my move out date is after my lease expires. how bad is it?

I rented a new apartment with a lease starting on September 1st. My current apartment's lease ends 8/31. I foolishly thought moving out on 9/1 was standard practice. My landlord assures me it is not. Now what? [more inside]

Suburban Exploration--The Most Dangerous Adventure

I moved out to the 'burbs recently. I've never lived in the suburbs before, and stately Haddock Manor (Marlinspike) is in a suburb I visited only once before touring my home and making an offer. How does someone go about exploring the suburbs? I'm only used to cities. [more inside]

I want out of this house! How soon can I move?

I have to move soon, and I've found a place that's available starting this Saturday. My question is this: how much time should I budget for packing/moving? I have a small amount of furniture as well as the usual clothes and other belongings. I've packed about half of my stuff, and will pack the rest on Friday and Saturday, with the intention of moving on Sunday. Is this feasible? [more inside]

Telling landlord we're looking elsewhere, but holding onto our place?

I have rented my current place for over a year and according to our lease, am now month to month. I want to look elsewhere, and tell my (very chill) landlord in case I want to put him as a reference. But in the end I'm not sure if/when I'll move (only if a better place materializes) so I also don't want him to decide to find new tenants and give me 30 days notice. How would you deal with the landlord? [more inside]

Can I make it in the Boston IT job market?

For my own personal reasons, I would like to move to Boston. The one obvious catch: I need to make money in order to do so. I'm in software support. It's a small company, so only one support tier before issues go to engineering. Lots of .NET and SQL Server work. I've been at it a few years. I have no idea how my skillset would measure up in a big city full of some of the brainiest people on the planet. Can I survive and thrive in Boston? [more inside]

Shipping a significant quantity of books from US to UK. How? How much?

I'm moving soon (UK Home Office and God willing) from the US to England. I will be there for roughly 3 years, give or take, and am hoping that I can have a portion of my substantial amount of books there with me. Previous suggestions on shipping indicate USPS M-bags as the go-to choice, but USPS no longer offers anything but air service on media bags, pushing the cost to around $175 for 44 lbs. This is more than I want to spend. Ideas? [more inside]

Moving Canada to US; UPS or Fedex?

We're about to move from Toronto to San Francisco. (Yay!) But we have to move our things. (Nightmare!) We live pretty lightly, and aren't moving furniture, so we're thinking the best thing to do is ship a big pile of boxes using UPS or FedEx. Any thoughts on which is preferable? I have the impression that FedEx can be a bit nightmarish when borders are involved, but have zero experience with UPS international shipments.

Cross-country driving, the pleasant way!

I've enjoyed the discussion on this post about America's worst highways, but I have a particular interest in seeing the other side of the coin - I'm going to be driving from DC to San Francisco in early October (in a minivan full of everything I own that is too delicate/bulky/valuable to send by mail--it's not much but it's not nothing) and I want to know: what route is the least maddening? At least, which parts have better options than others? I'm going to take about a week at it (hoping to not do more than 7-8 hours of driving a day). Bonus points for suggesting ideal places (not far from the interstate) to start the day with an ~hourlong bike ride.

Stay for love or move for money?

I have a possible job opportunity (and similar ones in the future, if I don't take this one) at a prestigious institution in my field that would allow me to live a comfortable middle-class life, pay my debts, and raise a family or own a house someday. I love my current job, relationship, home, and community, but I'm stuck at a pay level that's barely adequate to cover my bills each month and that's unlikely to increase much over the course of my career.
