I have heard and read that psychedelics like LSD and shrooms act on serotonin receptors and that once those receptors fill up (either with actual serotonin or antagonists) no additional effect will be felt from taking a higher dose. My family's been living in this house for about ten years, and early on I noticed we had a fairy ring on the property. When our kids were little, they loved the fairy ring and asked me to mow around it, which I've done for the past six or seven years. This year I noticed that it seemed to expand. Since I don't cut it, there's a circle of longer grass from last year inside of where the fairy ring showed up this spring, as if the ring grew a little bit larger. I also noticed a smaller fairy ring, about a quarter of the size, seemed to be growing about fifteen yards away. I guess what I'm wondering is, by not mowing over the fairy ring, are we helping it get bigger, maybe even spawning baby fairy rings? A bunch of years ago I read the first chapter of a French novel. It was funny. In that first chapter the narrator's family spends a day picking mushrooms, then eats them for dinner and they all die. The writer was French (possibly Belgian), with a 'punchy' name as I remember it. The novel was 'comic' (I think), and not especially long. I want to say it was written between the 50's and 60's but don't remember why I think that. There's a chance the author is also known for some other, non-writing endeavor (a la Nick Cave). I never wrote down the name of the novel or the writer because both had lodged in my head. Well, they've become dis-lodged and recently I went mushroom picking and spent the whole time trying to remember this novel and/or its author. Please. I've googled to no avail.

Dear people of Mefi, please help me. I am a serial killer of houseplants. Two years ago I inherited my daughter's houseplants when she moved, including this small tree-like thing. I went to visit my folks today, which was great. My dad and mom have a beautiful place in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and I noticed a great bloom of very serious mushrooms on one isolated part of their lawn. My 8 year old daughter plays there frequently as does my folks' 4 year old yellow lab (argh, no photos, sorry) and I am concerned and curious about what is growing on the lawn this year. Not only are they awesome and copious, but some of them have bites in them and are rotting and sagging. Any experts care to weigh in? A friend gave me some freshly picked porcini (boletus) mushrooms. Some of the bigger ones which looked fine on the outside, were almost hollow and full of bugs inside. My wife, and her family, insist that "white" supermarket mushrooms must be "peeled" (or, barring that, washed) prior to eating.
