After a year of therapy, intense self-exploration, and work on myself, I've met a fantastic man. Complication: I'm moving. [more inside]
I am flipping out about moving to Los Angeles. How do I not flip out? [more inside]
I'm stuck. My wife and I have been married for a little over a year, and there's a looming issue I haven't been able to shake off since the engagement: being close to my home and family conflicts with my wife's goals and what's good for our marriage. [more inside]
I owned a beautiful new home for seven years and had to sell it this year due to practical factors such as distance to work for my wife, daycare, and so on. I am struggling with a kind of grief about it. The new owners move in today and last night I had a farewell party with some friends at the house which helped, but I stayed there all night taking photos and crying and trying to memorize every inch of it. I'm talking literally crying on the front lawn and feeling like I couldn't breathe. [more inside]
My husband and I live in Boston. As part of its annual employee survey, his employer is asking whether he would be willing to relocate. The most likely locations would be facilities in southern New Hampshire or northern Rhode Island. It would be theoretically possible to stay where we live and he would reverse commute to those locations, but based on past experience, it would be over an hour each way. So, if his job were moved, we might relocate—and so we turn to you, MeFi, for your perspectives on those locations and whether we’d be happy living there or nearby. [more inside]
Yet another "should we breakup" question [more inside]
Wizards of Hive, Before I buy that 90" couch from a friend, how can I make sure I'll be able to get it up my L-shaped stairs? Sure, there are a lot of variables. But is there a tool or methodology for figuring this out ahead of time (presuming I know the depth and height of the couch too)? I don't think I have the cardboard to build a mockup. This couch is 50 miles away and can't be returned. Thanks!
I'm helping someone move from Queens, NYC to Bolivia, and I'd appreciate recommendations on reliable packers/movers that have international moving experience. This would be a small apartment's worth of clothing, kitchen items, TVs, etc, but no furniture. The largest item would be an upright piano that, ideally, could be packed by the same company but, otherwise would be separately crated and shipped with the household effects. In the event that no great int'l movers come to mind, recommendations for a great packer and a great international freight forwarding company would be appreciated.
I'm moving across the country! What resources should I use to make friends in the Portland, OR area? More details inside... [more inside]
I absolutely need to move. I'm feeling very stuck in my father's suburban Texas home. I've been in Colorado for the last week and I don't want to leave. I feel that this is a place where I can be healthy and take control of my life. It's so beautiful. But I'm overwhelmed. I need some guidance, I'm willing to make a lot of sacrifices to relocate to Colorado but I don't know how to make it happen. [more inside]
I'm (almost certainly) moving to Vancouver for grad school, starting this September. I've never moved before, other than college and that was only an hour away from my hometown. What do I need to know about renting an apartment, getting my iPhone to work and everything else? [more inside]
I've been living in Brooklyn for 5 years now, and feeling the associated pains of longterm city life. Some stuff has gone on in my professional life recently that has got me wondering if I would enjoy living somewhere else. And being in my late twenties with all of my peers getting married and having kids, life change is all around me and I feel like I'm standing still. Can you guys help me brainstorm about where I might want to live? [more inside]

I'm starting a new job as of next week in the Ville and my lease will be up in my current apartment as of the end of August. Need advice on where to look for houses for rent and also what there is to do -- specifically good bookstores, museums, movie theaters, other wacky stuff, etc. [more inside]
I finally moved out of my abusive household, and I am proud of myself to finally be independent now. But I moved to Seattle on a whim, and after being here for 2 months, I feel as if it's not the right fit for me. I want to move to my dream city, New York. My sublet term is up at the end of August, and I have to move, either to somewhere else in Seattle or elsewhere, either way. But I have some complicating factors, and I am not sure if I can make it work. But I really want to make it work. Can you help me figure out what my options are? Many thanks for any help! I'm making a list of videos that create a very particular kind of frisson: the feeling that the world is a big place filled with experiences to have and explorations to take part in. Have some good examples inside - would love more. [more inside]
Hi. I dated my ex for three years and we broke up a little over a year ago. At first I was very hurt and depressed, missed him terribly, was counting on getting back together, and couldn't imagine ever being attracted to or dating anyone again. Now I don't miss him at all and have no desire to be with him, and no longer compare every guy I meet to him. I thought I was over everything, but then last week I found out he's finally dating someone else and I can't help but feel hurt, like I've been replaced. I keep thinking about what she's like and why he likes her even though I do not want to be with him at all. To make matters worse my ex and I work together, so it's possible we might all run into each other, and that makes me want to vomit. I feel like I'm moving ten steps backward in my healing process. How do I proceed?
I need to ship a bunch of books internationally; is there a better option than USPS M-bags? [more inside]

Asking for a family member: can anyone suggest a specific moving company (or somewhere to look for a reputable moving company) to help move stuff from the Bronx and Jersey City to York, PA? Thanks!
I live in a pretty nice, large modern loft. It has all sorts of furnishings: new appliances, garbage disposal, in-unit washer and dryer, new bathroom, dish washer, underground parking. I'm thinking of moving into an older building that has charm, but none of these things. Will the lack of these luxuries make me go crazy? Has anyone done this, and not regretted it? [more inside]
If I'm paying for movers/loaders that are recommended by a pod/cube/box-based moving company, can I get my things insured? [more inside]
I'm currently studying law in a UK university, and am contemplating taking a semester off beginning August 2014 (about 4 months) to work and travel. The plan right now is to move to another city/country and work and stay there, and on the top of my list at the moment is Chicago. How viable is this? [more inside]

My septuagenerian parents are moving about a van load of their belongs (computers, television, clothes, kitchen dishes, etc.) from coast to coast. Ideally, the company hired would come to their house and respectfully pack everything and then ship it across country where, once again, they would unpack everything. Do you know of such a service? (Related, but not exactly: do you recommend a service for moving a car – vehicle – cross country?) Thank you!
We are looking to live near the water and have tried Miami and LA and are now on the shoreline of Ct. The only problem is; we can't afford to buy a house here and the winter is a bit of a deal breaker. Thinking of moving to the West coast of Florida for the water and the warmth and would love to hear anyone's experience of this area. We have thought of Sarasota and would be open to other cities or large towns. We are both active, still working, (self employed) very liberal and interested in great food and a community of interesting people. We couldn't be somewhere where everyone is retired. Any thoughts?
We're in the process of moving across town. We sold our house and close on it mid July, but we don't close on the new place until the end of that month. This leaves us 'homeless' for two weeks. My family will be staying with my parents for that time, no big deal. The question is what to do with all of our stuff? What's the best way to store a house full of stuff for a short time? [more inside]
I am looking for a couple of people to help someone pack and clean a room in preparation for moving. Little heavy lifting required, just need a couple of strong bodies to take direction for a few hours. Is there a resource for finding (hopefully inexpensive) day labor in the Watertown/Belmont/Waltham area? Out here in California, for example, I would look into a Job Center, but am not coming up with a similar resource in the Boston area. Thank you for any information!
I last asked a question about moving or J-school. Most answers encouraged the former. I do want to move now, but should I relocate if doing so at the optimal time would mean I'd be at my first job less than a year? [more inside]
We’re moving to Edinburgh in the fall. We’re terribly excited, and have dozens of questions, so please answer as many or few as you feel like. Our special snowflake details are inside. [more inside]

This summer, I'll be moving 2000 miles across the country for a new job. I have to hire movers to load my things into my pod, but I'd like to save money and pack things myself. But that's difficult because I have a degenerative joint condition that makes even simple things like standing, leaning forward, or doing the dishes very difficult. [more inside]

Hi, I am considering moving back to London after over a decade in NYC. I have a few questions that I am curious about. But after just typing and erasing them- I am just going to ask how other people have found the differences between living and working in (not visiting!) the two cities. [more inside]
I'm an academic, and am moving across the country (SF to Boston) for a one year gig. The new university is unfortunately not paying my moving expenses (nor a very high salary), and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my stuff there. I'll be driving with a station wagon full of stuff, which should be fine for most of my stuff. But I'm not sure *all* of the boxes will fit, and I have a piano and couple of pieces of furniture that I would like to, but don't have to, bring. More below. [more inside]
