I'm moving to Washington, DC for a new job that is a huge step up for me. I'd like to have a studio apartment lined up for January 1st and I will have a week to intensively look for a place before my job starts on Dec. 21st. What are some neighborhoods, tips and resources what would be helpful for me to find my perfect place in such a short turn around? My main goal is super convenient car-free living and commuting. Twenty-Something Gay couple making the leap to a new city with no connections and potentially limited job opportunities, in a down economy too! The man I'm in love with has fallen in love with Seattle, and after visiting and experiencing the mild climate, nice people, great public transit and relaxed attitude, I've grown partial to the city also. Sort of like a question I asked before, but not quite as whimsical. I've reached the end of the lease with the apartment my wife and I live in. It's up as of February 1st and that's perfect, because we'd like to be out by then. The problem is that they're asking for a 60 day written notice and we just gave them notice today. In the last 7 days, Mrs. Bageena's father died and while we were out of town for the funeral, someone broke into our apartment and robbed us. [more inside]

Me and the significant other are moving out in about 2 weeks time to our first 1 bedroom apartment. Rent is looking about 1/3 of total income including water, gas and trash (not bad for Southern California) and most of our major furniture/appliance costs seems to be taken care of already. Is there anything we should consider, highlight, or otherwise be aware of before we live the life of paupers?

Is there a website that has advice, information, facts, and maybe even a forum for people who are moving out on their own for the first time? Not to college, but getting an apartment or house for the first time? As an example, it might have everything from tips on dealing with a landlord to how to do your laundry. (I know how to do those things, just an example.)
