Movie trivia - killer! Trying to recall a 1960s-ish (?) movie about a knock-out female British hair dresser who decides to improve herself and take continuing-ed university classes - very toff university, very toff professor (possibly Donald Sutherland or Peter O'Toole - except I can't seem to find anything similar on their IMDB career lists). Very along the lines of 'To Sir With Love,' (shot similar also) but focusing on the female's growth from bleached blonde bimbo to an academic over-achiever. Arg, this is killing me. Anyone remember this flick?

What's the music in the (International #1) trailer for The World's Fastest Indian
? It's the guitar riff that begins right after the line, "It's what we're here for"--cut to a shot of a red vehicle speeding down the Bonneville Salt Flat. It's used again after the zoom-in on Anthony Hopkins and the VO, "Burt Monro's not ready to finish yet, I'll tell you that mate." Quicktime: small

Name That Film: Black-n-white, I think, maybe set in Prohibition era (U.S.), a comedy about a big, good-natured (but not so bright) fellow who finds work as a loan collector and then somehow gets involved with polticians, finally ending up as a puppet mayor or somesuch (which of course doesn't last long.) Good fun and very cynical (especially for its time.) T'anks!

I'm interested in hearing personal experiences of movies based upon literary works. Which movies are best experienced only after you've first read the book? Has reading the book afterwards altered your opinion of a movie or indeed has your appreciation of a book changed after you watched the film adaptation? [more inside]

Haunted by a movie.
About ten years ago I was in France and I saw a chilling suspense movie on late-night TV. I'm not sure that it was French - maybe Dutch or German, with subtitles? I remember little: the music-box/bells theme, the murderer's slow grace, and a scene where the detective fills a room with steam to recover a victim's traced final message. A little more (and a spoiler) inside. [more inside]

When I play movie files in Firefox --qt, Windows Media, whatever--it will often play for a minute or so just fine, and then suddenly the screen goes green, thought the audio will still continue to play. I have to reboot to solve it but it always crops up again eventually. Anyone know why this is and what I can do about it?

I'm looking for a movie title. It is subtitled and set in Italy post WWII. The premise is about a young pre-pubescent boy (he narrates the movie) and the trials he faces with living in a small, over-crowded apt. He is becoming more and more of a man throughout the movie. He can't escape relatives crowding the apt to facilitate this change/behavior. The opening scene is an explanation of the bizarre way he was conceived. Something about a tomato cart, his mother falling into it, and her not wearing underwear that day? The young man's name starts with an L. His name is the title of the movie. There is a scene where his mother has asked him to pick up liver from the butcher. Before delivering it to her for dinner preparations, he slices into it with a knife and uses it to mimic a woman's vagina.
I hope this is enough information. Thanks.

Ive talked to some friends about it and some of them seem to remember it to - its all a little vague though, sorry bout that. This whole thing is spoiler-ridden, for obvious reasons, so if you start to read it and
a) havent seen the movie before and
b) would kind of like to
i'd suggest you stop when you think it starts to get good, because i've put down what i THINK the ending is. [more inside]
