So. I need to move and live with my best friend. We are looking to move west in the USA. She suggested southern Arizona and I suggests Oregon. We thought Cali might be good, but are open to pretty much anywhere.

My husband and I will be leaving our current town in about a year and a half, and we’re starting to think about where we might like to go next. We have several requirements (explained inside), and I’ll probably be posting questions about this more than once! We are thinking about taking a couple of weeks to explore some cities in California this spring or summer, and I’m hoping some of you can suggest some California towns that might be a good fit for us so we can start planning the exploratory trip.

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions:

Where in CA should my mom move? I live in Los Angeles, but have been here less than a year and in a PhD school bubble at that, so I really don't know much about the rest of the state.
Here's what she's look for:

I may have an opportunity to move out west from my native New Jersey to California. A friend of my father's may offer me a position with his company in supply chain out there where I could but my Information Science/Management degree to good use. It's a scary proposition to pick up and move out...has anyone out there done this? More details inside.

I have a car that has been sitting parked for 6 months in Nashville, TN and the tags have expired. I will be going this week to drive it to my new place in San Jose, CA. I know that I will have to pay a few hundred bucks to register it in CA when I get there and would like to avoid paying to register for a full year in TN when I only need valid pates for a few days.
I've done some searching on the TN website and can't find any information if there is any sort of temporary tag (even 10 days is more than enough) that would get me through. Does anyone have experience with this? Any ideas on what my options might be?
