I want to set up my home stereo to stream music from my Windows box to a Raspberry Pi, which is then hooked up to my receiver. I think I have all the necessary parts, but what software do I use in which configuration to get it to work - MPD, or something else? More details inside. [more inside]
Is there an Android mp3 player that can crossfade songs without fading-in the incoming track? [more inside]
Ok, I have a 50 minute audio file, MP3 format, of one of a talk. Here's a short clip. It was recorded with an iPhone 5s in a hall, so the audio sounds distant and small. I'ld like to make this sound better, but have no idea how to do it. I've downloaded Audacity, any pointers on what I should do? Is there a particular effect I can apply to the entire file to make it better or is more involved work needed and if so, what?
I've often heard people rate different mp3 players with statements like "the iPods have really poor bass" or "the sound from a Sandisk is really tinny" or "metal sounds awesome on my Zune" (a hypothetical - this has never happened). Obviously speakers and earphones and the ripping / recording of the original track can have a difference. Is there audio difference between players beyond that? [more inside]
I need an mp3 player that I can control without being able to see it, using my fingers to feel and press the buttons. I currently have an iPod Shuffle, and I like it. The problem is that I need more storage. I'm looking for recommendations for mp3 players that have physical buttons for volume and skip/repeat, and 8+ GB of storage. Also, I need it to be available to buy new. I don't want to buy anything used. Thank you.
I've been asked to write summaries of some recordings of meetings. Problem is, whoever recorded it had the microphone in his shirt or his pocket or something, and there's impossible rustling preventing me from hearing what they're saying half the time! Especially when someone asks a question and they start explaining details. Is there any software I can run these sound files through to reduce some of that?
At some point in the mid-to-late 90s, I found an audio file (might even have been a .wav because MP3s weren't huge yet) that I'd like to find again. It was a fan edit of vocals from episodes of Star Trek:The Next Generation that strongly implied that Jean-Luc Picard and William Riker were lovers. [more inside]
I've been thinking about building this little Altoid tin headphone amp kit for listening with my Sennheiser 555s. Granted, the point of building the kit is, well, building the kit--but given the limitations of a (cheap) kit-built design and the fact that I listen exclusively to mp3s on my iPhone or Mac, will there be a perceptible improvement in sound from the cans? Is there more to the sound of my mp3s that I might not be hearing just driving the Sennheisers with the juice from the iPhone's or Mac's headphone jack that would merit stepping up the signal with the little amp?
Longest of long shots but does anybody recall hearing a rap/hiphop song on bandcamp with a Vanilla Ice sample? The beat may have had a bit of the "under pressure" bass line and some hand claps. About 3 times through the song they'd throw the vanilla ice sample in from "Ice Ice Baby" and right when the sample said ".....alright stop" the beat would cut out for a few seconds and then start back up.
When I burn a CD, some songs that sound fine in iTunes on my computer will inexplicably have between 3-20 seconds of 'silence' at the beginning, thus causing my car's CD player to skip them if I don't fast forward to the actual music...WTF? (do my best to give some Tech Specs inside!) [more inside]

I have a record player from the 1970s (a Garrard 2025 TC to be exact). How difficult (or risky) would it be to replace the sound input from the tape deck with a mini-jack input so that I can play MP3s (such as from an iPod) through the speakers? Is it just a matter of taking the back off, cutting wires and splicing them together?
_Other_ than Best Buy, how/where would one obtain a replacement car audio system near Durham, NC? I have no idea where to shop. I'm OK with installing it myself if it's not too involved, but installed is good too. [more inside]
XLD was working fine unless I have too many albums (such as 30 folders/albums apiece). I am not figuring out the interface on MAX for a batch conversion with several subfolders. I basically am using VBR to compress my music to smaller mp3 format. On XLD, there is Preferences-->Preserve directory structure-->subdirectory search depth "0", which makes it work on a small scale, like 10 folders or so, before crashing. So, if anyone can tell me what I am missing on MAX's menu or if they had the problem with XLD and fixed it, I am good to go. I like XLD's interface but it won't process my whole iTunes at a go.

Is there a service where I can submit articles or documents and have them read by a human being and get the result recorded as an mp3? I feel like such a service ought to exist somewhere, but I haven't had any luck finding one. Also, I'm not really interested in software that converts text to speech - it has to be read by a person.
