Looking for good composition software on Mac. No actual recorded tracks- it'd be all Kurzweil PC-88 inputted MIDI. Must-haves include fairly easy ability to just jump in and start composin', a music score notation interface, very realistic quality of the instruments (i.e., that my midi inputted keyboard can still sound like a darn good bass guitar), and decent ability to refine the sound quality. A family friend recently gave my kids a first generation iMac G3 (the bondi blue one). We've got loads of PCs around the house, but this is our first Mac. We also have a Yamaha P-120 digital piano. The kids are away for Spring Break and I'd love to surprise them by connecting the two so they can compose, experiment and generally mess around with music on the computer. The problem? Despite strong geekish tendencies, I know nothing about macs, midi or music. And googling isn't leading to anything particularly helpful for someone who knows zero about this stuff. [more inside]

Is there a (hopefully free) Mac app that will let me draw (and listen to) a waveform? I just switched to a Mac 4 months ago, and I remember there being all sorts of little audio tools that did stuff like this, but now I need one that will allow me to simply draw a waveform. Now, ideally I'd like to paste in graphical or vector shapes (photoshop or illustrator) and use those as the waveforms -this is really what I'm looking for - like a line to waveform ability. Would an oscilloscope-type software be more what I'm looking for, and would that allow me to "dial" between the drawn waveforms? Thanks!

I'm going to be relying on my iMac and the music stored on it for a while. I would like to get a set of speakers so that the computer sounds better. What reasonably-priced powered speakers have folks had success with? I'd rather not get a separate subwoofer. I'd be willing to get a small amp and use my small stereo speakers if all the other options are too crappy. Thanks.

Legitimizing iTunes Library. I have *ahem* a friend. This friend has a reasonably large digital music collection being managed by iTunes on a Mac. He would like to understand the cost of ensuring this collection is 100% legal, having realized that the vast majority of it is not. [more inside]

PCtoMacFilter: Is there an easier (faster) way to get my 37 gigs of music stranded on my PC formatted iPod onto my new Macbook than copying it to a PC with 3rd party software, burning it to dvds, and then ripping the dvds onto the Mac? Apple says "no," but please tell me they are wrong.

I'm a long time mixtape (er CD..) enthusiast and MAc user, and I'd like to take things to the next level by actually doing some real mixing and looping etc in my creations. I've researched a lot of DJ tools (Tracktor, Logic, Mixxx, etc), but I'm not really interested in doing anything live or realtime. Nor do I particularly care to replicate decks. On the other hand, I don't think high-level audio production suites are what I'm looking for either. Overkill. Either way, the costs seem prohibitive in most cases. It boils down to this: I need to be able to beatmatch, crossfade, loop and save to mp3 and then split the resulting track into smaller ones of my choosing. My thoughts so far are to use a BPM counter in Itunes and then try my hand at Audacity. Don't really know how to split mp3s yet... Any alternative ideas or successful set-ups?

All the Woz buzz reminded me of a program I ran on a Mac 128 at school. It was a music authoring toy, that let you build MIDI tunes by dragging notes onto a staff. I had so much fun with that thing! Any idea what it was called?

For some reason my copy of Deltron 3030 [The Instrumentals] CD just will not rip to mp3 without serious artifacts appearing on the mp3 version. The CD plays fine on every stereo I have tried but will not rip on any of the Macs I have here at home. Anyone know where I might obtain a copy of the MP3 version of these songs hopefully for free since I already legally own the album and just want them on my iPod? Or on the other hand, anyone know how I might rip these successfully? [more inside]

My friend had this really neat program on his windows computer that I'd like to have, but I have a mac. It was some kind of player that would show the lyrics of the song and actually scroll them while hilighting the appropriate line. Not quite like karaoke, since the individual words weren't hilighted, just the line, but close. It was pretty neat. He said it was ttplayer, but everything I google on that comes up in Chinese! I'm running the latest version of iTunes and Mac OS X Tiger. Suggestions?

On the PC, I used Easy CD Creator 5 to create CD mixes. I loved the ability to create custom transitions between tracks: cross-fades, fade-ins, gaps, etc. What is the best CD mix-making software for Macintosh? (iTunes is sadly lacking in these sorts of features.) A downloadable shareware app would be great, but I'm willing to consider something like Toast, even though it costs $80. (Is Toast a good product? Will it let me do cross-fades? The reviews make me wary.) I suppose the best option would be some sort of iTunes add-on to let me do cross-fades, etc. Does such a beast exist?

Recently, I've started learning the guitar. Up to now, I've been recording and arranging my compositions on my Mac with GarageBand. However, I'm outgrowing it, so I want to find a new budget ($50 to $200) piece of software to use. I just basically want to do multitrack recording and sequencing of .wav based sound files. Also might want to add some effects to tracks, plus probably other stuff I haven't learnt about yet.

Music software for OSX question: A band of which I am quite fond has posted bootlegs for one of their shows on their Web site, as avi videos. I want to be able to listen to the goodness on my iPod, but I can't find any software that will convert the audio from the avi files to mp3s. VersionTracker and download.com yield various shady, non-working shareware or freeware packages.
