A bunch of years ago I read the first chapter of a French novel. It was funny. In that first chapter the narrator's family spends a day picking mushrooms, then eats them for dinner and they all die.
The writer was French (possibly Belgian), with a 'punchy' name as I remember it.
The novel was 'comic' (I think), and not especially long.
I want to say it was written between the 50's and 60's but don't remember why I think that.
There's a chance the author is also known for some other, non-writing endeavor (a la Nick Cave).
I never wrote down the name of the novel or the writer because both had lodged in my head.
Well, they've become dis-lodged and recently I went mushroom picking and spent the whole time trying to remember this novel and/or its author.
Please. I've googled to no avail.

I have no background knowledge in mycology whatsoever. But I would like to improve my mushroom-identification knowledge from zero to at least beginner-101 level. What resources [online, print books, or other] might be most useful for someone [me] who wants to be able to recognize the mushrooms near his home in Upper Valley VT/NH? Bonus points for resources that will help me to understand whether the mushroom is dangerous for dogs to ingest. [more inside]

Dear people of Mefi, please help me. I am a serial killer of houseplants. Two years ago I inherited my daughter's houseplants when she moved, including this small tree-like thing
. I'll admit it's a bit twisted but it's not dead yet. But what the effing jeff is this stuff
? How did it get there? What did I do? Why is it yellow? Will it kill the plant? Will it kill us all? How shall I deal with it, should I dig it up? Chuck the whole plant out? Why did it even happen
? And how will I face my daughter now?
tell you what, it's put me right off
(Title refers to answer of well-known UK children's riddle.) [more inside]

I went to visit my folks today, which was great. My dad and mom have a beautiful place in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and I noticed a great bloom of very serious mushrooms on one isolated part of their lawn. My 8 year old daughter plays there frequently as does my folks' 4 year old yellow lab (argh, no photos, sorry) and I am concerned and curious about what is growing on the lawn this year. Not only are they awesome and copious, but some of them have bites in them and are rotting and sagging. Any experts care to weigh in? I would like to know what they are, how poisonous they are (or not) and how to get rid of them if they are That Bad....photos below the fold...$5 bill may appear for size comparison....
I am captivated by the sheer variety and number of these guys this year. I just want to know more about them in general and if there are any precautions I need to take. Thank you, guys, as always. Pics below the fold. [more inside]

I really enjoy eating sautéd chanterelles
. Can you recommend similar dishes that are quick to make (~10 min), have very few, fresh ingredients and have an elegant and mild flavor?

Help! I'm looking for a source where I can buy about 30 Ganoderma applanatum fungi
, also known as shelf fungus, bracket mushrooms, and artist conks. The idea is to use them for an art workshop, so they need to be blank. I'm really striking out on Google. Any ideas?

After the tragic death of a friend in an accident while on psychedelic drugs, I told my parents about brief psychedelic drug experimentation in the past. Problem: now family think I'm a hopeless addict, completely distrust me, think they have failed completely, and are scared to pieces that I'm going to die and am a bad person. How do I convince them otherwise? [more inside]

A friend gave me some freshly picked porcini (boletus) mushrooms. Some of the bigger ones which looked fine on the outside, were almost hollow and full of bugs inside. They were squiggly white worm-like, with black heads. Either maggots or mealworms. I don't have a problem eating insects, but was wondering if it's safe to eat this particular type of bug? Thanks.

How can I mail chanterelles? Will freshly picked chanterelles hold up unrefrigerated in a cardboard box for 3-5 days? If not, will sauteed and vacuum-sealed ones make it? I would like to send some fresh as a gift, but not if they show up rotten and slimy.

My wife, and her family, insist that "white" supermarket mushrooms must be "peeled" (or, barring that, washed) prior to eating. I always ate the things right out of the package, possibly using a brush to get the black stuff (dirt? mushroom grower poop?) off, if I think of it. Do mushrooms need
to be peeled or cleaned?

I have been searching for video of a 1980s UK advert quite possibly for mushrooms, which featured lines of mushrooms marching towards the viewer chanting "Make Room For The Mushrooms!" I have looked on YouTube, etc and searched vaguely around torrent sites. Does anyone have it on VHS just waiting to be capped and uploaded or (more realistically) any ideas where I might find it or where else I might ask

Has anyone tried growing edible mushrooms in their garden? I can't find much info online apart from commercial sites selling fairly expensive growing kits (and a heap of sites on psychedelica). I figured there must be a more economical method ...
