Moving just up the road in Arlington (Northern VA) but have quite a bit of stuff that I don't trust me and my friends to not mess up. So what do I look for in a professional moving company?

I lived in LA several years ago and still have a storage locker there filled with my old stuff. Most of it is in moving boxes, but there's also a table in bubble-wrap. I want to move it all to a storage locker in Brooklyn, New York.
(1) I want to do this the cheapest way possible. I don't care how long it takes to get from Point A to Point B.
(2) I checked out the UPS and Fedex Freight sites but they're *extremely* confusing.
(3) I am only going to be in LA for THREE DAYS to arrange this so I need some method that can be concluded quickly.
(4) I am leaving for LA TONIGHT!
My thanks in advance to all you MeFiers for this very-last-minute question. :)

Our mover, licensed and bonded, turned out to be a criminal. He stole some of our things but even worse is that he's listed in the sexual offender directory. We're already warning others in our reviews but could/should we be more explicit?

Movers in Philadelphia for a move next week may have crapped out at the last minute. Does anyone have any suggestions for moving companies for a 1-bedroom-size within-city move who might be able to strike a last-minute appointment in case this is true?

I have four large, heavy items (furniture or similar) that I'd like to move from Philadelphia to Chicago, but I'm wondering if it's just cheaper sell them on craigslist and re-buy?

Can a moving company, after scheduling a pickup date and taking a deposit, legally back out a week before the pickup date? And if so, can anyone recommend any good moving companies for taking a small load (1.5BR, leaving most of the furniture) from Watertown, NY to Tampa, FL?

Can you suggest a mover for a (very) small amount of stuff? I have to move to a new apartment in the next 2 weeks, but I have very little stuff : one bedroom's worth of furniture, a sofa, and a folding table with some chairs. I only have 2 boxes of books. I called some moving companies, but the smallest load they will take is still way more than I have. I live in the Maryland suburbs of DC. Thanks.

Who are the best movers in Chicago? There's a slight difference in my question because money is no object, I want a company that will handle a few pieces of delicate furniture as if it were made of gold. The destination is about 35 minutes away from the city.

Help me send my extra-stressed far-off girlfriend some extra-nice movers on short notice. (This coming Tuesday! Ack!) 1 bedroom apartment w/furniture, fourth floor walkup, Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Everything's packed, the truck's already rented, and she has friends to help her unload at the other end, but she needs help loading.

I'm moving from a 2bdr (had a roommate) to a studio in the same apartment building on the south side of Chicago. I'll be moving, oh, maybe 15 floors down. The building has a freight elevator. Since I don't even need a truck, should I hire people? My desk almost doesn't fit in the door, my then-boyfriend had to tilt it in strange and crazy ways that I don't think I can do by myself. I have a loveseat, bed,
giant expedit bookshelf, and a desk - everything else I could handle myself I guess.

What's the most reputable moving company around for cross-country moves? I'm moving from Las Vegas to Manhattan, and have about 1BR worth of stuff, mostly books and a nice bed. High BBB ratings and being New York City-based are pluses. Which two guys and a truck can I trust??

Movers flat rate, or per hour?
I asked for a quote on citimove.com All the flat rates are get are ridiculously high.
I also got some quotes of movers that charge per hour.
If those same rates were applied, it seems that the flat rate movers would spend 10 hours moving the stuff in my 1 bedroom, which will be already packed, for a distance of ten miles.
That is impossible!?!?!
Is there a catch, hidden charges, or something? Because the per hour movers seem much cheaper than the flat raters. I don't want to get burned.

My movers finally arrived in Boston (Somerville) with my furniture and various items. Yay! But neither my sofa (my beloved red microfiber sofa, the whole reason I hired movers!) and my bed frame won't fit up the stairwell. Short of leaving them on the street is there anything I can do with them?
