Where to buy a house in Baltimore?

Asking for my wonderful 30-year-old lady friend. She's moving to Baltimore in a few months and would like to buy a house there. She would like to live somewhere between Hunt Valley and downtown Baltimore, she's okay with either a city or suburban feel, and her budget is $160k. Safety is her top concern, and she's having trouble getting an accurate sense of how safe particular neighborhoods are from her realtor and her research. Can you recommend specific Baltimore neighborhoods that are safe for a young female homebuyer? [more inside]

Black Lab Vs. Grey Tabby moving-in-together adventure.

My partner and I are moving across the country in a few months. We will be sharing a house and we both have beloved asshole pets we really really want to keep. I have a seven year old indoor/outdoor grey tabby and she has a 7 year old black labrador. I feel like it would be a big help to get them acquainted before the move, but I am not sure how to proceed. The time is drawing nearer and I need some help with this. Details (and picture link) on the flap! [more inside]

Yeehaw, we are moving to Austin!

My husband and I are relocating from Philadelphia to Austin. We are headed there this weekend to scope out neighborhoods and get a handle of the city. We plan to move this summer and are interested in hearing about apartment locator services and general tidbits about the city. We are an early 30's couple, no kids, are will both be affiliated with UT Austin. We would like to live in a highrise building downtown or loft close to campus. Have you done this? Do you have building recommendations? This is what we know so far: traffic on I-35 is horrendous, summers are brutally hot, and housing prices are high... but the city is awesome! We want to get excited about the move -- tell us where to set down roots so we can explore the new city!

Where is a good small city with decent weather for happening couple?

We are looking for a small city without cold winters that has a large body of water - no inland towns for us- and is vibrant, cultured and intelligent. We have lived in LA, NY and Miami and are now in Durham, Nc - finding it too woodsy and land locked and way to hot in the summer here. We both work and are in our early sixties.

moving to a new city for a "girlfriend"

I met this girl from an online dating site from Peru, and we have been chatting by text and on skype for seven months. Now she has moved to Toronto in Canada for school, but I live in Boston, and we agreed to do a long distance relationship for some time while I look for jobs in Canada or Buffalo, NY (which is close to Toronto). I only know this girl through 7 months of skype and texting, and she came to visit me one weekend recently and we got to hang out, and we had a really good time together. But I am having doubts about moving to a brand new city for someone I hardly know but I am still attracted to her, and as far as I know she has a really nice personality. Would it be worth it to leave everything behind to move to Toronto just to be close to her? The other thing is that I really like Toronto as a city, and I have a close friend who lives there.

Company's been taxing me in the wrong state. What are the implications?

About a month ago I moved from State A to State B to work in my company's new office. Even though I updated my location with my company and our payroll system, I've still been having only State A taxes withheld, and no State B taxes. Since I'm living and working in State B, I should only have State B taxes withheld as of my move. Turns out that, due to an oversight, the subsidiary of my company that I officially work for isn't yet registered in State B. They're going to fix it on the payroll side, but what implications should I be aware of? Does it matter whether it's fixed by end of year? More details below the fold: [more inside]

Should I Move to TX?

I'm in CA and my company has folded. My research shows that moving to TX would be a good plan because, running the numbers, there is a reasonable amount of daily postings for positions I am suitable for across the TX metro job markets, and house prices are considerably less (read: affordable) compared to CA metro areas. So it all makes reasonable sense except for this: I have no emotional drive to relocate there. [more inside]
