Games with great multiplayer?

Games with great multiplayer? I really enjoy games like Battlefied2 where its 32 vs 32 multiplayer with squad play, but its starting to get old. What other games are like this? I'm looking for multiplayer thats a little more smart than a simple shoot-em-up deathmatch.

PC, Wii, and Xbox360 games only please. Thanks.

Fun, free multiplayer games?

Me and a couple of friends enjoy playing Grand Theft Auto 2 online. It's a freely available nowadays, and it's good, uncomplicated fun. Can you recommend any similar multiplayer games, preferably free? Now, a few of my friends have a thing against fantasy/scifi themed games, but if the gameplay is good, it doesn't really matter. It should be fast-paced, and it should work on medium-spec PCs. Any ideas?

How do I determine if older multiplayer games are still up and running?

What's the best way to find out whether or not an older online multiplayer game still has an active user base? Short of purchasing the game and looking for myself, of course. For example, if I wanted to buy something like Unreal Tournament 2004 or Quake 3, how would I first go about determining whether or not there would even be anyone online for me to play against? Is there any sort of centralized database or web site for these type of stats? In this case, I'm looking for older multiplayer games that will run smoothly on a laptop, but more generally I'm wondering how to determine if any given multiplayer game is still actively played online.

Mac and PC Are Having a LAN Party

Looking for multiplayer, low system requirement Mac or PC games for LAN and network play. I've got a Macbook (2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, and 64MB onboard graphics) and my brother has a PC. We're looking for some games we can play together through LAN. His computer is fairly powerful, so the real problem is on my end.

I'm looking for games that are either compatible with mac (preferably intel) or pc (I can run these in bootcamp) with relatively low system requirements so that my computer can handle it. Right now the only games I have are Civ3 and Age of Kings/Conquerors, which I play in bootcamp. I'm open to any genre but I mostly like first-person shooters or RTS/strategy games. Preferably games with bots or computer players, so it will not just be 1v1. We'd play games like CS or TFC but those games don't have bots.

Are there any Wii games (released or announced) that support more than 4 players? I don't care how; It could use the GC controller ports, multiple Wiis each with a copy of the game or be turn-based like Worms. I just don't want a group of six people to mean that two fall asleep.

Help us play together

Help me find the ideal Mac game for two people separated by hundreds of miles. We've both got OS X. We're looking for something casual and perhaps a bit puzzle-y that we can play together over the Internet. Freeware preferred. Needs to be more of a strategy game than reflex-based, and it should be for 2 players (i.e. not massive). Any suggestions?

Good multi-player games for PS2

Multi-player games for the Playstation2 for smaller children. I have four little boys (ages: 3,5,6,8), and we love to play games on our PS2. We currently like Jak and Daxter (1,2), Ratchet and Clank (1,2,3), Super Monkeyball Deluxe, SSX Tricky, DDR Max, Sly Cooper (1,2,3), Piglet's Big Game, Simpson's Hit And Run, Ty The Tasmanian Tiger.

Can anyone suggest any PS1 or PS2 multi-player games? We bought Ape Escape 2 - Pumped and Primed to play together, but it kind of sucks. Looking for something that multiple people can play at the same time if possible.

How fast can information be through socket connections?

LatencyFilter: I'm making a multiplayer flash game, where players communicate with each other via a socket connection to a server. How fast can information be sent like this? The game is going to be kind of like a variant of snake, where each player controls a snake or worm, and a player dies if he crashes his snake into someone else.

For this to work each player has to send the current coordinates of the head of his snake to the server, and the server then has to send it out to every other player in the game. I need this to happen as often as possible.

Currently, the game looks acceptably good at 10 frames per second. As far as I get it, with that frame rate, the time between the coordinates are sent from one player to it reaches another can't be any more than 100 ms. Would that be achievable, as long as all players are connected to the server through an always open socket connection?

How much would it matter that the server is able to process the information quickly?

The information I need to send has to have three digits for both the x and y coordinates. If x = 400 and y = 500, I imagine what would be sent would be a string like "400500" followed by a zero byte.

Also, I haven't started creating the server-side program that is going to deal with this. Does it matter what programming language I use for it?

Battlefield 2 multiplayer, worth it for the casual gamer?

I'm looking into buying Battlefield 2, for the multiplayer experience. Can anyone comment on the ability to accomodate the casual gamer? I've always been turned off by multiplayer games as it seems only a select few who play all day control the flow of the game. Is it easy to just pick up a quick game here and there? There appears to be a ranking system and I've read at various exploits at people who take advantage of it. Is there a good feeling of team for those who don't join a squad? Do people bond enough to work together even through one game? Or do a few rogues end up spoiling it for everyone?

I'm often dismayed at playing and being totally whiped out by those who seem to be able to exploit every nuance of every map. Playing the demo seemed just a free-for-all rush.

Maybe I'm just being lame about this, if the answer to these questions is "it happens in all multiplayer games", is there a general rule to avoid such miscreats and anti-social types?

I guess as a side-note (though this would properly be in MeTa), would there be interest in making a Metafilter squad?

Looking for a decent multiplayer co-op game.

I'm looking for a decent multi player co-op game... There's nothing like that moment when your loved one turns to you with that look in her eye, the one that says `let's play computer games together'.

We like playing multi player co-op games together, and have played Diablo II and it's expansion through a couple of times. Now, we're looking for something else good.

I like first person shooters, but they make her motion sick, so the ideal game would :

* Be non first person
* Have a plot
* NOT be an online game (I fear they will eat all my time)
* Preferably not turn based
* Preferably not RTS (but suggest one if it's good!)

Any suggestions?
