I can't find a cool, graphical web engine for identifying similar bands that I once used -- input a band, and it would generate a neat display of others, with your pick at the center and the others radiating out with the closest being the most similar. [more inside]

MusicFilter: I really seem to have a thing for bands that combine two vastly different genres. For example, Dimmu Borgir combines an orchestra and a death metal band to form an excellent mix of metal + symphonic. What other bands should I check out? [more inside]

Does anyone know the URL of a site where you entered a band you like and it showed connections to other bands based on a recommendation system? The whole thing was done in flash and looked very cool.

Just saw Walk the Line, which opens with Johnny Cash's performance at Folsom Prison, and I was wondering: what other bands (of any genre) have also played prisons and for what reason? I guess mental institutions count, but only if they're for the criminally insane ;-)

A long time ago I found a website where you could type in the name of a band/artist you liked, and it would show a web-shaped layout of other bands that were similar, those being the closest in sound and style physically closest to the name of the band entered (which was centered on the page). Anyone have any idea what I am talking about or know of a similar webiste???

I'm looking for inspiration. The subject is band/musical artist photographs... not live images, but portraits and art shots that accompany articles and are used for band promotion. Can anyone recommend some photographers, websites or individual images for me to check out? (I already know about Annie Leibovitz, Anton Corbijn, Steve Gullick and Chris Buck, but feel free to point out particular shots by these artists that you admire anyhow.)

I'm part of a Chicago-based band, and we're on the cusp of releasing our first full-length studio album. We're not on a label, so we have to find radio stations to play our stuff and record stores to carry our CD's ourselves. Are there any good resources out there to help indie bands find these? Can you share any indie-friendly stores/stations in Chicago yourself?

Back in the day, I used to like to go slink around mp3.com, pull down a couple of mp3s based on bands' stated influences, and then, maybe, buy an album or two. Is there any sort of reputable band community offering free mp3 downloads of unsigned or indy bands now that mp3.com is dead? I found IUMA and SoundClick, but they don't seem to be as solid as mp3.com was.

Does anyone remember the PBS series "On Tour?" It was on late Saturday nights when I was in high school, and I remember it being sponsored by IBM. Each 60-minute program was composed entirely of different rock bands doing live performances (usually at very large venues). It was usually one or two songs per band. There was an occasional interview with a roadie, but otherwise it was all music. The show's page has been "retired" from PBS.org. Did these shows ever get put on VHS or DVD?

[MusicRecommendationFilter] I'm looking for some new groups to listen to. I'm looking for bands that play "live" techno music. That is, music that sounds like techno but is played on live instruments. I know some bands dabble in this, but I'm looking for others. More description inside.
