Should I change my job and my country of residence?

I am facing a huge question that I don't know how to navigate and don't feel like I can talk to anyone about. The short story is that I have a precarious-feeling academic job in the Midwestern U.S. and applied for a job in an English-speaking country in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, I found out that I am on the short list for the job. And now I'm just not sure what to do. [more inside]

New Job, Short Timeline

My landlord informed me last week that he's planning to sell my current flat in March and that I will have to move out sometime around then. That's not too big a deal except that I have been growing more dissatisfied in my current job due to a combination of politics and boredom. That said, there are very few jobs in my field in the local area and so moving job will also require moving house. Am I mad to try and do this by March? [more inside]

Where are the best places in LA to live with a family?

You're considering a move to Los Angeles for a job in Irvine. You and your (stay-at-home) wife are both in your early 30s, and have two young (under two years old) children. You were raised in the midwest, and prefer the suburbs. You want to live in an area that has lots of other young families and easy access to eating and shopping and preschools and other things like that. You don't want to spend more than 30 minutes or so commuting. You want to spend about $3,000 per month on rent for a 3+ bedroom single-family-home (or condo, you suppose). What areas of Los Angeles do you focus on?

Is the grass ALWAYS greener?

I hate my job. HATE my job. I've worked here for 21 years, doing soul crushing work for the state court system. I haven't had a pay raise in seven years, not even a cost of living raise, have had my benefits scaled back and am looking at an even greater workload due to potential layoffs for my fellow employees unlucky enough to have been here as long as I have. Is there any chance that I can pick up stakes, move to Los Angeles, and hope to find a job paying me something comparable to what I currently make? Need help moving from Kalamazoo, MI to Minneapolis, MN. Advice

I recently got a job that pays well with Medtronic (contract first, good signs for the future). I'll be paid handsomely and I need to start work on April 1st 2013 (or sooner). I have an apartment in Kalamazoo, MI until 5/01/2013. This is a 10 hour drive move, I have slightly less than 2.5 weeks to make it happen. What's the recommended way to do this, some combination of measuring, U-haul, gas cost, driving out there to check places out, figuring what to take, getting rid of the other stuff.... All that. I'm thinking Pods.com (based on Ask.Mefi post searches, along with friends and family, as of now). Input? [more inside]

How do I apply for a job for two months from now?

I'm relocating in 2 months and currently doing the job search. How do I handle current job postings which do not specify a start date: apply anyway and state my arrival time (or don't mention it)? Is there anything I can do in the application/interview process to increase the likelihood that an employer might hold a position for me, or how do I broach the subject? Is it worth applying to a job that has a start date earlier than my arrival "just in case"? [more inside]

Should my girlfriend and I move from NYC to Seattle? ComplicatedFilter: I'd have my current job relocated, she would not.

My (wonderful, amazing, perfect-for-me) girlfriend and I have been together 9 months (though we've known each other for several years), and are currently living together. Some background: I was born and raised in NYC, she's a transplant from Wisconsin (but went to college in Vassar). I'm 31, she's 28. Recently, my job has become frustrating and monotonous. Some of this is because the bulk of my department is located in Seattle. They recognize this, and have mentioned to me that it may be possible to relocate to the Seattle office and adjust my position. The gf and I are currently discussing the opportunity. [more inside]
