One of my mp3 files does not get burned to CD in its entirety (using Windows Media Player). The actual duration is roughly 53 minutes, and the mp3 plays flawlessly all the way through in WMP, but only around 48 minutes gets burned to the CD. [more inside]

I have a podcast that downloads as multiple segments over multiple days. Its format arrives as YYYYMMDD_showcode_segment.mp3; so, for example, one download might result in files as 20090323_goofa_01.mp3 through 20090323_goofa_21.mp3, and also within the same download 20090324_goofa_01.mp3 through 20090324_goofa_21.mp3. What I'm looking for is a Unix script (shell, perl, what have you) that would look at a directory and look at what dates are represented there, and let me join all of the segments together by day. I can use mpgtx -j to do the actual joining; I'm looking for the code that would let the script determine what dates are in the directory and then get each day's segments united into a single MP3 for that day's show.

So I recently came to the end of correcting all the ID3 tags on my massive music collection. The last 14 or so took me more time than I'm willing to admit to track down information on. But I knew at the end which two would remain. I've had these two songs in my collection for at least a decade now, and every time I've tried to find any information on the song titles, artist, or even lyrics, I've turned up nothing. I've tried all kinds of tricks I know for finding even the most obscure information on the internet, but still nothing. As a firm believer that anything which exists can be found on the internet, I find myself troubled that these songs, which clearly exist, apparently do not. Help me out, and try to cure my madness? I'm not sure if it was ever linked on Metafilter, but I remember running across a web site where bands could set up online streaming and downloading of their music, with multiple audio formats and multiple pricing options. There were also various visualizers built into the music players. Hive mind, who can help me track down the URL I've lost? It was a relatively recent find in my travels on the internets—possibly late 2008.

I have thousands of WMA files I want converted to MP3. Is there a freeware program or a good inexpensive program that will batch convert the files while preserving the original bitrate and ID3 in the final MP3 file and also creating a directory structure such as artist\album? What song is this? Ethereal and moody vocals (not quite spy, not quite gothic, but leaning ecletic), jazz rock background, sounds a bit like early Goldfrapp, or Morphine, or maybe even Darling Violetta. (All pretty approximate.) Very rough lyrics: I call you Tracy, You get along, You lovely... sing me your song. I call you darling, I know it's strong. I bet... ...and on. Show goes on. Show goes on. I call you ... ... I call you Liza B. I wish I could see That maybe it's only my dream. It's only my dream. Show goes on. Show goes on. I miss... ...queen of bees (beasts?). That honey Suzie, bewitched by me. I think you're... what else can be? ... ... Be my promise breaker, ... delusion maker, ... I wish I could see, It's only my dream. Show goes on, The show goes on.

What is the duration of the longest digital (or digitized) sound recording? What is it of? And where can it be listened to? I'm not interested in midi, only natural recorded sound. Is there a theoretical limit to a digital sound recording? Tape can go on forever, but filesystems and drive space would have to eventually limit the size of the file (or do I have that wrong?). Just curious. I'll take my answer off the air.
