Is it really more of a liability to pack my own boxes?

I'm looking for moving/shipping companies to send a couple of boxes of books & clothes from Australia to the USA (as I'm relocating). While requesting quotes, one company strongly suggested that I hire them to pack my things for me as apparently US Customs get suspicious if the boxes were packed by the individual mover (me, in this case) rather than by a professional. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else and the US Customs website hasn't addressed this. What's going on? [more inside]

Suggestions on managing underwater mortgage and cross-country move

Due to a new job, my family and I (wife, 2 kids, 2 cats) need to relocate from the DC area to Oregon in the near term future, ideally before the start of the Oregon school year (approximately September 1st). The wrinkle: how to deal with our currently-somewhat-underwater house in the Maryland suburbs of DC. [more inside]

How can I want to make plans

I have social anxiety that psychs me out about making plans. I moved to a new city about seven months ago and still haven't seen old friends and extended family members that I really should see. Even though I enjoy hanging out with them, thinking about hanging out with them can feel like a stressful chore. What's the easiest and quickest way to get rid of hundreds of books?

I'm moving in about ten days, I'm disabled, and my mother (who is in her mid-sixties) is here helping me pack. I've got four of five hundred books, mostly paperbacks and mostly genre fiction, about which I'm finally being sensible and eliminating. The problem we're having is that it's almost as much trouble to get rid of these as it would have been to pack them. [more inside]

What to do about surprise cockroaches on day 1 of our lease?

We just signed a year long lease on a very nice house but haven't moved in yet. The lease started on Tuesday, the checks are cashed by the landlord, and the walkthrough in the bright light of day was fine. The landlord assured us that there were no bug problems (except termites in the past, which have been treated). However, yesterday evening when we were moving the first load of stuff to the new house, we spotted multiple cockroaches (outside, but against the house/diving into cracks in the foundation). NOOOO!!! How to proceed when we would have not signed the lease under these conditions? [more inside]

How hard is it to drive with a hitch?

I was asked to help a friend move. I'd be driving a small two door hatchback. Attached would be a U-Haul U-Box hitched on to the back (See here for details). I have never driven anything with a hitch on the back. I would need to drive it 4 times, each time it would be about 15 miles or so. It would help save a lot of money if i could do this. How hard is it to drive with something big hitched behind? Should I help out? Any thoughts, or tips on the situation would be very appreciated.
