I have a lot of digital music files in a lot of different formats. MP3, m4a, AAC, FLAC. I currently use iTunes and I mostly dislike it. I need to start over and find a solution for organizing and playing my 500(?) GB of music. [more inside]
What program should I use to burn my mp3 music files onto a USB drive and equalize them? If I simply copy the files off my computer, the volume is variable from one song to another, so I need to have the ability to equalize. I used to have Nero, but it doesn't function on my newer Windows 7 computer. [more inside]
Recently I totaled my car and lost all my favorite CDs that were stored in the disc changer. I never ripped any of the albums to a computer so no digital copies exist, but I do have all the original cases and booklets. Is it possible to legally download digital copies to replace what I've already purchased?
An older relative with a daily train commute has requested a music player for the holidays - but they don't want anything with extra features, novel menus, or - if it can be helped - a shuffle feature. All they want is the ability to listen to an entire album (from a selection of about 20) with very clear and easy to understand menus and buttons. They were given a Zune for this purpose a few years ago and returned it saying it was confusing and had "too many settings". What should I buy? [more inside]
Many years ago, there was a blog (now long gone) about children's music, and the owner posted MP3s of every single song played on The Muppet Show, obviously ripped from video of the show itself. They were stored on some file storage site that no longer exists, and were available for download in ZIP files, sorted by season. I once had these files, but cruel time and hard drive failures have stolen them from me. Help me restore my collection of Muppet music!
I am trying to find the mp3 of a song from a youtube video. Is there a service like TinEye, but for music? Alternately, is this something you wonderful MeFites could help me find? I'm looking for the music in this video. Thanks! [more inside]
I recently discovered Spotify and love it. For the past years I still mostly listened to music from cd's I bought over 10 years ago, and I have a lot of fun discovering different music. The only problem with Spotify for me is that it works on my phone, and I would prefer to use a standard mp3 player (not iPod). Almost all my music listening is when I'm exercising and when I'm offline. [more inside]
I recently switched to an iMac after a lifetime of being a PC user. It's been great, except for this one mystery: What's the best way to play single MP3 tracks that you don't much care about, without them mucking up your pristine iTunes database? [more inside]
I'd like to get my soon-to-be 3-yr-old nephew an mp3 player, preferably with external speakers, and external SD card slot. A previous thread here suggested the SweetPea, but there seems to be a lot of debate about the quality of the current model. The Sansa Shake was also mentioned, but seems to be out of production. The others I've looked at seem to be less than impressive. Any current suggestions?

In preparation of my MeFi Swap playlist, I'd like to cull through the massive list of possible songs I've generated by sorting them by tempo. I'd like to do this without manually listening to songs to compare them to one another (partially because I don't think I'd be particularly good at it). Is there any resource online for finding out the tempo of songs, either a database with that kind of information or an app which I can feed an mp3 to find out?
In honor of (juke)Boxing Day, I want to move into the 21st century, and wrangle my prehistoric CDs into digital forms. Delight me with techniques for central storage and playback of all my musics! [more inside]
Longest of long shots but does anybody recall hearing a rap/hiphop song on bandcamp with a Vanilla Ice sample? The beat may have had a bit of the "under pressure" bass line and some hand claps. About 3 times through the song they'd throw the vanilla ice sample in from "Ice Ice Baby" and right when the sample said ".....alright stop" the beat would cut out for a few seconds and then start back up.
I have all this music on my iPhone. But when I go to play it, it has to download it from the cloud first. Although the playlists are there, nothing is actually being stored on the phone. So it takes ages and chews through lots of data when I just want to play a song. How do I get rid of all this cloud nonsense and just store old-fashioned music files on my iPhone? (Relevant: I have iTunes Match switched *off* in Settings -> Music on my iPhone.)
I'm preparing to revamp my digital music library, including re-encoding a lot of high-bitrate OGG tracks as MP3 to increase portability and cut down on file size. What are the best LAME encoder settings to maximize appreciable quality for the future without taking up too much space? [more inside]
I'd like to be able to play my 30+GB iTunes music library in the living room, without needing a computer, and without spending more than around $250. I don't have a receiver, speakers or an iPod without enough capacity to hold my full library, though I do use iTunes Match. What are some good options for this? [more inside]

I'm looking for an Android MP3 player that has both swipe/gesture controls AND the ability to easily star rate songs. I have an iPod Touch right now, and while I have a great swipe app, there's no way for apps to change star ratings in the API. If you know of a good Android-compatible MP3 player for Windows too, that would be great.

What am I doing wrong? iTunes is moving my music folders around causing havoc. [more inside]
XLD was working fine unless I have too many albums (such as 30 folders/albums apiece). I am not figuring out the interface on MAX for a batch conversion with several subfolders. I basically am using VBR to compress my music to smaller mp3 format. On XLD, there is Preferences-->Preserve directory structure-->subdirectory search depth "0", which makes it work on a small scale, like 10 folders or so, before crashing. So, if anyone can tell me what I am missing on MAX's menu or if they had the problem with XLD and fixed it, I am good to go. I like XLD's interface but it won't process my whole iTunes at a go.
As my friends and colleagues continue to move and diversify, I'd like to make a small, private site where we can share three- to five-song "mix tapes" of what we really love these days; ideally super easy from an interface perspective to create these mix tapes. What's my shortest path to goal? [more inside]

I have an album by The Cult called "Electric" that was in Unknown folder in iTunes. I moved it to the proper music group folder in iTunes "The Cult" where all their other albums are. BUT when I open iTunes, it won't show up with the search of The Cult or under their name. I can find particular tracks in iTunes, go an hit Play and it then asks for me to locate that song. There are other screw things going on (like some albums thrown into compilations, but I can probably fix that) but this is the most frustrating. Any ideas? Do I have to go buy Tune Up or some other application? (I am running the newest iTunes on an iMac w/ Snow Leopard)

CD Ripping - how to break tracks into smaller chunks? itunes or MediaMonkey. I recently got a copy of Stay Awake, a CD of new artists doing covers of old Disney songs, and I want to rip it to my computer. Several tracks are medleys - 3 or 4 songs running into each other as a single track. I know I can rip these individually, and then use a cutting program to make an individual copy of the songs, but is there an easier/automated way? [more inside]

I have a 2002-era problem: a big library of Mp3s, many ripped from physical CDs I own, some downloaded from iTunes, others left over from when I merged music collections with my then partner. They are completely disorganised. Some albums are incomplete, most lack album art, hundreds of individual songs are just kicking around in a big folder of their own. What's the best way to tame the mess? (This question has been asked before, but I imagine best solutions have changed since 2008). [more inside]

Does anyone know where my sister could get an mp3 of a cover version of "Lean on Me" from "The California Raisins Sing the Hit Songs" (1987). We had it on a tape as kids and she's making a nostalgia CD. Can't find it in itunes or amazon... Local libraries don't have it, CD is expensive. I tried a bit of filetype:mp3 searching and didn't turn up much...
I have 300gb of music, a house, several Mac laptops, a Mac G5, a router, two iphones, an ipad, and several external HDs where the music is stored. I would like to be able to play music anywhere in my house, control it wirelessly without the laptops and update libraries as well as all my devices with whatever I like anywhere in the house, without having to drag out the external USB HD to plug into various laptops like I do now. I'm willing to buy equipment to let this happen. Bonus if it lets me move movies onto a USB stick to plug into my nifty new tv. Details under the fold. [more inside]
