where can I get it? Every source says it's "Cup of Loneliness" by George Jones, but none of the Cup of Loneliness recordings I've found — George Jones or otherwise — sound the same. On the episode the version is faster and higher pitched than this version, but the way the lines are sung (particularly "where the way is dark and dim") sound as though it's not simply the original sped up.

I don't have an online clip of the show, but if you've got it at home it's played as episode 2.12 closes to credits.

There are a series of recent Cablevision commercials with a dark haired dude talking in front of a white background - these all end with a really groovy bass line. Is that from a real song, or is it just something they just recorded for the commercial?

Name That Show Used In That Russian Music Video-Filter: I was at a Russian restaurant in L.A yesterday and saw the strangest music video. I got the name of the artist (Something and Federov?) but the video was chopped up clips from what looked like a British TV show. What TV show or movie was being cut up? Details inside. The video contained a man in a broad-stripped Zoot Suit and a man dressed as a Lady Bracknell /Pepperpot type (Think Monty Python) and what seemed to be WW1-era soldiers and generals. There was lots of broad comedy and falling down drunk and the sets where very white and minimal. There was a lot of green smoke. From the video quality I'd say late 70s-early 80s? What the hell did I just watch?

Playing iPod Videos an TV

How do I play videos from my iPod Nano on my Phillips television? My Phillips is a flat screen and has a USB port on the side, which my iPod can dock to. When I connect them, the television even recognizes that an iPod is connected, but doesn't seem to know what to do with it. Any ideas?

Where can I find a comprehensive list of music featured on episodes of BBC's Top Gear? Clarification: I know that you can purchase CD's which are "approved" by Top Gear, i.e. Top Gear Top Anthems etc. However, I usually find myself watching Top Gear and thinking that I love the music that they feature during the show (during the car reviews and challenge bits) but I can never remember the names of the songs so I can download them later.

Is there any place where I can find a list of the music featured in every episode in the similar way that a feature film lists all the music in the end credits? I can't view the credits at the end of episodes because BBC America usually cuts them off.

HighEndAudioAndTVShowFilter: What kind of stereo system (speakers/amp/record player) does Dr. House have in his office? Dr. House has some very interesting looking tall, skinny speakers in his office. Also, his record player is also featured prominently in several episodes.

I am curious as to the makes/models of his audio gear and as to whether this is actually high-end audiophile equipment or if it just fancy looking Sony/Kenwood/consumer-grade gear.

I tried googling this, but of course I get a lot of hits related to the "Speaker of the House".

I'm looking for a recording of Hindustan performed by Moya Ruskin in the Poirot TV series (David Suchet version). In the episode "Murder in the Mews," there is a club scene in which Moya Ruskin performs "Hindustan." It's a really nice old-timey version of the song that I'd like to find. I found out the singer's name from IMDB, but that's all I can find.

As a last resort, should I be able to contact the producer of the show or something and see if there's a recording somewhere? Or was the song more likely performed live for the filming?

If anyone can help me identify a piece of TV music from the early 80s, you all can. When I was a kid, I remember liking very much a piece of music that was either the theme or the bumper for the CBC's sports anthology series Sportsweekend. There's a few seconds of it in this video, beginning at 3:47.

It could be music from a production library, and somebody out there may recognize it. Even better, it may be taken from an actual album or movie soundtrack. I'd sure like to know where I could find the whole thing.

Can someone please explain how to get Synchronization Rights to a Cover Version of a song? Or who would have control of whether you can use a cover version in a film. For example, in say the Life Aquatic parts of the sound track use Seu Jorge cover versions of David Bowie songs (sung in Portuguese).

So who's permission do you need (who do you pay) to use a recording like that in a Film (I assume, TV, DVD, etc are the same)?

Does anyone remember the UK satellite music-and-comedy channel PlayUK? How about the short cartoons of music stars they used to play? Are they still preserved somewhere on the internet? Around 2000 my brothers and I used to watch a lot of PlayUK, which showed music videos, comedy programmes (including Rock Profile) and absurd short cartoon clips of rockstars.

The clips I remember:

- There were at least two of Thom Yorke, doing magic tricks whilst dressed in a clown costume and looking depressed. In one he pulled a giant match from his oversized trousers, set himself on fire and moaned, "I'm on fiiiiiire." In the other he set about making a balloon model of a noose, proclaiming, "It's a noooooose."

- At least one of Badly Drawn Boy, saying, "I'm Badly Drawn Boy. What's under me hat today? It's me home city of Birmingham!"

- At least two of Marilyn Manson, with a horse's head, playing a psychiatrist. In one he gave electric shocks to Craig David every time he referred to himself in the third person while relating the events of his day.

I've searched Google, YouTube etc and have found nothing about the cartoons and only scant mention of PlayUK itself, but I'd love to see them again and persuade people I didn't make them up!

I'm a classical music aficionado but have recently been watching the TV show alias and love the kick-butt music super-hero music featured there. Help me find more? Specifically, I loved Sinead O'Conner's No Man's Woman, Badfinger's Come and Get it, Kryptonite, and some of the great 90's anthems by SmashMouth, U2 and others.

I like listening to those songs to rev me up for big presentations or when jogging, but I'd like to, um, expand my repertoire. Things that make me feel like a super-heroine or a kick-butt spy.

Can you make more suggestions? (Stewie's gf asking)

How do I easily and effortlessly find out DEFINITIVELY if a song is in the Public Domain for free use in a TV show?

Here is an example... My Boss: "We want to use the Can Can song. Our music guy has done a recording for us. Is it in the Public Domain?" Me: "Yes. The composer, J. Offenbach, has been deceased since 1880 and if we are doing our own arrangement we are fine." My Bosses Boss: "About 5 years ago, I tried to clear this song for use in a TV production and discovered that it was NOT in the Public Domain. Elle Vator, can you research this and let us know the answer two months ago?" Okay, so I need a clear and absolutely sure was to prove that we are clear to use specific classical songs, in our show.

As I said in my previous question about photo rights, I am in one of those 'opportunity' jobs, in that I can either succeed in a difficult, no-budget kind of a situation and be a hero to the show I am working on, or fail and be entirely expendable. I would like to be a hero... please help me do so!

When I was trained, I was told that the way to ascertain if a song was usable was to check the Date of Death of the composer(s). If it was more than 50-100 years in the past, we could use it (we're in Canada, but need to take international rules into consideration for international sales). What I do is I find something confirming the composer's DoD, sometimes Wikipedia, which I know is not ideal. I print it off, attach a note and file it in the legal binder where I would normally put a Release.

I then got another note from the legal department that I had to check the arrangement we were using and do the same thing with the Arranger as well.

My current problem is with "Gaiete Parisienne" (a.k.a "The CanCan") by J. Offenbach. This was used in our show before I started and was okayed by the person I was hired to replace. According to the above two qualifications, we are fine. However, a higher-up in production seems to feel that we are not fine.

I am in a position to solve this problem before it starts on 20 other songs.

How do I get a definitive answer and come off as heroic and highly unexpendable to my bosses? Please advise.

Can anyone recommend a quality firm that will help me revise, update, and make my resume the best it can possible be, here in NYC? I am also looking for quality job recruiter or headhunters in NYC as well! I have been with my job for 8.5 years and I am totally burnt out and it is starting to show in my work. I never truly enjoyed what I did, but the money was good, so I pushed through. I have reached the point though, where the money is not a motivator anymore. It is affecting my personal life and I am stressed 24/7. I feel trapped because i have been here for so long, and while searching through some of the job sites out there, it seems like I am not qualified for anything but my current position (print ad sales).

I am on Monster, Career Builder, and Media Bistro currently, and with the exception of MB, the other two sites are filled with Scam jobs.

I have a pretty decent resume, that I feel just needs the once over by a pro who knows what companies look for these days when they scan over the countless amount of resumes they get on a daily basis.

I'd also like to meet with a job recruiter / placement, headhunting service which will maybe allow me to take an aptitude test, so I can see what directions I can branch out into.

I'd prefer to stay within the entertainment / music / tv field, but I am prepared to walk away.

So, I come to you guys for your help in helping me get started....

Legal advice needed for my band!

A Mexican TV station wants legal approval to film a gig of my band. Please give me some advice! I'll be visiting Mexico next year to play a jazz festival with my band. Now a Mexican cultural TV channel has asked for written approval to film our concert.

Although we want to give the approval for both the filming and broadcasting on their channel (publicity!), we want to make sure they will not sell the images and/or sounds in any way or form and we want to be sure that we don't get screwed.

Oddly enough the TV station does not have a standard contract / document for this, they simply asked us for a signed one-pager with a short sentence in which we say it's OK.

What should I put in this letter? Literal phrases or examples and a list of points that should be addressed are much appreciated!

I just received a check from Pump Audio. I submitted my music to them a while back and, apparently, one of my tracks was used in a TV show. Woo-hoo! However, I can't find any information on the show it was used in. The information on the statement is as follows: Usage Description: Yearbook Episode 1998 Air Date: 6/11/2006 Ntwk/Pro: ABC I've Googled, to no avail. I can't even find any reference to a show of that name. Anyone have information or a suggestion of how where to look? Or, super-extra bonus points if you know how I can get a copy of it!

Target Ad Music: Rethinking the Dorm Room

More Ad Music Filter: The new Target ads. There's a new Target ad about rethinking the dorm room. It's got a real poppy song playing; the girl's voice is incredibly cute. The only memorable lyric is "Right before my eyes...changing." AdTunes hasn't figured it out yet (I'm not the OP there, for what it's worth.) Can anyone here identify the song?

Sorry for asking two ad music questions relatively close to each other in my own asking history.
