This is actually more like a two part question so bear with me. We are very likely moving to the bay area in the near future and could use some guidance. Also, we are heading there in about 10 days as my wife has never been and I want to make sure she falls in love with it.

The Short: I'm a single young adult with a college degree and student loan debt. I live in a sterile small city with limited job prospects. I want to move out and get an entry-level or temporary job in a coastal U.S. city (NYC, LA, SF, Seattle). Please walk me through the logistics and help me devise a plan, as well as offer any advice you have on making it on your own in a new city (essentially, how to be an independent, self-sufficient adult).

You've been offered the same position with the same company in your choice of two offices: Seattle or San Francisco. The salary is the same in both positions but, due to a cost of living adjustment, the pay is higher in SF. What are some of the factors you'd consider in deciding where to go? Which would you choose and why?

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions:

Please help a new grad move to San Francisco. I will probably arrive on June 1 and start working June 10, and I have $1500 for the whole move in process. Where do I stay while I'm apartment hunting? A hotel is very expensive and a hostel is pretty cramped. I could probably stay on a friend's couch but are there any other reasonable options for 1 month stays?

Moving to San Francisco for work in June, when should we look for an apartment? We can fly down for a weekend in April or May, or we can look once we get there and stay at a hotel/hostel in the meantime. What's going to be the best way to find a good place? We want to live in the city.

My fiance and I just graduated from Purdue and we're preparing for moving to California... him to San Francisco (job at Dreamworks) and me to Los Angeles (grad school at UCLA). Pre-dreamworks-job-offer, we thought we would both be in LA, so all the problems/considerations for the move pretty much just doubled. Not to mention that when it is all said and done, we're going to be doing the long-distance thing for at least a year. I know that we're capable people and can get through this just fine together, but I'm kind of overwhelmed at the moment and could use some advice.

Does anyone know the San Francisco private school system? Want a seriously engaging and academic (also nurturing, non-competitive) school for my (currently) 3rd and K boys, can't find any online guides worth anything, don't have many contacts in the city. We've been public school people all our lives but I don't think it's going to work with this move.

I'm moving from NYC to SF in June, to take a job at UCSF. I'm a little daunted by the prospect of yet another transcontinental move, so I thought I'd just ask for general advice, as I'm not even sure I know the right questions to ask. What do you know that you think I ought to know about moving cross-country to SF?

BAY AREA FILTER: Hey everyone... one of my best friends and his wife are moving to San Francisco, and I offered to help them figure out where they may want to move. If you live there, or have lived there, where would you recommend? They'd like an active lifestyle, and safe. Aside from that, he's making 50k and needs easy access to Mission Bay for work. They also really want public transit.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
