MusicFilter: I really like the track "Happy" by Max Sedgely, and "You can't go home again" by DJ Shadow but I don't really know this genre of music too well. What other artists/tracks can you recommend that are in this style? It's a sort of deep funk house type thing.

I just scored a bimonthly live dj gig, the theme of which is jazz. I am pretty well grounded in the classics, and am into modern bands/peeps such as Happy Apple, D. Krall and Charlie Hunter, I was wondering what people out there suggest looking at for brand new jazz, what is exciting nowadays?

At the Frankfurt Musikmesse '04, Powercore did a demo of some of it's latest Whizzbang equipment to let DJ's apply less-fake sounding filters to music samples and other fun things. The guy who did the presentation, Jim Motley,
seems like an absolute spaz, and it's kinda fun to see how into it he is. Here's for the question - does anyone recognize the music that he's messing with in there? It seems like a British version of Ozomatli, which could be a fun thing.
I can't get this outta my head. Anyone recognize it?

Here's Jim, freakin' out.

My dance group is looking for a way to play CDs at variable speeds. There are a few variable speed CD players on the market, or, it's likely that a laptop could be used to play CDs and .mp3s at variable speed. (Variable speed is really useful for teaching dances.) We have raised $600 so far. Experiences? Recommendations?

In trance/techno music, where does the following pattern come from: A major bass hit on the first beat of the measure, then doubling to the first and third beat a couple measures later, then every beat, then eighth notes, sixteenth notes - usually accompanied by a melodic glissando climbing octaves or a vocal loop stuttering - until it releases (usually to a short pause) and then plunges into the full bass loop (and usually the chorus). Where'd this come from? What/who was the first song or DJ to use it?
