I need some Yule music. With kind of an indie rock feel if possible. Stuff that is a cross between Belle and Sebastian and the sountrack for the Wicker Man with a winter yule theme. This is anon because its for a surprise evening dinner/birthday party. Please suggest any songs/whole albums. Thank you!

I wanna shred you up!

Looking for recommendations of modern indie rock artists that aren't afraid to shred & solo - on the electric guitar, not a Casiotone. I'm a major music fan with tastes all over the board. For the past couple years I've been super heavy in the indie world. Much of what I've been listening to is quite, shall we say, "eclectic", and very experimental. I've noticed that prominent use of the guitar seems to be languishing in such music. It's present, yes, but subdued, scrubbed through a sea of effects, and diluted either into a wash of supplemental melody or a wall of noise. The Moog solo has replaced the guitar solo - and though that isn't a bad thing per se, I want to get back to my roots, so to speak.

I feel like I'm ready to go through an electric guitar rennaissance. I miss the riffs, energy, and lead of yore. Few 90's alt songs were lacking a decent solo, and I really miss that.

So, what can you recommend? I'm NOT looking for "classic" examples of solo-centric bands (classic rock, 90s alt, metal, etc). I've got plenty to choose from there (though, for examples' sake, Pink Floyd fits the bill nicely - really experimental music that employed guitar solos masterfully, yet weren't a silly shredder hair band either).

I'm looking for recent/up & coming bands that aren't afraid to turn the amps to 11 and bust out some righteous solos, or, at the minimum, that use the guitar in a technically impressive fashion, instead of just a yawn-inducing strum box.

Note: I'm not just looking for loud, power-chord-weilding indie bands (Glasvegas, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, etc). I love this stuff too, but I want to hear some riffs, man!

Examples:

The White Stripes (their older, more guitar-centric stuff - Ball & Biscuit, etc)
Apollo Up! (This is pretty much exactly what I'm talking about)
Some B.R.M.C.
Alberta Cross, a little
Eh... can't think of any others at the moment?

Don't feel that it has to be restrained to a certain genre, per se, but I'm not looking for pure metal (Uneath, Skeletonwitch, etc). Like I said, lots of easy choices there. I'm looking for more eclectic, indie-oriented groups that incorporate heavy guitar lead into their music.

Thanks!

97 covers of "book of love": go.

help me make a cool, sweet, smart, fun ipod mix for my wedding! bonus points if you have suggestions for processional/recessional music. we're both in our 30's, creative professionals, with wide-ranging tastes. it's a lunch reception with no dance floor, so we're looking for a nice soundtrack for a lot of drinking and talking and eating. leaning toward lush-and-pretty or spare-and-pretty indie(ish) pop/rock. like a mildly edgier and more diverse version of the "grey's anatomy" soundtrack.

here are some songs i am thinking of contributing to the mix:

"book of love" - mike doughty's version (honestly i could just put "golden delicious" on repeat and be done with it, but it's a wedding, you gotta make the effort)
"in your eyes" - peter gabriel
"as is" - ani difranco
"crazy little thing called love" - queen
"the way i am" - ingrid michaelson
"i want you to be my love" - over the rhine
"first day of my life" - bright eyes
"white trash wedding" - dixie chicks
"all of my days" - alexi murdoch
"all i want is you" - u2
"silver lining" - rilo kiley
"when the day is short" - martha wainwright (slightly inappropriate, but whatever, i like it)

he likes most ska, all those bands that sound like the yeah yeah yeahs, and white stripes, but there's not a lot there that we'd be happy playing for great aunt miriam.

I need to update my dance-y indie music selection. My playlist is so 2007. Due to a change in jobs, I no longer listen to Pandora/Last.fm stations, so my awareness of recent music has plummeted. I like a pretty wide range of songs, but right now I'm specifically looking for upbeat, catchy indie music that I can play on a Friday night when friends come over for a drink, or for when I bring my iPod on a run. Right now this playlist includes stuff like MGMT, Black Kids, the Tings Tings, Handsome Furs, old Michael Jackson, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc. This question was interesting but still too electronic-heavy. As I am the most predictable, low-brow listener when it comes to locating the most single-ish single on an album, it would help plenty if you could specify songs rather than just albums and artists.

My roommates, friends, and headphones thank you in advance!

My band is going on a national rock tour: what should I know? Unexpectedly, a pretty big-time act wants this indie/psych group I play with to open for them on about 40 dates this fall. The dates are almost all booked, with a little break in the middle.

I have read this thread, and this thread, so I've got a pretty good idea about what to bring in the van, but mainly I'd like to know what you wish you'd known before your own band headed out on tour, or what you, as someone tangentially involved in the music scene in your town, wished that touring bands knew about.

Also: It's been 10 years since I went on the road what kinda stuff should I expect to have changed or be vital to know about now? What resources (besides BYOFL, which as far as I can tell is useless now) most came in handy when you were playing shows around?

FYI I am also the manager/publicist/booking agent and everything else. We have a self-released album and some t-shirts as a starter kit. We're buying a van. We walk the streets at night, we go where eagles dare.

Buying CDs online

What online music retailers would you recommend? I'm interested in CDs, new and used, preferably from an independent outfit. Does your favorite bricks & mortar store have an online site? Is there an AbeBooks type of clearinghouse for smaller sellers? I don't have a lot of options in town; Best Buy isn't doing it for me, and I want an alternative to Amazon.

What is this song that sounds like the Kinks but probably isn't?

Please help me identify this song: it sounds like the Kinks, but I think it's more recent. Has something like "she asks, 'do you love me?' but she means, 'will you respect me?'" in the lyrics. I am usually pretty good at identifying random music but this one has me stumped. I heard it on the radio probably a year ago or more, but since I pretty much only listen to CBC radio or NPR it's definitely not a Top 40-type song. It sounded like the Kinks, but I think it's more likely to be one of the myriad modern indie bands that sound like the Kinks. It was about relationships and had a "person says X, person means Y" theme to its lyrics. The one line I can remember is something like, "she asks, do you love me, but she means will you respect me?" Since google turns up nothing on that, I have probably not remembered it 100% correctly. I am pretty sure I heard it on CBC radio, so it may very well be a Canadian band.

Any ideas? Every once in awhile this pops into my head and drives me nuts until I forget about it again.

Canadian Indie radio?

Where can I listen to Canadian Indie radio, online? I'm a huge fan of the XM/Sirius channel "The Verge", a Canadian independent/new artist station. Recently the sound quality has gone down the drain so I'm in the market for an alternative radio station.

Are there any other sources for Canadian Indie music? Preferably available online; cost is not an issue.

Where could I find the vocal mix of Primal Scream's "Come Together"? There is a mix of Primal Scream's Come Together, which includes (I believe) Bobby Gillespie singing a breathy vocal line which starts out "Kiss me, won't you won't you kiss me?". I believe this was released on the original 12", back in the day.

Can anybody tell me the name of the mix, and whether it was reissued on any compilations anywhere?

Uplifting Indie Rock Suggestions? (Similar to Dry Lips by Lightspeed Champion) I just downloaded Dry Lips by Lightspeed Champion and I really enjoy the uplifting beat and tone. However, the other songs on the album (at least from the 30 second clips) do not seem to have that same uplifting tone.
Anyone have recommendations for other uplifting indie rock singles or album I should take a look at if I enjoy Dry Lips by Lightspeed Champion.
I need "It could've been good if you only..." songs, in the vein of New Slang by The Shins. Does anyone know any good ones? I need this for a project on lyrics translation into Spanish. You know the type: "If only you had stayed/respected/not-left/taken out-the-trash it would have been ok" songs, mostly rock/pop songs from any era. I do not want or need recomendations for dance/hiphop/rap/heavy-metal/corny-pop-songs. Folk is ok, but I prefer Folk-Rock.

Any help would be greatly and sincerely appreciated.

How to license my songs to a student filmmaker?

What arrangements should I make with a student filmmaker who wants to use my music in his film? Someone contacted me via e-mail about using two of my songs on the soundtrack to his film. He tells me he's a college student and that his total budget for the film is $500-$1,000. He says he will release the film on DVD next year, he doesn't have much of an advertising campagin planned, and he'll mainly be selling the DVDs at school, online, and to friends and families of cast/crew.

The songs are from an album which I produced as a college student and self-released, so I understand where he's coming from. I don't plan on asking him for any money, but what exactly should I say? Do I just explain how I'd like my credit to appear and ask for a copy of the film when it's ready? Or are there other bases I should cover?

Indie/MainstreamFilter:

I have a friend who is into mainstream music, stuff that one would hear on MTV or general radio stations. I want to introduce her to some good indie music and would like some ideas of songs that would be appropriate. I asked her a song that she really likes right now and she gave me this song. I appreciate everyones help and am looking forward to seeing responses.

How do I bridge this gap gracefully?

I like indie type rock. He likes U2 and Bon Jovi. Help me make a mix cd he won't hate! I'm trying to make a mix cd composed of indie type music that isn't too...subversive? Out there? For a guy used to mainstream type rock like U2, Goo Goo Dolls, Blue Rodeo, The Fray, etc. I have made him mix cds in the past which have been mostly what I'm listening to but thought he would like. Wrong every time. Help me impress him this time. I'm looking basically for songs he's never heard of before but would be accessible to someone with his tastes. Sorry if this is vague!

For example this time I'm including:

Ryan Adams - To Be Young
Pete Yorn - Closet
Spoon - I Summon You

But also some older stuff like

Billy Joel - Vienna
Otis Redding - Try a Little Tenderness

which I know he also appreciates.

If any clarification is needed, will be watching this thread. Thanks!

what are some excellent places on then internet to talk about music?

i want to find some good music forums online. i'm a musician/dj, and i live in the 3rd world. thus, i dont get to hear a lot of new music in random places (clubs, stores, record shops, radio stations etc) like i would in a big city or college town. the best way i've found to keep up with various music scenes, as well as finding good random recommendations, is through music forums, such as this one:

forums.SOHH.com

however, i'm pretty dissapointed with the results i'm getting from google. the above forum seems ok, but none of the ones i've found seem as good as the few i used to hang out on (before they changed for various reasons)

i figure it's probably a word-of-keyboard thing, so i'm asking you guys if you can recommend some good ones. i'm specifically looking for a good forum for each of the following genres/concepts:

1. rap/r&b
2. dance music (house/electro/minimal/d&b etc)
3. indie/alternative
4. world music
5. professional musicians talking about their jobs

ideally they would cover both popular and obscure/edgy ends of the genre spectrum (though one for mainstream and one for edgy would be ok) and be populated by interesting, friendly, knowledgable people with better stuff to do than start flame wars or spam me with ads.

i'm sure they're out there! any ideas?

ps. i did google "genrename forum" for each genre, and wasn't too impressed after digging around in the sites towards the top of the results - i basically spent an entire evening googling, clicking and bookmarking, but didn't come up with any forums that really wowed me. though if i'm being too hasty to dismiss something obvious, feel free to let me know i'm not giving it enough of a chance.

</genrename>

Songs about soulmates? Always looking for the proverbial perfect love song, and thought that maybe these threads could use an update.
music for girls who hate girls?

She's so dull - come on rip her to shreds! (notterriblynicefilter) Hello.
I'm looking for songs to channel my nightmare-flatmate aggression. What is there about righteous girl-on-girl good straight-forward hatred
- about a particular woman (or non-specified person)

- BY WOMEN

- in and around the genres of punk, (old-fashioned) indie, hiphop and rock

that I can jump around to, so I don't have to jump ON anyone? Not particularly about "you stole my man" but that's good if is more aggresive than Jolene-y.
Other general "ooh I really dont like you too much" tunes, also by blokes, very welcome too!

All i have so far:
Blondie, obviously
Libel - Tilt
Solar Race - Drink my piss
and
John Cooper Clarke - Twat

Cheers!!

SongFilter: What is this song? I just heard it in a coffee shop. Sounds indie pop. Lyrics are something like "isn't it great to know people in love?" or something like that. Sorry I don't have more to go on.

Maybe the hive can be extra-resourceful on this one.
How can I find the right bass player for my band in the Philadelphia area? I'm getting frustrated trying to find a new bassist for my (indie pop) band. It has to be the right sort of person, but it shouldn't be that hard in a city like this, right? I grew up around here, but I went to college and formed my band/participated in the music scene elsewhere.

I've been posting to the Philly craigslist for weeks, and I can tell from my site's referral logs that a few people (around 70 this month) are clicking through to my web site from the postings. I've only gotten 4 or 5 responses, though, and no one has actually gotten to the point of auditioning. It makes sense that I don't hear from some people after I say "Learn these two songs for the audition, here are the chords and recordings," but I'm at a loss for why someone would read my ad, e-mail me about it, and then ignore my response.

Should I keep trying craigslist? I found my drummer quite easily six months ago from an ad on the Pittsburgh craigslist, and he's really awesome, and the Philly list seems more active. Is there something else I can do that will have a better effort/payoff ratio? A place I can post something where the right kind of people will see it? I'm not interested in wasting my time printing a bunch of tear-off flyers and hanging them in music stores where only pop-punkers and metal dudes will see them.

Here's the ad I've been posting so you can get a sense of what I'm looking for/tell me if there's something wrong with it that I'm not seeing. I don't want to waste my time on people who are not coming from the right place, but I also don't want to scare everyone away.

The French Music Scene

What kinds of music are hip French 19 year-olds (or any hip people for that matter) listening to? Who are some popular artists? A question inspired by a late night session listening to music acquired from friends while on vacation in France. I'm into all kinds of music (hip-hop, Indie Rock, World and electronic etc.) and I don't mind whether it's in English or French.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Mixtape Filter: Songs about NYC

Indie songs about New York? I'm looking for songs about or making reference to New York, as in the City. Not looking for classic songs like "New York, New York", but stuff more in the modern & indie realm.

A few I already have in mind:

- LCD Soundsystem - New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down
- Interpol - NYC
- NOFX - Olympia, WA
- Beastie Boys - An Open Letter to NYC

What else ya got? Thanks :)
