"Love it or leave it?" I think I will!

My home state is rife with problems, and it's government is corrupt and incompetent. As a public employee, I don't feel safe trusting my retirement pension to a state legislature that consistently relies on stopgap measures to avoid deficit spending and lacks the political will/intelligence to solve the issues that will most certainly arrive when even more Baby Boomers apply for Medicaid benefits (which are partially paid for by the state). I've decided to look for greener pastures. Please help me identify some areas I should investigate for a future relocation. [more inside]

Near, far, wherever you are: parental proximity

Geographic distance from my parents will not be the only factor I'll weigh when deciding where next to live, but it will be one of them. How might distance affect my relationship with my parents? How has it, in your own experience? What changes as I zoom out from living in the same city, to the same metro area, or to merely the same coast? [more inside]

San Jose, CA- Apparently not the coolest place to live.

I'm likely moving to California at the start of October. Recently, the location has tentatively changed to San Jose. I don't want this to happen, so please convince me that San Jose is the worst place ever, or give me some reasons for why it's really not that bad. [more inside]

Help me establish California residency without a permanent home address.

I'm moving from the East Coast to Los Angeles in the next few weeks. It is intended to be a permanent move, but I will be staying at an Airbnb for the first couple of months while I apartment-hunt, etc. In studying the California DMV guidelines here I see that I will need to provide a residential address to print on the license (even if I use a PO Box for my mail.) Is there any way around this? [more inside]

Favor from friend, maybe doesn't want it to be transactional, now what?

How can I persuade the movers to bring my delayed stuff?!

I just moved cross-country to start a new job as assistant professor, and the movers (United Van Lines) I hired (one of three the university allowed me to choose from) are running more than three weeks later than expected. They picked up on July 15th and were supposed to to deliver between July 18th and August 2nd. First the stuff was going to arrive on July 25th, then August 7th. But truckers keep on not bringing it. They now want to containerize my household belongings and deliver them on August 13th, and they said "it could be a long time" before my piano arrives. How can I make them bring it to me faster? Moved 3000 mi for a new job. Spouse hates it here. What should we do?

After moving from one corner of the country to the opposite corner 3 months ago, selling one house and buying another and spending $8000 on the move, we need to not live here because my spouse is absolutely miserable and staying will put considerable strain on our marriage and negatively impact our mental health (his in particular).
