International Pet Transport Logistics Help Needed

I'll be moving from Korea to Arizona in December and wondering how to also bring my pet hamster to the US. What kind of paperwork do I need to be prepared for? Do airlines take hamsters? My preliminary research seems to point to probably not but maybe if you negotiate well? But then how do you avoid the cargo bay? What with the sensitive and loaded nature of transporting animals and scammers on the internet, are there any reputable international pet transport services that people have had good experiences with that also takes hamsters? How do you move beyond betrayal?

Hello metafilter, A few months back, I had a break-up with a friend. At the time, I believed we were very close, and I turned to her because I was very sick, needed help, and couldn't find it anywhere else. Instead of offering help or sympathy, she instead sent me a "go away till you're better" letter two days later. It's broken my heart, and I can't seem to move past it. [more inside]

cleaners first or packers?

Next to "I am shit at house cleaning" is the phrase "I am shit at packing and moving" - unfortunately the house is a disaster. Dust and dirty bunnies all around. I am also packing up three generations worth of stuff, so the amount of stuff that needs to be dealt with is pretty dense. Who do I hire first? Housecleaners to clean around the stuff, or packers to pack the stuff up? [more inside]

Advice Wanted for Move to Des Moines, Iowa

My wife and I are new empty nesters, and are considering moving to Des Moines, Iowa. What is it like to live there? What are the pluses and minuses? We are hoping to find a friendly, welcoming community with some larger city amenities. Ideally, we'd also find other non religious, politically moderate-to-liberal folks. Will we find it there?

Where do the ex-New Yorkers go?

I've lived in New York City for many years and am ready to move somewhere else. I haven't traveled that widely within the US though, so I suspect I'm unfamiliar with a lot of cities that might be wonderful places to live but not obvious vacation destinations. I'd love to hear from people - particularly people who have liked living in NYC - who are happy where they live and why! [more inside]

"Love it or leave it?" I think I will!

My home state is rife with problems, and it's government is corrupt and incompetent. As a public employee, I don't feel safe trusting my retirement pension to a state legislature that consistently relies on stopgap measures to avoid deficit spending and lacks the political will/intelligence to solve the issues that will most certainly arrive when even more Baby Boomers apply for Medicaid benefits (which are partially paid for by the state). I've decided to look for greener pastures. Please help me identify some areas I should investigate for a future relocation. [more inside]

How can I persuade the movers to bring my delayed stuff?!

I just moved cross-country to start a new job as assistant professor, and the movers (United Van Lines) I hired (one of three the university allowed me to choose from) are running more than three weeks later than expected.
