Bored in Ann Arbor: *How* does one find new things to do?

Bored in Ann Arbor: *How* does one find new things to do? So, I'm a medical student who lives in Ann Arbor ... and I'm bored. Like, super seriously ridiculously majorly bored. All I do is go to school/work, stay there for hours on end doing whatever they want me to do, and then get home anywhere between 6 and 9 and try to push myself to study, but usually end up failing. Sometimes, I say "fuck it" and play video games for hours on end, making my next day at work that much more miserable.

This isn't to say I don't like my work. I just ... need some additional stuff outside of med school to look forward to in life. I need stimulation outside of med school. I feel like if I had something interesting that I knew I'd be doing later this week or so, something to focus on and say to myself "Cool, I'll be doing X on Friday, nice", I wouldn't waste so much time on a day-to-day basis doing random, stupid shit.

But ... I don't know *how* to find things to do. I mean, this is Ann Arbor. There are supposed to be comedy clubs and music venues and museums and God knows what else to see and do here. I just don't know how people find things to do when they haven't grown up in the city that they're in. There has to be a website or something that lists this stuff?

So, HiveMind, this becomes a 2-part question:

1) What sources (websites especially) can I use to find events that are happening in Ann Arbor or surrounding cities, like Detroit (music, comedy shows, exhibitions, anything), but also museums/other locations that I might be interested in? Are there are specific websites that are good for each one of these things, or is there one website that consolidates a bunch of this information?

2) What *process* do you use in order to find said websites? I ask because if/when I move to a new city, I'd like to be able to find things to do without relying on MeFi (although I love you all).

Sunday fun in NYC

What's something fun and cheap and indoorsy we can do this Sunday afternoon in nyc? My super picky sister is once again visiting this Sunday. What should we do? In the past, I've taken her to Broadway shows, the King Tut exhibit, the wax museum, and random shopping. She liked all that. HOWEVER, right now we're still recovering from the holidays, so we can't really afford something expensive like a show. Also its cold and snowy out there, so wandering around outside at say, Botanical Gardens or the zoo is out.

Something that costs under $30 each would be ideal. We'd prefer Manhattan or just slightly into Brooklyn. I was thinking maybe some cool brunch place that also has music? Or… anything else really. All suggestions welcome!

(I know theskint and timeoutnyc etc will list stuff later in the week, but we'd like to make plans as early as possible.)

Advice for quickie vacation in San Francisco?

Taking a three-day visit to San Francisco in mid-February. I’ve already bookmarked some of the excellent previous AskMe answers, but I’ve got some specific questions… Getting around: we’re not renting a car, and we will probably get a multi-day transit pass. Are there any specific areas you would recommend not going via public transit, for safety or convenience reasons?

Location: we’re staying at the Triton, near Chinatown. Any can't miss places for food, shopping, or culture nearby? Places to avoid?

Food: Mr. Arkham is a pescatarian, I'm an omnivore. The two things on the "must have" list are raw oysters and dim sum. Recommended places?

Tourist stuff: not too interested in anything super-touristy, but is there something that everyone does that’s actually worth seeing? Note, I am 100% not going on an Alcatraz tour, or anything involving getting on a boat.

Museums: We’re planning on going to Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences. Has anyone ever been to one? What is the general dress/vibe like?

We’re also planning on going to MOMA, unless there is a lesser-known place we should be spending our limited time visiting. We are somewhat spoiled with good (free!) museums here in DC so seeing a Warhol or two is not as high a priority as seeing something really unusual.

Photography: I’m interested in historic cemeteries and classic architecture. Where should I go to take photos?

Live music: I’ve been looking for a list of small live music venues, but I’m mostly finding DJ nights and places with larger mainstream acts. Our tastes run to garage, punk, rockabilly, alt-country. Neo-surf music would be spectacular.

Thank you for reading all of this, and I look forward to your insight!

Green Concierge Seeks Los Angeles Infodump

I'm starting a new job as a telephone concierge at a Brand-new upscale retail/housing establishment in Glendale, CA next week—can you help me get my ear to the ground? Clients will be both tenants of the property and casual shoppers, and I am expected to provide expert-level concierge service. However, I'm relatively new in town, and the time I've spent here has been confined to a rather narrow corridor between Echo Park and central Hollywood. My boss is even newer to town than I, and I'd like to make a good impression by hitting the ground running for this gig. Please, I'm eager for all types of suggestions:
- Specifics on LA destinations (restaurants, attractions, events, nightlife, etc. with a focus on upscale, hip, guaranteed solid types of establishments)
- Hints/tips on transportation and navigation
- Blogs, websites, mailing lists, and RSS feeds that will keep me up to date on all of this stuff (I've subscribed to some related AskMe tags already; what am I missing? =o)
- Dead tree rags I should be reading regularly
- Any other information you can provide
Glendale is my first priority, but superior knowledge of all of Los Angeles is my ultimate goal. As mentioned above, I'm working my way through pertinent tags here on AskMe, but if you know of any relevant/obscure questions I might like to see please do mention them. Also, as a sub-question, do you have any tips on this type of job? I've worked as a TTY Relay Operator before and am happy to customer-serve, so I'm not completely unaware of what it entails. But if there's any specific advice you're holding I'd appreciate a share. Thanks!
Yes, I run with my ear to the ground; talented like that.
