Steep hill, can't mow it, no time to maintain it.

I have a hill on one side of my house that goes down into the neighbor's yard. It's too steep to mow, and the ground covering plants I've put down have always lost to the weeds. What's a good cost-effective and low (preferably zero) maintenance option for keeping it from becoming overgrown and looking horrible? More inside. [more inside]

Mulch Me, Maybe

Bronx WoodchipperFilter: we have a ~ 24ft x 12ft x 7ft mess of branches in our backyard after a massive clean-up. We thought the most efficient way to take care of it would be to use a wood chipper to turn it into mulch to spread across the backyard-- what's the best way to go about this? [more inside]

Will sawdust that has varnish kill my garden?

Will sawdust that has varnish kill my garden? A friend of the family asked if we wanted a large pile of sawdust he had from doing some woodwork. Sawdust makes good mulch. We wanted to accept, but some of the furniture that the sawdust had come from had been varnished and we weren't sure if that would kill our garden and/or poison the plants. Is it dangerous to use this sawdust.

How do I get leaves to turn into mulch or compost?

I have a humongous pile of leaves in a corner of my back yard, that had been building up for about three years now. It is nearly four feet high and occupies about 15 square feet. I thought it would automatically turn into mulch, but this doesn't seem to be happening. None of the mulch or compost-related sites I've googled seem to deal with a leaf pile of this unwieldy size and bulk. How can I make this monster disappear into something that looks and acts like dirt?
