We're moving to a new house, and the people in that house are moving somewhere ... and someone is moving into our place, and probably someone is moving into the place they left... How long, typically, is one of these "chains" of moving, which are terminated by vacancies on each end?
Living in NYC is wearing me down... Or maybe I'm just slowing down... So I typed up a wish list of my dream hometown and thought I'd see whether any such place exists or even comes close to it. Ha. I realize my list is a bit silly since it's not completely thought out but boy I'd snap out of this major funk I've been in if such an area existed! ...or comes close to it? [more inside]
There is a possibility I may be getting a job that would require a relocation to southern Oregon (Medford/Ashland area) With a few exceptions, I've grown up and lived almost my entire life in the Chicago area. Can you help recommend a community or neighborhood? Details inside. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I were due to move in together (rental). I pulled to plug with a week to go. To rescue the relationship my girlfriend says I must first apologise to her parents. [more inside]
Hello, folks. My overthinking tendencies are working overtime as I try to navigate the next few months of my life (job/apartment change, travel?) amidst the fallout of the last few months of my life (end of long term relationship). I can't tell if I'm biting off more than I can chew or if I'm just standing in my own way. [more inside]
I'm moving to Las Vegas for a few years. I have a lot of experience living in tourist towns and dens of vice, but I've never lived in the desert. (I've been more of an ocean person.) Tell me what I need to know to get up to speed as a local in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the desert. What, from a local's point of view, separates Las Vegas from other cities? What did you wish someone had told you before you moved there? [more inside]
I've just recently come back from a week-long vacation to Los Angeles where I got to stay with my aunt and we had a great time seeing things and visiting places. The weather was amazing and I realistically thought it was the best vacation I have ever been on. She really wants me to move there. [more inside]
I'm choosing a place to move to. I'm single and mostly unconstrained, except by my finances, my personal preferences, and the boundaries of the United States. My heart votes San Francisco, but my bank account strenuously disagrees. Also, even though I'm from Iowa and am therefore accustomed to a wide range of temperatures, I happen to be depressed at the moment and so I must have sun and warmth. For the moment I'm stuck in a suburban apartment complex surrounded by highways, in a New England state that is becoming increasingly wintry. This is my nightmare. My finances are somewhat flexible, and I don't know exactly what I can afford, but for the purpose of this question, let's say I'm absolutely unwilling to pay more rent than $700 per month--and on top of that, I require a living space to myself, with no roommates. On the scale between nightmare and downtown San Francisco, how close to the latter can I get? [more inside]
We are making a local move (less than a mile) to a new house. When my husband and I moved into our current 4-bedroom house 14 years ago, it was the two of us coming from a small two-bedroom apartment with not much stuff - I packed it all, had movers, and it was done in a day. This is not that move. Please share your tips and tricks for moving a big, complicated household! [more inside]
I'm unexpectedly broke. How do I get cash to use now, and a way to pay tuition and living expenses soon -- with the least risk of ending up in this situation again? [more inside]

My son 23 and single is moving the Charleston SCfor his first real post college job. What advice would you give him for finding an apartment on a modest income and living in what looks like to be a very cool city? Thanks.
I'm planning a move from a shared apartment to my own space. In many ways I'll be starting fresh - I'll have to buy a new iron, shower curtain, etc. I'm trying to come up with a list of must-haves for day 1 and week 1- things that should be packed so that they are easily accessible, or should go on a list to be purchased the day of the move. Like toilet paper. By the time you realize you don't have it, it's too late. So far I have: toilet paper, hand soap, corkscrew, can opener, shower curtain. What else should be on this list?
I'm looking to rent a room in Brooklyn/Queens ASAP but I know very little about the city. I have a place to stay for a few weeks when I move down there on the 17th of this month but after that I'm pretty much on my own. How can I educate myself in the meantime so I know what to look for when I'm reading craisglist ads? Also, suggestions for good apartments based on what I'm looking for? [more inside]

I'm moving some things from a storage unit in Brooklyn to an apartment. I don't need a full scale moving service, just one of those Man-with-a-Van services you see advertised for $25 an hour or so on Craigslist or on lamp post flyers. Rather than take a risk on an unknown, can anyone recommend a guy they've used before? [more inside]
My landlord informed me last week that he's planning to sell my current flat in March and that I will have to move out sometime around then. That's not too big a deal except that I have been growing more dissatisfied in my current job due to a combination of politics and boredom. That said, there are very few jobs in my field in the local area and so moving job will also require moving house. Am I mad to try and do this by March? [more inside]
We just found out I'm pregnant. Yay! My husband also just started a new job, which is requiring us to move states sometime between now and early spring, which means I have to quit my job and we have to change insurance. I'm not sure how best to handle this. [more inside]
I'm trying to move to Brooklyn by December 1st. I have some money saved up, but I'll need to find a part time coffeeshop job (4 days a week) to support myself while I intern the other 2-3 days. Right now I live in Boston and I have no clue how to go about looking for a job from afar. Considering that I may have to go on several interviews before being offered a position, that I currently have a part time job here so I can't be staying in NY for long periods of time while I look, that I have no friends in the city to stay with and that my funds are limited, what should I do? I'm moving to a new apartment, and looking for a place that will be quiet and peaceful. I've found an apartment I like—based on the description on Craigslist, at least—and I just drove by in advance of the open house. The market where I live, in the Bay Area, is so tight right now that I'll probably have to apply immediately at the open house if I want a chance of getting it. When I drove by, I noticed that the house across the street was literally falling apart-- the roof had holes that were visible from the street, shingles were falling off, and the whole thing looked like it might eventually collapse. I saw someone go inside, so it looks like people are living there. The rest of the block looks ordinary enough. Having never lived near a place that looked so bad, I'm just wondering if there's anything I should be worried about. Other than the fact that it looks bad, and I feel bad for the people who have to live there (and for the house itself, which clearly was once very nice), does it matter that this place is across the street?

I'm a late 20's native New Yorker - grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for most of my life. I've lived in San Diego for the past year. Lovely place, but it's not for me. Got a job offer in San Francisco and I'm excited and ready to make the move. I've always loved my visits to San Francisco and its walkability, culture, food, shopping, and diversity have always made it comparable to New York in my mind. I love New York, but I don't want to move to San Francisco expecting it will be just like living in New York. I've already noticed some big differences that I embrace (and some I dislike.) People who have lived in both cities (especially as a young person): what are some of the differences you found between life in New York and life in San Francisco? Thanks!
We're going to move from the southern part of Alameda County to somewhere between Martinez and Oakley in eastern/northern Contra Costa County. We have a few complications (of course!) and not much moving experience. Can you tell us how to plan? [more inside]
I have accepted a job in Auburn, WA and need to relocate to the Seattle area within the next month. What are some good neighborhoods to look for rentals for a late-20s couple (no kids)? We are hoping to stay under $1600 for a 2-bedroom, preferring a townhouse or small house over an apartment. We need to be somewhat central since my husband will be looking for a job and would potentially need to commute in a different direction. [more inside]

I dropped off all my possessions (pretty much everything I own) in boxes at a local storage facility in the UK (in awful circumstances - details below) and failed to get a receipt, only a verbal agreement that they would do my paperwork by email, and deliver my boxes in a month's time. I then had to leave the country. Four weeks later, I've yet to receive any invoice or confirmation. I've called and emailed several times and have been told in a genial but rather brusque way that they will get in touch, but so far no email. I'm heading back to the UK soon and want to get my boxes delivered this weekend. Still no invoice or receipt. I am FREAKING OUT that they are being so flaky. I am having panicky visions of them losing or selling all my things, and me showing up in the UK with basically the clothes on my back and nothing else. Have I made a terrible mistake? Is there anything I can do? Apologies in advance for long freaking-out-ness below the jump. [more inside]

Hi all, I am moving from Cambridge to Providence on Sunday morning. I'll be picking up a 16 foot truck from Penske at 436 Riverside Ave in Medford at around 8:30am that morning, and driving it to Harvard Square, probably to Linden St between Mass Ave and Mt. Auburn. And once it's loaded, on to Providence. I need help knowing whether I need a permit, and about the best way to drive the truck through the streets of Medford, Somerville and Cambridge. [more inside]

I moved into a new house about a week ago. Everything seemed great. Good, quiet location, central location, etc. etc. But, I've come to realize that the folks living across the street are bad news. They're extremely loud, vulgar, and generally up to no good. [more inside]

I owned a beautiful new home for seven years and had to sell it this year due to practical factors such as distance to work for my wife, daycare, and so on. I am struggling with a kind of grief about it. The new owners move in today and last night I had a farewell party with some friends at the house which helped, but I stayed there all night taking photos and crying and trying to memorize every inch of it. I'm talking literally crying on the front lawn and feeling like I couldn't breathe. [more inside]
My husband and I live in Boston. As part of its annual employee survey, his employer is asking whether he would be willing to relocate. The most likely locations would be facilities in southern New Hampshire or northern Rhode Island. It would be theoretically possible to stay where we live and he would reverse commute to those locations, but based on past experience, it would be over an hour each way. So, if his job were moved, we might relocate—and so we turn to you, MeFi, for your perspectives on those locations and whether we’d be happy living there or nearby. [more inside]

Wizards of Hive, Before I buy that 90" couch from a friend, how can I make sure I'll be able to get it up my L-shaped stairs? Sure, there are a lot of variables. But is there a tool or methodology for figuring this out ahead of time (presuming I know the depth and height of the couch too)? I don't think I have the cardboard to build a mockup. This couch is 50 miles away and can't be returned. Thanks!
I'm helping someone move from Queens, NYC to Bolivia, and I'd appreciate recommendations on reliable packers/movers that have international moving experience. This would be a small apartment's worth of clothing, kitchen items, TVs, etc, but no furniture. The largest item would be an upright piano that, ideally, could be packed by the same company but, otherwise would be separately crated and shipped with the household effects. In the event that no great int'l movers come to mind, recommendations for a great packer and a great international freight forwarding company would be appreciated.

I absolutely need to move. I'm feeling very stuck in my father's suburban Texas home. I've been in Colorado for the last week and I don't want to leave. I need some guidance, I'm willing to make a lot of sacrifices to relocate to Colorado but I don't know how to make it happen. [more inside]
