Great works of the Web-ern Canon

A lot of ink has been spilled on the subject of whether video games are art, but rorgy's recent megapost on Homestuck reminded me that comparatively little has been written on the idea of Internet Art. Such works that leverage the internet as a unique creative medium fascinate me, and I'd love to find more. What are some other works that qualify? [more inside]

Master program in Multimedia/video production

Has anyone completed a master degree in multimedia? This would be a production degree, not research or theoretical. I work instructional design and support in a elearning group through a major university and have a chance to get tuition at very low cost. I am just not sure if gong through the program will make a difference in obtaining better positions later. I am in my early 40's and transferred to this position/industry after moving around in IT for about 10 years. [more inside]

Help me find a great COTS graphics/multimedia PC

I'm a graphics and multimedia artist working for the federal government who's always used Macs. It's again time for me to get a new system (laptop, please) and for the first time in my career I feel the need to explore my PC options (Apple has apparently abandoned its professional users). Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start looking. My new system needs to be commercially available from a vendor that can do business with the federal government. Building my own system is not an option. I perform a full range of creative functions including graphic design, video editing, photography and webcast hosting, so I need plenty of graphics power and fast processing. I don't, however, need a huge local storage capacity since I work off of our LAN. Where do I start looking? Any recommendations on models and/or features?

How do I find out if my wireless bridge, wireless router is the problem?

This is a follow up to this question. My cable provider allows me to use ethernet instead of coax. Wired works fine, but wireless bridge sort of works fine ... it'll play fine for long stretches then inexplicably freeze up. No other devices are on the wireless network. How can I troubleshoot this problem? I can certainly upgrade my router, which is 300mbps wireless-n, but I have a feeling that raw bandwidth isn't the issue. Any ideas? [more inside]

Embryology Multimedia

I am taking an embryology class online and I don't feel like I get it even after doing the readings and assignments. The textbook is Moore and Persaud's Before We Are Born. Right now we are learning all of the details of the development of the human embryo from conception to three weeks. What I need are animations, videos, and other multimedia resources since reading alone isn't doing it for me. I haven't been successful with google. Can anybody direct me toward resources? Thanks!

Pimp my office PC, nonprofit style

Your job requires you to do multimedia work from time to time but gives you only a standard Windows install with Office and MS Paint to do it with. Installing anything new requires a call to IT. Your nonprofit employer currently has no budget to buy you the software you need. What cheap or free utilities, plug-ins or browser extensions do you install while waiting for the clouds to open and copies of, say, Adobe CS Master Collection and Final Cut Pro to fall from the sky? Multimedia school?

Are there any universities/colleges/institutes that have an all-in-one program for video, photography, print and web design? My online searches have come up fruitless as most programs seem to be separated out. Location doesn't matter, nor does degree/diploma/certificate received. At the end of it I want to be able to shoot, light, edit, etc video and photos and understand and apply colour theory, typography, page layout, etc for print and web designs.

Thinking about hiring out some video production...

The company I work for is interested in doing more with video clips in multimedia/video sales pieces (for tradeshows and sales visits) as well as smaller Flash web pieces for our company site. To that end, one of our marketing managers is starting to talk to video production houses in our area about doing some shoots to give us stock video footage to use in our marketing campaigns. What are the questions you would ask when talking to such outfits you're thinking about hiring? What are the industry standards for video deliverables (file types and formats that can then be redeployed via Premier or Flash into a variety of media)? What red flags should we look for that indicate someone doesn't know what they're talking about and should not be contracted? Thanks!
