I bought 4 ounces of dried porcini mushrooms last year with the intent of making a bunch of Magic Mushroom Powder for people as Christmas gifts. This did not happen. The mushrooms have been sitting in a dark cupboard in the dining room (so away from sources of heat in the kitchen) for the last year. They came in 1 ounce plastic bags that are still sealed shut. Okay to use? I'd like to actually make the powder this year. Thanks!
I've been drinking herbal tea (without green or black tea) for a while, and recently have been adding Chaga and Lion's Mane mushroom powder to my base herbal tea. It may be my perception, but I seem to be getting a nice brain state from this combination. What are some other teas I could be drinking in the morning that will make my brain happy and energized, yet don't contain traditional (black or green) tea or caffeine? [more inside]
I have heard that Psilocybin Mushrooms have shown to have clinical benefits for depression and addiction among other things. I have had recreational experience with it in the 70s-80s but have not used it since then. I am interested in exploring a clinical treatment with Psilocybin Mushrooms but have no idea where to start looking. Does anyone have any experience with this clinically or have any suggestions of direction to take? Thanks Hive...Be well
I'm taking shrooms for the first time tomorrow, for purposes both recreational and therapeutic, and I want to make the most of my experience. There's a thread similar to this, but it focuses mainly on music suggestions, whereas I'd like this to be somewhat taste-agnostic. Details pertaining to me are within, but do feel free to leave general tips for future readers. [more inside]
I have heard and read that psychedelics like LSD and shrooms act on serotonin receptors and that once those receptors fill up (either with actual serotonin or antagonists) no additional effect will be felt from taking a higher dose. I would really like to find actual academic references about this, but all I'm seeing is casual comments on message boards, backed up with nothing. Unfortunately, my Google Fu is failing me here and it's driving me crazy. [more inside]
I got to work with this example when I took a mycology class a few years ago, and it occurred to me that watching it grow might be kind of beautiful... if the years it took were compressed to a minute or so. I've found no such timelapses, however.

Given the success of medical and recreational marijuana initiatives in the US and the strengthening support for ending cannabis prohibition, why haven't we also seen a push for the legalization of shrooms for medical purposes? [more inside]
My family's been living in this house for about ten years, and early on I noticed we had a fairy ring on the property. When our kids were little, they loved the fairy ring and asked me to mow around it, which I've done for the past six or seven years. This year I noticed that it seemed to expand. Since I don't cut it, there's a circle of longer grass from last year inside of where the fairy ring showed up this spring, as if the ring grew a little bit larger. I also noticed a smaller fairy ring, about a quarter of the size, seemed to be growing about fifteen yards away. I guess what I'm wondering is, by not mowing over the fairy ring, are we helping it get bigger, maybe even spawning baby fairy rings? What do you know about the care, feeding, and life cycle of the domesticated fairy ring? [more inside]
A bunch of years ago I read the first chapter of a French novel. It was funny. In that first chapter the narrator's family spends a day picking mushrooms, then eats them for dinner and they all die. The writer was French (possibly Belgian), with a 'punchy' name as I remember it. The novel was 'comic' (I think), and not especially long. I want to say it was written between the 50's and 60's but don't remember why I think that. There's a chance the author is also known for some other, non-writing endeavor (a la Nick Cave). I never wrote down the name of the novel or the writer because both had lodged in my head. Well, they've become dis-lodged and recently I went mushroom picking and spent the whole time trying to remember this novel and/or its author. Please. I've googled to no avail.
I have no background knowledge in mycology whatsoever. But I would like to improve my mushroom-identification knowledge from zero to at least beginner-101 level. What resources [online, print books, or other] might be most useful for someone [me] who wants to be able to recognize the mushrooms near his home in Upper Valley VT/NH? Bonus points for resources that will help me to understand whether the mushroom is dangerous for dogs to ingest. [more inside]
Dear people of Mefi, please help me. I am a serial killer of houseplants. Two years ago I inherited my daughter's houseplants when she moved, including this small tree-like thing. I'll admit it's a bit twisted but it's not dead yet. But what the effing jeff is this stuff? How did it get there? What did I do? Why is it yellow? Will it kill the plant? Will it kill us all? How shall I deal with it, should I dig it up? Chuck the whole plant out? Why did it even happen? And how will I face my daughter now? tell you what, it's put me right off (Title refers to answer of well-known UK children's riddle.) [more inside]
I went to visit my folks today, which was great. My dad and mom have a beautiful place in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and I noticed a great bloom of very serious mushrooms on one isolated part of their lawn. My 8 year old daughter plays there frequently as does my folks' 4 year old yellow lab (argh, no photos, sorry) and I am concerned and curious about what is growing on the lawn this year. Not only are they awesome and copious, but some of them have bites in them and are rotting and sagging. Any experts care to weigh in? I would like to know what they are, how poisonous they are (or not) and how to get rid of them if they are That Bad....photos below the fold...$5 bill may appear for size comparison.... I am captivated by the sheer variety and number of these guys this year. I just want to know more about them in general and if there are any precautions I need to take. Thank you, guys, as always. Pics below the fold. [more inside]

A friend gave me some freshly picked porcini (boletus) mushrooms. Some of the bigger ones which looked fine on the outside, were almost hollow and full of bugs inside. They were squiggly white worm-like, with black heads. Either maggots or mealworms. I don't have a problem eating insects, but was wondering if it's safe to eat this particular type of bug? Thanks.
